Syverud retiring in June 2026 / next University of Michigan President

Enrollment cliff in the NE is a real problem. That and the cost of SU, are really challenges
Yes, and the private schools that have already closed took on too much debt, and then the shortfall of students couldn't balance the debt out.

Schools are spending a ton of money to mortgage their future and the shortage of students is the real deal. More schools will most likely have to close over the next five or ten years. And not insinuating Syracuse is one of them.

I think the negative perception of him is mostly related to the Weitsman situation.

i'm not so sure. plenty of people were dragging him before weitsman. i know some are saying things based on personal experience and ive had some interactions with him (including a billy joel concert in the dome lol) and i always found him to be very pleasant and cordial. he is introverted and quiet it seems. but that doesnt make him dumb or a dork.

Yes the new chancellor is going to help a lot. The guy is a different type of thinker and innovator so I’m excited for him…
But I don’t like what I’m hearing about a Wildhack replacement when that time comes. If they go with who they are discussing, it will be possibly the worst move they could make. I’ll leave it at that
I didn’t realize wildhack was not long for this world

JB?

We had a thread on here when she was hired. Read it and weep.

How do we mobilize to influence this? :)

Maybe things have changed since then with her, who knows. But, as a complete outsider :), I'd like to see the WDM for what they are requiring, and can be measured, even if imprecisely.

Exactly. I don’t know where people get the idea that he hated athletics. A few unformed people say something and then others run with it. Besides being at games, which isn’t a huge deal, he was selected to be in that national committee to reimagined college athletics. Then he was asked to be the chairman of that committee. You don’t become a chairman of something like that by hating athletics. He’s now going to the University of Michigan. The 20th ranked academic school in the country with a huge athletic reputation. Michigan didn’t get there by hiring losers. They’ve got issues in their athletic department, which I suspect Kent will be asked to help clean up. It’s a perfect spot for him in his final years since it’s where he wants to be located personally.
The board in the collective sense needs to get better at filtering out those who are 95% certain that X is true based on (being kind here) 5% factual knowledge.

As you mentioned, for those who are certain Syverud "hates athletics" trying Googling his role in the "College Student Football League."

100 percent. There are also a lot of people who hang on for too long because they’re worried about being bored or not having a purpose. Also, I’m referring to people in their 70s and 80s.
That hasn't been true for public companies for at least 30 years, and the level of discrimination in hiring applicants over 60 is seriously high.

So, I didn't expect to come to this thread and see that there are behind the scenes discussions about our next AD. Has JW indicated he's leaving soon? Are people just making assumptions based on his age and how long he has been here?

Syracuse better start “gaming” the rankings system because kids absolutely use them as a way to determine not only where to go but what they are willing to pay. The price/value equation is important to kids and their parents. If a school is ranked low but its costs are high, whether true in actuality or not, the determination is made that the school is not worth the price.

You can see this in schools like Northeastern, where 40 years ago they didn’t even register on the radar, but now they manipulate applications to make it appear that it’s a highly selective school. The rankings became reality and now kids are banging down the doors to get in there. SU not so much.

At one point, Syracuse was ranked on par with USC and BU. Now those schools have skyrocketed in rankings, popularity, and selectivity. Meanwhile, SU has fallen significantly. I don’t know what they did to create that gap, but SU better do some gaming soon.

I’m not saying the rankings should dictate everything SU does or that the education a student receives has necessarily deteriorated, but perception is reality in higher education. And, right now, especially after that NYT admission fiasco article last year, SU is in a tough spot. The university needs to reup its prestige.

I 100% agree and there are going to be some well known colleges (even in NY) that don't make it to 2040.

Not to make this off topic board, but the next few years I imagine will be incredibly difficult for a lot of college admins who seem to be playing by the old rules and decorum.

It's going to take some brave and forward thinking administrative leaders to get some schools to 2030, let alone 2040
