Tampa 2 or not this D is putrid.

At what point is a DB supposed to look back for the ball?
How does a DB block a pass if they have no idea where the ball is?

I'm not trying to be a wiseass; I just don't understand how to defend against the pass.

I keyed in on Zaire tonight and I'm not really seeing it. Hoping we have a backer push him next year.

Very overrated. Our whole LB corps is overrated. Bennett, Thomas, Franklin. Those three guys were supposed to be really good players. Different system, so who knows how they'd perform in Shafer's style. But Thomas barely played last year as it was.

Defensive backfield gets a lot of grief and rightfully so, but the LB corps is not much better.

Remember all the plays this year where we've seen a LB make an all out beeline to the ball with bad intentions? Yeah, me neither.

One thing I noticed watching our game then others is that we are never jumping around fired up on defense. Even early in game when we were forcing punts the players never seemed fired up. No chest bumping celebrating high fiving no passion. No saying they don't play hard and try their best but the never seemed hyped even when they doing good

Zaire takes some strange angles to the ball. I don't know a lot, but I know that.

And the ball skills on some of our backs are rough. No wonder they play defense.

Agreed that he hasn't been the impact guy we hoped.

But again, this is a player that ideally wouldn't have been pressed into action as a true freshman. Instead he was our defensive captain as a true sophomore.

We're looking to him to be a star. Truthfully, there should be veteran guys around him to help carry the load.

All well and good and in a perfect world I agree with you. But he's a junior now. All of the game experience should be showing and he should be better than what he is.

I think he'd look a lot better than he does now with a viable secondary and some experienced defensive ends.

I can't recall a worse D at any school. I have no faith we will get a stop and I am only left with the hope that the other team messes up.

The crazy thing is that Colgate, Louisville, USF all had the dropsies. We have been lucky that things have not been worse. Eventually our luck will run out.

That being said USF only put up 38 points today offensively. That should have been good enough to make it a game.

The biggest issue I had today was the 4th down play, and Dino was to blame as well. USF went up to the line quickly and our kids were waiting for a call from the sidelines. They then seemed confused and had trouble getting lined up. When USF was getting ready to snap the ball we had no one on the entire right side of the D. This is right in front of Dino, he should have recognized that and called TO. It was obvious before the snap that we were . I HATE taking a TO in the 2nd half. I HATE taking a TO on D. In this case it was the right move. It wouldn't have been to prevent a 1st down but a big play, which is what happened. The USF coaches had to be laughing after this play. I am sure there was more than one player who was not lined up properly, but the coaches need to recognize that.

There were positives on D

-The DL played relatively well. They got more pressure today than the previous games.
-I really like what I have seen from Ellison this year.

DB should look back for the ball when he sees the receivers eyes get big. If he makes no attempt to turn and see the ball, and just tries to face guard, 9 out of 10 times it's a penalty for P.I.

Ellison and Williams played well IMO. At this point stick with them and redshirt Foster

This D is the same as last year's D, horrible. The difference this year is they're out there for more plays because of the style of O. Shafer did his best to hide the horrible defense last year by running one of the slowest offenses in D1, this year we're running one of the fastest and there is no hiding it. Does no one remember the number of games we lost last year because the D couldn't get a stop and off the field in a 4th quarter?

I'm not sure it does a lot of good whining about it after every game, it's going to take a couple years of recruiting to hopefully build it up. I'm hoping that as the current players get more experience, size and strength they get a bit better, but I'm no longer expecting miracles with the current group. Given the youth of everyone and the lack of seniors on the 2-deep, there's some hope for improvement, but major improvement will have to come from roster turnover.

Another shocking poor in game coaching decision was earlier in the game. USF had a 4th and 1 and took awhile to decide to go for it. Ultimately Lined up to punt and SU still had its full defense in the game. Instead of feeling comfortable with a full D package with a DB as return man, they ran out their full return team and looked like keystone cops with players running into each other, USF inexplicably didn't snap the ball for too many men on the field and 5 yard penalty. Seemed everyone got off the field and they punted. Penalty for 12 men on the field instead of over 20. Once you could see this happening I was yelling call a timeout...No timeout USF first down which was like a turnover.

Every year I get massacred on signing day for saying our recruiting sucks. Every year during the season the excuse rampant on this board is that we don't have the players. Rinse and repeat.

We're never going to be competitive with top level programs until we start recruiting above the basement of the ACC.

And how to recruit when you only win 4 games a year...

And what was our recruiting when we won 3 bowl games in 5 years?

I just find it amazing that every year there's talk about great our recruiting class is when we're ranked 13th or 14th in the conference and yet every year it's the same excuse about not having the bodies to be competitive.

If Baylor can turn around their program from their dumpsterfire, I have confidence Babers can too for ours.

What's Houston ranked right now? 6th. Anyone take a look at what their recruiting classes looked like the past several years? 2015: 92nd. 2014: 76th. 2013: 56th.

This year: 35th.

The recruiting ratings of their starting front 7:
Jerard Carter: 2 star
Ed Oliver: 5 star
Cameron Malveaux: 2 star

LBs:
Tyus Bowser: 3 star
Matthew Adams: 3 star
Steven Taylor: 2 star
D'Juan Hines: 2 star

Most of them are 3+ years into the program. Only one, Ed Oliver, is an underclassman (and highly rated).

The point of this post? 1st, to defend these kids. S T with the "lack of talent" crap. Most of our guys are 1-2 years into SU, and they've already have had to deal with 2 coaching staffs, two totally differing defensive schemes, and lots of injuries. Our kids, coming out of high school, pretty much match what Houston's got, and, as we can all see, Houston doesn't suck. 2nd. Implementing a new D and a new O is traumatic. Sht's gonna happen. They're ALL learning (including the staff). So, for those btching about how much we suck, cut them some goddamn slack. It's going to be a train wreck, interspersed with flashes of what this team will become by 2018. BE PATIENT and a bit more understanding of what's happened, and what's going on with these boys.
