Friendly reminder that tickets to the public for UVA bball games went on sale this morning...I just purchased some uppers in one of the corner sections.

If you're interested in going to the game and can't get seats through Syracuse, I'd encourage you to buy now...

Game is March 1st in Charlottesville.

I'll be there as well. Should be a great game. And for people not familiar with UVa, they play at the new John Paul Jones Arena, which is a great small arena to watch a game, and Charlottesville is a really fun town. Let me know if anyone needs suggestions for bars, restaurants, hotels, etc. This is a Saturday game at 4 pm, which works out perfectly. I've got a bunch of friends coming into town for it. Should be fun! I'm predicting a Syracuse win in OT!

Just got tickets for myself and my daughter. Just a little over three hour drive from me. My daughter is a high school junior and we will take a college tour before the game. Went to the Nc State game two years ago. Hope we get a similar turn out, although the arena is much smaller.

i have two tickets located in the "darkest depths of mordor" section.

For anyone going to Charlottesville for the first time, give yourself time to visit Monticello (Jefferson's home). He was truly one of the most fascinating people in American history (statesman, lawyer, architect, farmer, wine-maker, etc).

Yep, Monticello is a must. It also might be worth walking around campus/grounds and checking out the Rotunda, which Jefferson had built. It's a free, self-guided tour. It's no substitute for Monticello. But if you don't have at least 3 or 4 hours to give for the full Monticello tour, which is about 5-10 miles from UVa, the Rotunda might be a quicker more convenient option. It's located btwn the JPJ basketball arena and the UVa college bars.

Here's a few more suggestions. Also, if you have time, there's great hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is part of the Appalachian trail and contains Shenandoah Nat'l Park, connecting with the Smokies, and the scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway which starts outside DC and goes down to the Carolinas. And there's tons of wineries and several good breweries in the area to check out. Blue Mountain Brewery is the best, IMO, which is by the Blue Ridge. And Jefferson Vineyards is right by Monticello. Supposedly it's made from some of the same vines/grape seeds that Jefferson had shipped over from France to start his own vineyard.

For hitting the bars at night, there's 2 main spots you can go to. There's the "corner", which is right next to the university and about a ten minute walk from the JPJ arena. It's more an undergrad college town bar scene. There's also the downtown mall, which is a pedestrian mall lined with outdoor bars and restaurants and music venues and shopping, and is more a young professional type vibe.

I love Charlottesville. I've had friends who have retired there... especially people from DC. The clean brick architecture is so beautiful. When I was looking for a house in CT 25 years ago, I kept telling realtors I wanted a Charlottesville-type brick house. Unfortunately, it did not work: 1) They didn't know what I was talking about; 2) There are no such houses here.

Anybody interested in driving down to Raleigh on Saturday morning from Richmond? I'll have a rental car...can meet you at a WalMart on the east or south side of Richmond close to the freeway. I plan to return after the game. We can split the gas. Send me a PM. I plan to get there early to tailgate.

Mark - did you put this here purposely due to the participation by Virginia peeps here? Just wondering because it confused me at first since it's in the basketball forum.

Just want to make sure you get the response/interest you're looking for. I've been known to put posts in totally wrong threads.

Yeah...I figured anyone reading this thread might be driving to NCSt for the FB game this weekend.

Just picked up tickets. Nosebleed, but I'll be there. Hopefully my daughter doesn't have a dance competition that day...

Charlottesville is awesome. We were just there last month, visited Monticello too. There is a really nice bed and breakfast outside of town called Prospect Hill that we like.

If you have time hit the Afton wineries. Gorgeous area of the country, and Veritas is a stand out. King's Family in Crozet is also great. For beer drinkers, there's the Brew Ridge tour. Devil's Backbone is one of the best small breweries in the country. There's also Wild Wolf Brewey, and a great cider place (Bold Rock).

If you want the whole Monticello experience, check out the Michie Tavern which is quite close to Monticello. It's kind of a tourist trap, but it's fun if you've never been. The food isn't all that bad either. Jefferson Vineyards is at the base of Monticello.Great wine, and the vineyard was started from the vines that Jefferson used at Monticello.

If you like an eating experience try Mas Tapas in C-Ville. Awesome stuff. The mall is a great place to people watch, and Boylan Heights on the corner is a great place to get a great burger and beer. I'll post more if I think of it.

I have to say that I have yet to try anything that from Devil's Backbone that I really like. I'm a big fan of craft breweries and small businesses, so I buy their stuff from time to time but none of their offerings stack up with any of my favorites. I definitely want to try Wild Wolf. I've had the veritas from Afton and it is great, and I've been to Jefferson Vineyards too and like several of their offerings.

Thanks for the tip on Mas Tapas, we'll check that out.

I'm right there with you on Devil's Backbone. The property itself is awesome, right at the base of Wintergreen in the Blue Ridge mountains, but I think their beer is just okay. As I noted above, Blue Mountain is the one brewery that really stands out. They are great, particularly their Evil 8 Belgian style dubbel, Mandolin which is a Belgian style tripel, the Dark Hollow bourbon barrel, and they are the first brewery I've ever found where I like their seasonal pumpkin ale. Probably because the pumpkin is very subtle, and it's over 10% abv! Actually all of those beers are high octane, all close to or at 10% abv. They rock! but that being said, Devil's Backbone is still worth going to since the property is great, the food is solid, and it's just down the road from Blue Mountain.

And I should add that Starr Hill Brewery is in Crozet, which is kind of on the way from Cville to Blue Mountain and Devil's Backbone and Wild Wolf.

There's also several new breweries right in town (Champion, Three Notched), but I think they still need some work. South Street Brewery is the oldest one in town and is pretty good. Satan's Pony is a solid beer!

Mas is definitely a good spot for food, but the problem for me is I end up spending way too much money in there since it's tapas and each little plate is a little pricey and not too filling, so I end up order a bunch. Very good though. We also have an tapas style small plate restaurant for Asian food (a real ecletic mix of Japanese, Chinese, Indian, etc.) that's really good, called Bang. It's located right next to South Street Brewery off the downtown mall.
