Forgive the post if this exists somewhere in the 'archives' here. Does anyone have a list of SU players who are playing overseas along with any salary information. I'm wondering why we have so many guys in the d-league where max pay is 30k pre-tax when you can seemingly go to Europe be one of the best, have a heck of a lot of fun, and make investment banker level money. I get playing in the d-league for a year or two - but at some point you are just forgoing large amounts of money with no clear upside and could presumably get back to the NBA if you wanted if you perform very well overseas. In terms of salary in Europe I've seen only a range (which is pretty wide) and a top 10 (which after perks plus exchange rates look very attractive). Does anyone have any thoughts or information on this? Just thinking of a guy like Southerland who you want to just go and kick a** somewhere and do really well. thanks.

Just the obvious ones off the top off my head in Jonny, Devo and Ricky Jackson who's back in the states now.

But I completely agree that if after a year or two and there are $$$ to be made, that they would be better off abroad.

I believe the new CBA has a lot to do with prayers choosing the d-league over Europe. I believe over the next few years players will be going for the d-league to the NBA in greater numbers as the luxury tax penalties increase.

It's really tough to get wage info for foreign leagues. Even in large football (soccer leagues) you can only speculate on the highest paid players unless you follow a team exclusively and have an idea what your club pays vs what players ask for in wages when they transfer. I have a fairly good grasp on current and former Liverpool player wages but aside form that you can only find info on top 10 or 20 paid players online.

Valid point though being fairly certain these D league guys could make more overseas. Problem is, if they make too much in areas like France, they'll pay it all away in taxes. They're having issues with keeping players in country because of this right now.

Not sure how true it is but one of the articles I saw indicated that for basketball the players get packages that include living expenses, cars, and the team pays your tax for you. so lets say you are making 85k euro. Benefits might include housing worth 40k, a car worth 10k, and meal stipend worth say 10k. so total value is 145k eur. Exchange rate is around 1.3 so your at $188,000. Then the tax benefit (assume tax in europe is higher than the US which in general it is you would owe $0 in US taxes on that $188,000) is worth another $42k in federal tax savings... so the equivalent salary is around $230,000 if you were in the US - so 8 years worth of max d-league pay.

you have to be very careful, and really do your homework if choosing to go over seas to play. I use Eurobasket.com some of the information is a little off but you can use your knowledge and a little google work to verify what you need on a specific player.

The Childress deal seems somewhat unique in that he turned down big money in the NBA to go to Greece. Reading Pete Thamel's NYT article he was initially very excited to go, and was enjoying his time there. Then it sounds like he got worn down by the sort of lower standard of life than what you would get in the nba - sharing rooms on trips, coaches don't fawn over you etc. I guess he did experience delays in getting paid as well. But the warning I saw from him was aimed at players already in the NBA who talked about going to Europe during the lockout (or whatever it was called).

Still if you are a more marginal talent level guy who may never break out of the d-league - I wonder if Europe isn't a really good deal -again would have to figure out what the salaries are but just generally sounds like it's much more than d-league pay for the good teams/leagues. The stuff about Rautins is definitely a negative piece of anecdotal evidence against Europe, not sure if that is a pervasive problem??

Adding on to the comments already made...
- People throw around 'he'll go play in Europe' as a generic throw away phrase. The reality is that it is very hard for an american to play in a lot of the top european leagues. They either have explicit or implicit limits on the # of american players they can have on a roster. It's rare to see more than 3 americans on any one team.
- Not all european gigs are created equal...I laugh when I hear "Rak can go make a ton of money in Europe". Ummm...no. He may be able to make a low-mid level league, but he isn't going to make a premier team. Not a chance. Take Panathinaikos, one of the premier teams. I pulled up a recent roster and they have three Americans - Marcus Banks (ex 1st round pick college AA), James Gist (16 pts, 8 rbs, and 2.3 blocks as a sr at maryland), and Jason Kapono. That is pretty typical of the really good teams. Could Andy make a team like tha? Yeah maybe. But you have to be real good.
- Agree with the other comments about $$$. Its hard to gauge how much they actually get\keep. Lots of perks, but high taxes and I've heard the ability for the team to walk away pretty easily

This contractual risk stuff - eg not getting paid, employer having the power to dump you easily - all seems totally out of synch with the general impression I get of EU labor laws which seem to favor the employee to the point of forcing companies into bankruptcy. I wonder if it's just a few examples of this or if it's generally true... The 3 Americans or less rule does sound like what I'd expect in terms of labor force protectionism.
