Syverud retiring in June 2026 / next University of Michigan President

Just all depends on interactions right? And stuff you hear. I have all types of friends at the university so you hear a bunch, I’ve had some interactions with him, and again it’s all personal perspective. I also think he did some stuff behind the scenes that weren’t very forthcoming in my mind. But again, it’s all in the eye of the beholder and depends on who you ask
My interactions with him were limited, However perception from those closer was that he was very much wed to expanding research initiatives with resultant increase in academic prestige and scope. There is still definitely a lot left on the table. Athletic initiatives while not primary strengthened to a degree while considering the entire student experience as well as student athlete empowerment initiatives which I truly appreciate. I also appreciate your insight always. For sure and thank you. No matter what I believe research initiatives must grow to an even further degree while also expanding upon the entire student experience which certainly involves high major athletics. I believe that is a viable accessory admission mechanism with retention principles. Thank you and we are certainly not done

Definitely. There are always exceptions. But I generally like people who were wanted at their last jobs for positions as important as this.
Same. We also have unique challenges at Syracuse and I don’t think she is right person to navigate what’s in front of us.

John is still here and I hope he doesn’t leave anytime soon. Folks who complain about JW are in for a rude awakening if she’s the replacement IMHO.

They are in for a rude awaking for a lot of the people who could replace him.

I’m personally of the belief we are only at the beginning of seeing the fruits of the work Wildhack has led. The first several years was getting the facilities up to par and then NIL/Revenue Sharing in place. Now the primary focus should be winning. I guess she did fire Kevin Stallings, but I mean that wasn’t really a bold move. If they go with an internal hire, I personally feel Torrey Ball is a better option.

100 percent. There are also a lot of people who hang on for too long because they’re worried about being bored or not having a purpose. Also, I’m referring to people in their 70s and 80s.
You know what would help boost the retirement rate? lowering the age to qualify for Medicare. Anyway, just catching up on this thread and agree with the sentiments about Ken and hoping we get a twofer with ADJW hitting the pavement. I'm still salty about what happened with the women's bball program, how did he not know what was going on?

I for one, am glad he is leaving. First, I went to a lot of time and effort to try and broker a peace between Adam W and Kent and the school. I contacted Kent twice by email. He wasn't courteous enough to respond. Nothing. Thank you for your interest. We will consider it. Nothing. I am an alum after all. They know my phone number and address when they are asking for money.
I remember you saying this couple years ago.

Way before I joined

I like John a lot. I think he took a chance with Fran and it was a home run hire. I just didn’t necessarily agree with picking red but I get all the politics behind it.

New chancellor. Keep Wildhack

Giant dork is understatement. JW is easy to talk to. I didn’t find Kent to be that in any way

My kid goes to SU and her various groups have been highly engaged with by this chancellor. I find it odd that a guy who doesn’t support sports helped preside over the biggest expansion of infrastructure since the dome was built. He let John be John, which helps beyond more people want to know. Also what Jake said about private equity.

Reality is a bit different. Being a chancellor means balancing academics and athletics, especially at a school like Syracuse where we don't have the same amount of resources for athletics from private donors. Kent was more supportive of athletics than people think, but it's an area where if you're a sports fan, you always want more.

I think without the Weitsman drama, people would have looked at him differently.

Exactly. I don’t know where people get the idea that he hated athletics. A few unformed people say something and then others run with it. Besides being at games, which isn’t a huge deal, he was selected to be in that national committee to reimagined college athletics. Then he was asked to be the chairman of that committee. You don’t become a chairman of something like that by hating athletics. He’s now going to the University of Michigan. The 20th ranked academic school in the country with a huge athletic reputation. Michigan didn’t get there by hiring losers. They’ve got issues in their athletic department, which I suspect Kent will be asked to help clean up. It’s a perfect spot for him in his final years since it’s where he wants to be located personally.

I had no problem with him, Syracuse University is a really hard school to manage in today’s environment. It’s only going to get harder.

I think the negative perception of him is mostly related to the Weitsman situation.

and he may not have been wrong about that situation. Some may want to criticize him for allowing JB to stay on for so long.

He gets a B. There were good things and bad things. Good things that involve cleaning up problems that you don’t really get the kudos for. The last few years, Syracuse has shifted to being more proactive in the way it handles affairs the last two years, his perception when he leaves may overall still be negative, but imo it was worse even a few years ago. We were very reactive for most of his tenure in about the first 8 years. Perhaps that is because his hands were full with other infrastructure projects that needed to be done. Ultimately, I just don’t think he was a culture fit at Syracuse to say he was an A chancellor, he could be at Michigan. He is leaving at the right time. The next chancellor I hope is much more of a ‘people’ person because I think it’s what Syracuse needs in its leader at a university that is very unique in Syracuse.

I completely agree with your statement contrary to the previous gentleman for sure. Honestly that gentleman's posts have completely soured upon me, He comes off as a disgruntled, archaic mean spirited person with an agenda. We definitely did fall, however we have been working our way back. Current chancellor should have never caved to the state concerning medical school initiative with a veteran bend. also bring back the nursing school while continuing and expanding other research based curriculums and programs of study. Critical
The academics have fallen. Why is this remotely controversial?

The school had to rebid students in May because they under enrolled due to students going elsewhere

It’s an issue. I went to SU ranked 44. I love that we discount it because it’s not beneficial.

Didn't she get canned at Pitt and a lot of those folks were happy she was gone?

Enrollment cliff in the NE is a real problem. That and the cost of SU, are really challenges
