I just purchased a new iPhone and am now pondering the relevence of a computer and the internet. Is there anyone out there that just uses their phones to discuss here? Has anyone dropped their internet connection ($$$$$) in favor of just using their phones? Pros and cons ... Please.
Thanx

It honestly depends on the extent to which you use the internet, but more importantly, what you use it for. I use my internet and computer for a ton of different things, from general browsing, to email, to paying bills, to playing games. As such, just my smartphone would not suffice. In addition to this, your connection using your iPhone will be a ton faster if you are in your house and you have a wireless router to connect to instead of your standard cell phone signal. Also, looking at your post count, you post fairly often and you'd have to consider the fact that you'd be using the touch screen to type, which takes a lot of people time to get used to.

If you're okay with the relatively small screen, and you find that you fairly exclusively browse forums or general internet sites, then you can probably get by with just your phone.

The only exception to this would probably be SWC. His non-opposable thumbs would probably break the screen if he only tried using his phone to post.

Well, you can always set your iPhone up as a router and connect your computer to the 3G/4G network, which can work OK if you have good reception. But if you like to browse the web fast and/or use Netflix, ESPN3, etc then you may want keep your high-speed online.

In my opinion, the iPhone is great for reading an online article on the john, but I would never drop my high-speed connection for it.

Tapatalk

Doh, that was the one thing I forgot to mention - Tapatalk is a fantastic way to browse forums more quickly than having to load the whole webpage. Well worth the $2.99 I believe it costs. Check out the app.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe 4G is one of the few things the iPhone currently does not support.

Thanks all ... one thing I do ... big time ... is pay bills on the computer. Can I do the same from my phone tho?

With the new update, and an iPhone 4S, they say that the iPhone is now at 4G speed, my iPhone now has a 4g icon instead of 3G. I noticed a 1 Mgbt difference in speed.

When my computer's running slowly, I read the board almost exclusively through Tapatalk, but as people have said, if you're watching videos or whatever, I'd generally just go with the computer/wifi.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Speaking of the new update, I updated to version 5.whatever and now half my apps disappeared. ANd when I go to the AppStore it doesn't show them as previously purchased, leading me to believe I would be re-billed. Did anyone else experience this?

I can't fathom doing everything through my iPhone - I rarely use it to surf the internet (not counting the apps that deliver news, which are great, but mostly just to kill time). I watch movies on it when I'm bored, and stream radio all the time, but rarely use it to actually randomly browse the internet.

THIS is why I'm still hesistant and sitting on iOS 4.2 something. Don't want to lose my apps cuz my old iTunes is on a computer I don't have anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can authorize up to 5 (I think) computers with your iTunes account. I guess the only thing I'd suggest is do a full sync with your current computer before doing the iOS upgrade. Once you have a backup copy on your iTunes you're all set. When I upgraded to the 4S a few months ago I synced with my computer and I got everything that I had previously purchased onto my new phone with the same layout and everything.

I would give up heat and running water before I give up my desktop. I hate tapatalk and using my phone to do stuff. Too small and my fingers are too fat. I think I am the only 40 year old left on the planet who does not have an ipod or an itunes account.

Hmmm...I'll try that

Man, marsh, do you hate sex and beer too?
#TAPATALK4EVA

Sex? Oh you mean that thing I used to have before kids? I vaguely remember that. Beer? C'mon. I would give up air before beer. Tapatalk is easier than going on the website via a phone but give me my desktop anyday of the week.

TDT is correct. Just update and update your iTunes, you will be fine. I have not lost an app yet and our family has 3 touches, and iPhone 3 and and iPhone 4.

Sherm, here is the bad news about your 4S running 4G. Nothing really has changed except Apples "definition" of 4G. I thought the same thing you did, "WOW, what a pleasant surprise!" Then I read this article and was bummed.

You very well may be correct - I'm definitely no tech expert.

No flash=no video on many websites. Otherwise, pretty good phone. Much more stable OS than android, although the android is making huge strides each time they bring out a new update...

Since Adobe has pulled the plug on mobile Flash clients expect that to become even less of an issue than it already is. If you just want things to work and can afford the data plans it's easiest just to be assimilated by the company that Steve built.

For cheaper unlimited plans (with not-so-glitzy phones) there are Android options with Boost, MetroPCS and other secondary providers.

You may find discounts available from the major carriers through your employer.

I have an iPhone, iPad, and computer. I couldn't go solo with the iPhone because I have different needs for the computer...applications and peripherals, etc

You might want to go cold turkey on the computer for two months and see if you are comfortable with using the iPhone exclusively for that period...that will answer your question for you.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I still listen to CD's and (hush) some tapes I have. Other than the new VH album I havent bought a new piece of music in 10+ years.

Oh oh ... I am well over 40 (well maybe not well over) and I have an iTunes account (I love my tunes ... especially when on the boat or working in the yard ... can't hear my wife) ... but my iPod when pfffffft. Ergo the reason I got an iPhone.
