very good question. I have no idea. In the case of SU selling it's Medical School I assume the money from SUNY went to SU. In Buffalo's case I guess they had to buy the land, but I think SUNY built a new campus. Did they put funds in their endowment? Did they purchase the IP? Did the faculty get anything? This would be a good research project when someone has time. At present I don't though would love to look into this.

If a school is ranked low but its costs are high, whether true in actuality or not, the determination is made that the school is not worth the price.

You can see this in schools like Northeastern, where 40 years ago they didn’t even register on the radar, but now they manipulate applications to make it appear that it’s a highly selective school. The rankings became reality and now kids are banging down the doors to get in there. SU not so much.

At one point, Syracuse was ranked on par with USC and BU. Now those schools have skyrocketed in rankings, popularity, and selectivity. Meanwhile, SU has fallen significantly. I don’t know what they did to create that gap, but SU better do some gaming soon.

I’m not saying the rankings should dictate everything SU does or that the education a student receives has necessarily deteriorated, but perception is reality in higher education. And, right now, especially after that NYT admission fiasco article last year, SU is in a tough spot. The university needs to reup its prestige.

Shouldnt have sold the medical school. Hard to rise in the rankings when one of the major factors is research dollars and you don’t have a school that generates the most value on that end

I don't know the history. I don't know if they had a choice. NYS may have made an offer they couldn't refuse. Good research project for someone. I think I saw on the wiki page of the medical school it was in 1950; I thought it was later than that.

It’s ancient history for sure but it it the main driver of AAU membership and research grants

I think we were admitted to the AAU in 1966 so have to wonder what role the medical school history played in that. Having a medical school might be more important today then it was back then for AAU status. I recall some have suggested that we start a new medical school now. I think there is some discussion of that somewhere on these boards.

AAU changed its membership criteria from total research dollars to primarily medical research dollars. Nebraska got booted and Syracuse withdrew before getting booted.

I think Geneseo, Binghamton, and Stoney Brook each have some programs superior to similar SU programs.

Proud BU alum. No chance I was getting in if I didn’t play golf when I went in ‘04.

On the flip side, no chance I was going to go anywhere else but SU if they had a team. Syracuse kid, obsessed with SU. How do you own 2 courses (that were my home course for my entire junior golf career and my high school teams course) and not even entertain a team? Yeah I know title 9 but that still bugs me to this day even though I loved every minute at BU

Maybe Melo, Lally or AW will support a Men's and Women's team and you can head it up.

SU had a golf team in the 60’s - JB played on it while in college and was the head coach after he graduated. I think they have a club golf team now. I don’t know when the college golf team disbanded though.

On a side note, my high school (Henninger) was built on a former golf course. Fortunately they left par 3 holes (9 holes?) which I more than once cut classes to go play a bit.
