In September I had an opportunity to do a presentation teaching at an Athletes in Action Summit breakout called "Ministry in the Current Athletic Culture" - It was observations & insights about how the Portal & NIL has changed in both my responsibilities working with athletes, but also athletic departments as a whole.
It was NOT a discussion on if NIL/Portal is "Good or Bad," but what impact is it having.
The first impact I listed is individuality is increased. "I" instead of "We," individual goals over team goals, etc. One byproduct of that is the loss of developing the character elements of perseverance/deep rootedness. It's kind of like instead of sticking it out through the storm of trials, athletes can just hit the portal & look for the perceived next best option (which isn't always the reality).
The second impact is instability, especially for teams. Instead of continuity & long term development, in a lot of ways coaches/teams have to spend time reteaching culture, norms & expectations while continuity, chemistry & unity are lost... team development is limited to a yearly cycle.
Of course these things impact in similar ways to my role in doing ministry with Athletes, but I had some coaches come & share as well... for them, it's exhausting, draining & frustrating (I had both a football coach & a track + field coach come & share)
