Syverud retiring in June 2026 / next University of Michigan President

Exactly. I don’t know where people get the idea that he hated athletics. A few unformed people say something and then others run with it. Besides being at games, which isn’t a huge deal, he was selected to be in that national committee to reimagined college athletics. Then he was asked to be the chairman of that committee. You don’t become a chairman of something like that by hating athletics. He’s now going to the University of Michigan. The 20th ranked academic school in the country with a huge athletic reputation. Michigan didn’t get there by hiring losers. They’ve got issues in their athletic department, which I suspect Kent will be asked to help clean up. It’s a perfect spot for him in his final years since it’s where he wants to be located personally.
Really great post for sure, looking back upon his time I am honestly tremendously grateful for him in so many ways. That is a tough ship to navigate. Especially from a private sector/private school standpoint. I did not know how much of a mess he inherited, especially on the academic side. We still have a ways to go and I trust the next chance will navigate these waters even better primarily due to the fact of what this current chancellor did. We must continue to expand our research endeavors and the state of New York must realize exactly what this institution means to the region as well as the state as a whole. I feel we need to be treated as such with appropriate supports. I could be mistaken but is the University of Pittsburgh a part private/state institution?

No question su should be full suny school. There is a unknown reason(s) why Kent was unsuccesfull in hard science research and a sub sub par law school. The board of trustees must be have a ton of conflicts.
This is a wakeup call to break out of mediocrity to innovation, commit to hard science research facilities Ai and get the access to Suny support.

Political leadership in NYS is not remotely up to the task of absorbing SU into SUNY in a way that would be a win-win for both sides. That would take a Rockefeller or Cuomo (pre-scandal) literally at the height of their powers. Right now any attempt would be attacked by about 10 sets of bureaucracies at least.

Academics haven’t fallen the way you think they have. They aren’t gaming towards ranking.
Seriously. What does “falling academics” even mean? Does SU tell professors to only teach students 80% of their expertise instead of 100%?

SU has never been a wildly difficult school to get into. But it produces a huge amount of well educated and highly qualified graduates across a vast array of fields.

U.S. News rankings are garbage and suck balls.

As a graduate of SU I want absolutely zero part of it becoming a state school. The suggestion is preposterous.

For those who are arguing for Syracuse to become a SUNY school, some history based on my long term memory (so I hope it's still good). I had to look it up that Buffalo was purchased by SUNY and became part of the SUNY system in 1962. I was in my mid-teens then and in high school in Syracuse. My recollection is that SUNY at the time it was considering UB was also considered SU and it was going to be one of the two. Ultimately they chose UB. I don't recall why other than possibly the then SU administration (Chancellor Tolley was chancellor then) may have opposed it. One additional tidbit from my research on UB is that UB is a member of the Association of American Universities (since 1989). SU used to be also, admitted in 1966 but resigned before they were booted out around 2010, possibily because SUNY purchased the SU Medical School (now Upstate) which diminished the amount of Federal research dollars that SU received. Being a member of the AAU historically has been a prequisite to be asked to join the Big Ten. Endnote -- I'm going to venture a wild guess that SU athletics would never have been as successful had it been part of SUNY.
