Looks like UL to B12 is the hot rumor. Academics be damned but I would like Louisville to the ACC. Oh well...it isn't going to happen. They will wait on Notre Dame.

This is the Big East in 2013..wow is it getting ugly.

Mark, in your humble opinion, do you think its wise for the ACC to wait on ND? Seems like with the way things have shaken out over the last few months, they may be able to sustain themselves as an independent for the forseeable future. Heck, the B12 was supposedly history as of last fall, now all of a sudden they are a growing power. I'm so confused by conference expansion, I can't even begin to guess at what will happen next.

and BTW, based on that link you posted, if those rumors hold true, SU replaces UL and WVU next year with Temple and Memphis. Definitely winnable games.

No way Louisville leaves in '12...that was wishful thinking by a Louisville fan. I would bet UL/Pitt/Cuse all bolt for '13. Personally if I were the ACC I would have the TV guys (ESPN) give their opinion on taking Lousville and UConn or Rutgirls. Then the ACC should make ND a one time offer to join. I would even let keep their NBC contract through the completion. I feel Louisville offers the ACC more upside athletically over UConn or Rutgirls.

Gives ND a mid west partner as well.

The Ville also provides the ACC with another SEC rival (to UK) ala FSU-Fla, Clemson-SC and GT-Georgia. The Girls and Conmen bring nothing.

This shouldn't be all that confusing. You may be over-thinking it or it may be that some of your basic assumptions about why the ACC has expanded in the past and why they might in the future are wrong.

First thing to think about is that the ACC isn't really looking to add teams, unless that team is ND.

Notre Dame represents to the ACC a huge step up in visibility and National appeal. An ACC contract with ND is vastly more attractive than an ACC TV contract without them. No other school does this for the ACC. So anytime that ND wants to join, the ACC will say, "Welcome Aboard". The ACC wants ND to join, but they aren't going to try to leverage them in with the threat of a one time offer. Both ND and the ACC would know that this would be an empty threat. Never give someone an ultimatum, if you aren't really serious.

No other school moves the meter like ND does. So there's little incentive for the ACC to add schools just to add schools. Remember, they added SU and Pitt to take advantage of an increase in the TV value of college sports that was demonstrated by the PAC10 deal and the provision in the TV contract that allowed them to renegotiate if they added two more schools. They also believed that SU and Pitt would help ACC basketball which has been declining recently.

L'ville is the only remaining BE school where the athletic department is well in the black which I hope legit conferences consider. Not sure where they stand vs WVU academically but that may be their main hurdle. If the ACC can get ND and L'ville they'd be solid additions for both major sports. Also, Strong may be a long term coach and build something special if he's in a secure conference. Pitino would obviously resign due to his moral objections though.

On topic

I really hope Temple to the BE can happen this year so I can make the hour trip to the Linc to watch the Orangemen in action. Otherwise they'll never play in Philly unless it's OOC.

The Big 12 only hung together because of ESPN boosting their TV contract above market rates to avoid their collapse and trigger some major antitrust action. When that artificially-high contract comes up for renegotiation, things will get interesting. It depends on how Texas's Long Horn Network is doing at that point.

According to this Big 12 not ready to expand right now but UL is first choice for next member.

Here's the bottom line on this story - Temple is joining for this fall 2012-13 season, because the Big East didn't want to give the money to Boise to enable them to buy out their MWC obligations. The Providence Mafia decides to keep the money for the hoops schools. Screw the football schools again. What douche-nozzlery.

This may actually come back to bite the Big East in a big way - just like TCU never actually made it here, by not giving Boise the money (which WVU gave the Big East ...) to get them here now, there is a one-year window in which more Big 12 movement will likely take place. Boise may never arrive, either, if the whole mountain west - cusa merger talk takes place. Everything is so fluid right now that Marinatto should have locked them down when he had the chance.

I think Louisville is (and has been) a no brainer. The Big 12 is going to move to 12 teams there is no doubt. Then I firmly believe the next team to be poached will be Cinncinati - which puts the Big12 into Ohio and makes a nice little 3 team regional posse.

The 3 of WVU, LVille and Cincy to get to 12 makes to much sense.

LHN is still not on Comcast nor Directv, as well as several other carriers. So, it's safe to assume it's not doing well at all. Comcast just redid some contracts with ESPN/ABC in January, but did not include LHN in that contract.

uhoh, Frank the Tank is posting in that thread.

Frank The Tank is a regular over there...I really like that board. We are trying to get the ACC Board more active. There is also a conference realignment board too.

BTW, we have about 5-10 Cuse regulars here who post over there. Always love to get more Cuse fans. This is still the best board for Cuse sports but if you like to talk BE/ACC or Realignment then I recommend signing up over there.

He's done so well in all of this...

Hilarious. Spot on.

How can anybody assign any credibility whatsoever to the T? He hasn't been right about anything after suggesting all sorts of knowledge / insight.

The guy just keeps getting up off the floor and keeps on keeping on.

Is America a great country or what?

True enough but he is always a good read...even if some of it is wrong. I think he is a lawyer and an Illinois/Depaul grad.

Where is there any new news in there? Seems like a rehash of what others have said for awhile.

BTW, when exactly is Memphis joining the BE? Isn't it for the 2013 season?

Sums it up perfectly. Why add for the sake of adding? Stay at 14. If ND ever wants to join, you can go to 16. If not, what's the point? Unless you could talk some SEC team out of staying there, which would be like me talking the Yankees out of using CC Sabathia and using me instead because I'm also 6 foot and left handed.

Are you talking about the UConn board for Conf. Realignment ? I'm on that one all the time (although they may not appreciate it so much ...)

I don't know - he called Nebraska to the Big 10 correctly, and I believe his chain about Texas being in negotiations with them last time around. He got the whole "it's about brand" concept right. Expansions so far have been a lot less about academic fit and contiguous opponents than about the quality of the brand for TV purposes. That's a major hit that he was first to call.

The ACC also added us because ESPN wanted to punish the Big East for turning down their TV offer. Don't forget that part, because that's a big key, or we may never have gotten off the Island of Misfit Toys.

Some? Almost everything he said was wrong, the only things he may have gotten right is because he threw enough darts at the dartboard eventually one of them hit something.

PurpleBookCat was the other that achieved epic fail.

Unless the NCAA allows for a conference playoff. Then adding a 15th team makes sense as you can have 3 divisions of 5 for both sports.
