Syverud retiring in June 2026 / next University of Michigan President

Wow very apt insight here
This was what his wife told me. They have kids that live there. I think this was not a lock when I saw her in September. They were moving to Ann Arbor regardless of the job. It is where they plan to retire. They are renovating the home they own there. I assume the Chancellor lives in a campus owned home, so this may have been an opportunity that came about since September.

This is an incredibly rude, and unnecessary comment. His plans could have changed. They were moving there for retirement. Maybe it was an opportunity he couldn't turn down. Maybe he plans to do it for just a short number of years. He may have felt an affinity for UMich as he has a couple of degrees from there.

It is unfortunate how nasty this board has become.

Are people mad about it? I think we are just confused because it seem to go against what we heard. Doesn’t seem like anyone cares much

Edit: sorry you mean the users comment, it was rude

With all due respect to the older people on this board, this country has a problem with people not retiring and letting younger generations take over these upper level positions, both in government and the business world. It stagnates things, in my opinion.

Yea that’s def uncalled for. Things change all the time. I bet he was approached as Michigan has been searching for someone. Probably an opportunity that he can’t turn down especially since he was moving back there either way.

It would be nice to find a 30 year old with 30+ years of experience.

I know. I believed you and I spoke to him myself and know you were right. My comment was to say that you knew what you were talking about.

I retired this past spring at 57. 4 months in I get a call from my former boss asking if I’d consider “helping out” on a part time basis at more then double my previous salary. I guess my younger replacement was a disaster.

Sometimes it’s not us holding things up. If you get offered a sweet deal because they value experience over youth, you have to take it.

Do you guys believe a new chancellor could benefit our NIL & athletics.

If we get someone who prioritizes athletics?
Need someone to prioritize academics. School has fallen like a knife.

Sports will do what sports do. Not sure Kent has prevented anything. You can’t imagine or dream up a booster.

Seems to me a bit of a stop gap while UM gets its house in order. Gives them a place to stay while they finalize their home. Win/win and a marriage of convenience. Just a guess.

100 percent. There are also a lot of people who hang on for too long because they’re worried about being bored or not having a purpose. Also, I’m referring to people in their 70s and 80s.
