Syverud retiring in June 2026 / next University of Michigan President

As far as I know, Kent hurt our NIL & athletics. No idea if that’s true or not, but if it is, hopefully a new chancellor can help the program out
Reality is a bit different. Being a chancellor means balancing academics and athletics, especially at a school like Syracuse where we don't have the same amount of resources for athletics from private donors. Kent was more supportive of athletics than people think, but it's an area where if you're a sports fan, you always want more.

I think without the Weitsman drama, people would have looked at him differently.

I only went to SU because of Newhouse so I get it but to say he’s an embarrassment is a bit much

Our issue is existential more than structural. Can we get kids to spend 90k per to go to CNY vs Athens Georgia or somewhere w better sorority rush videos

The instagramization of the SEC has hurt us. Like I said upstream the athletics can only help w our image but we need great coaches to accomplish that

My kids didn’t even consider SU as an option and both my wife and I are alum. Neither wants communications and the other depts are subpar to where they are going,
Just seeing this because of the news today. Yeah, my kid is a freshman in Athens. I wouldn’t chalk it up to the marketing (instagram) angle of it. It’s essentially free with Hope and Zell scholarships for residents AND higher ranked academically…and surrounding state schools try to combat that with very aggressive offers to out of state high quality kids. The value prop of Syracuse is just massively diminished, sadly. I have another kid who will be looking in a couple years and Georgia Tech and uga are top unless there’s scholarships in play from TOP privates like Duke or vandy. It’s a different world (I was at Cuse mid 90s).

Do you guys believe a new chancellor could benefit our NIL & athletics.

If we get someone who prioritizes athletics?
Yes the new chancellor is going to help a lot. The guy is a different type of thinker and innovator so I’m excited for him…
But I don’t like what I’m hearing about a Wildhack replacement when that time comes. If they go with who they are discussing, it will be possibly the worst move they could make. I’ll leave it at that

The NESCAC schools are still doing exceptionally well. Not sure it’s all the north east issue. I’m sure Cornell has a healthy application base

Truly confused by Syracuse and the rankings and perception nationally as a top school. UMass is ranked higher now. Hope new chancellor games it like some schools have

Heather Lyke? You don't have to answer, but my guess based on what you posted.

I don't think you are stating how bad that move would be. It is way past the worst move they could make. That is how bad it is. And if that is the chancellor's move, I would take a pass on what you just said about him.

They are discussing next AD pre new chancellor

Does chancellor make this pick or is it Smokey BOT room hire?

I suspect your cryptic comment would make it some ex athlete hire

I could be totally off base, but for NY residents, Binghamton (my alma mater for undergrad) has always been a solid school, and their image/rankings seem to be improving as well. Even called a “Public Ivy” about a year and half ago by Forbes.

For a lot of programs academically, I would guess Binghamton for the price tag is appealing. I did miss the sports experience that comes with having a good football and basketball team, but in hindsight, am very happy with the decision I made to go the more budget friendly route.

Do they have an idea on who the new chancellor will be? Also, thanks for the info. Hopefully wildhack stays.

Jeez. I wonder who it could be. From what you and bulldog are saying it sounds like they’re considering boeheim or weitsman lol

This. You can’t say “what a great chancellor person would be for athletics” and then say his first hire as AD would be a “disaster.”

He passed.
Do you have any idea when the new chancellor be announced?

From what bulldog is saying he sounds like an ideal pickup for us.

But if he goes with who you’re saying at AD then…

Someone also mentioned they were thinking about going with this mystery ad before the new chancellor.

so hopefully the new chancellor shuts it down.

It’s purely coincidental, but it’s hard to overcome that our most underwhelming decade of College Basketball despite a few Cinderella runs as a double digit seed in a long time happened under his watch then you see he is a Georgetown grad.

On another note. syverud’s support of the super league supported by private equity is an interesting back story here.
Ya know I hadn’t even thought about that. He was one of few willing to advocate publicly though apparently has a lot more support privately. Him being in the big ten now would be a good thing. They just need get rid of their Commissioner now.

Well this person is already being discussed and new chancellor isn’t in yet. So the timing will be interesting. The new chancellor does care a lot for athletics. And may be thinking this could be a good hire possibly ? But it would be catastrophic and dasher is 100 pct right about how bad it truly would be
