Syracuse - Maryland - Michigan

Wasn't implying your post didn't make sense but rather, EO's career path decision(s) make no sense.

You mentioned that he secured a HC gig without coordinator experience previously...how did that turn out?

I'm just saying that he obviously could have used more complex OJT (i.e. DC) than being a position coach. Football is actually a pretty complicated game with many moving parts. If any coach's ultimate career goal is to become a HC, why not do yourself a favor and learn as a coordinator?

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many position coaches, without any coordinator experience, have become successful HC's?
Urban meyer?

People want Daoust to be our DC. Has he ever done it? Or recruited as well as Orgeron?

No he probably can't recruit as well as Orgeron, but he also isn't shady as hell as him either. Daoust has been integral in landing a few of these young studs in our D, and he will only get better over time as his connections develop.

We already have the players in place for Daoust's D, who is a protégé of Shafer. I think he would be a perfect fit.

I think you're right. It looks like he went from a former QB and WR position coach to the HC at Bowling Green.

Edit: It looks like Dabo Sweeney is another HC without coordinator experience. He did, however, have the title of Asst HC/WR coach before his promotion.

Put me in the camp that doesn't want a HC who has never served as an OC or DC.

That's why I don't want him as our HC.

But if you're a guy who can recruit good enough players the. You can probably run a good enough D.

I think the underlying implication is that EO recognizes his own talents and limitations. Assume he sees himself as a leader - motivator - teacher - recruiter but recognizes he is not an X and O guy and as a HC can hire OC / DC for that role.

Just because he's never been a DC before doesn't mean this couldn't be his first shot at it.

If he wanted to stay a DL coach then he'd just stay in the south. Any SEC team would take him in a heartbeat for that role.

By we could offer him his first DC role which he might feel he needs on his way back to being a HC again.

I don't see it happening either, but that's our only play.

Ed O comes as HC or he doesn't come

Then we have no play.

I'd be 1000% shocked if we hire another defensive guy.

Our problem is defense.

We can't get off the field.

You may be right but Orgeron brings such big time experience and such recruiting chops that I wouldn't care what side of the ball he's on

The defense has been a problem for 1 year; young and under manned. Offense has been a problem for years plural.

Lester's system hasn't been in place for years. McDonald is long gone.

The offense was promising this year - we had a solid number of explosive plays this season - we had a break-out QB performance by a frosh - something for which Lester deserves a lot of credit - we also had a great performance by a frosh RB - and we scored some points.

It was actually a lot of fun to watch the offense this year - when Dungey was playing and was being protected.

The fundamental problem this year was the defense - we could not get off the field. Had the defense made a single stop we beat UVA. And the same holds true for Pitt.

Much of the same is true for USF.

Frankly I would have no problem keeping Lester and his offensive system - I like it. And I would have no problem hiring a guy like Ed Orgeron as HC - a guy who knows how to recruit and develop a DL - something we need very badly if we're to compete.
