Talking Heads Say SU Can Never Land A Big Name Coach

I hear the talking heads on sports radio laugh at the callers every time they say SU should hire a big name coach to create a buzz in town about the football program. Well I hope they are watching ESPN2 tonight. Maybe they can explain to their listeners how the University of Cincinnati Bearcats were able to hire someone like Tommy Tuberville last season even though they are in the AAC but Syracuse fans should never expect someone of his caliber to come here. Tuberville's offense put up over 400 yards in offense on ECU in the first half and he has a 14-7 record in year # 2 with the Bearcats.

Tubs wasn't a big name, he was a reclamation project. And they were replacing a coach that got hired by Tennesee, it's not like he walked into a crap situation.

And Cinci has been doing very well for a long time.

And the reason he went there was:

He was hated at Texas Tech,

His wife is from the area,

And his buddy was the AD at Cinci.

They also were able to hire him because he has been sued by the government for falsifying documents and failure to file tax returns and he went after an assistant coach on the sideline during a game and made contact with him in an altercation. He isn't a high character guy who any "quality" program will want to hire at this point. Lot's of red flags around him, that's how you end up at Cincinnati to end your career

Cincinnati cares about its football program. Which is why they have better facilities, a better staff, more wins, and better incoming class even as an American Athletic member.

They may be on their way to having a better stadium, but it's crap and small currently.

Cincinnati is spending 80 million on a sick stadium upgrade.

80 million dollars of donations.

Dumb programs hire "big names".

Smart programs hire "good coaches".

Buzz fades quickly.

Winning sustains.

I agree with you but would love to see us refute this with a big name coach. We haven't had luck hiring a good coach (which i define as getting one top 25 vote since the advent of the cell phone).

I still think Jim Tressel would be the one reclamation project i'd be fine with investing in. I actually like that guy after watching that ESPN documentary on him. I have become numb to guys who are "problems" in the eyes of the NCAA. Don't really care anymore. If Boeheim is under constant investigation then why would we care about giving Jim a second chance.

Like in my neck of the woods at Kansas. Charlie Weis anybody?
Or how about they find a coach that cheated on his wife with a hot volleyball player and then got into a motorcycle accident with her on the back? It could happen.

I believe I mentioned Petrino for SU and got shouted down by the self righteous on this board. The only reason I'm not a fan of Tressel is that his brand of football is Boring. Not sure what kind of recruiter he would be, he's never really had to do it at the FBS level. At OSU you don't recruit, you select.

The only way for this scenario to be viable is if this theoretical coach were to have used undue influence to procure the employment of this paramour in the athletic department.

I would have disagreed with you too. I prefer they have a coach with character among other positive coaching traits.

I haven't given up on HCSS as a head coach. I don't think that he can HC in a vacuum, but with the right supporting cast, he can be very good.

He needs:
1. He is a great DC, so he doesn't need an X's and O's guy at the DC position. Instead, he needs a guy who A) can flat out sell and B) doesn't mind being micro managed.
2. He needs an OC who is a great X's and O's guy who is OK working in a very independent environment.
3. Based on the type of offense that the OC wants to install, he needs position coaches who can flat out develop the talent of key positions.

Anything less will result in failure, and anything more will be needlessly expensive.

They raised $40m with donations and suites. Think they are still working on the rest.

They are and they said they are confident they will raise the rest. Like o have said many times before, the school decides when enough has been raised to take on the risk of raising the rest. Even the Melo Center hasn't raised 100% yet but they still keep trying. If they end up a million short, then it's on the school budget.

The $80m is not from the school budget.
