Seeing a list of potential replacements does make me less content to wait for Shafer to figure things out.You have to admit that it was interesting to read about the coaches ready/wanting to move up.
i'd guess that 90% of posters here think that shafer is on the hot seat (not that 90% think he deserves to be)
why is thamel getting criticized for having the same opinion
Are 90% of the posters correct? I don't think they are necessarily correct. Reason Thamel gets criticized is because he should know better than to create rumors - unless those rumors are founded. Or maybe he's no better than any other sensationalistic hack that works in the media these days. Thought he was.
Maybe the rumors will eventually be true, but I don't think they are in August prior to the season.
ha!Well, you can go wrong, but it's still a generally good way to go...
Patricia is an RPI guy. Not sure he's the right selection for the long term ala Bill O'Brien but he is a very smart cat and certainly a guy who should be looked into either way. I still think Schiano has to be investigated too if he's unemployed.
I think Thamel is getting the news out there that SU has to go to a bowl or Shafer is going to be gone. Not sure why this is surprising or angering to anyone.
Who they would hire is anyone's guess. My guess is the new AD will canvass candidates locally, nationally etc and see what works for the Syracuse market, etc.
u don't have to be Carnac to realize that a new AD + a new chancellor + a coach who was hired by a former AD/Chancellor + mediocre results so far = implied hot seat. Thamel is reading the tea leaves. He may also have been whispered to by the new AD, one of these guys who does consulting for coaching hires, boosters, etc.
I think people are wayyy too optimistic about Shafer's chances if we are not a bowl team.
I think this is an inaccurate post. Pretty sure Coyle hasn't whispered boo to anyone about this.
if this season starts 2-2 or worse i sure as hell hope he's preparing for the doomsday scenario. I'm rooting for a 6-1 start and this all to be moot but I want our AD pro-active about a change if the change is necessary. I'm just laying out the obvious points.
I don't really think its going out on a limb to say that Schafer needs to win this year, esp with a new ad at the helm.
Stop making crap up or projecting your inner wishes.
I think they have honestly talked things out and both seem to be upbeat.
agree. it would be nuts to fire shafer for having a down year on defense. 5-7 with much better offense will be good enoughIt's not a limb, but just how much "win" in "needs to win" is unknown.
If recruiting is going well, the offense looks like it's on the path to being functional, the D is weaker than last year but show's promise... and we go a competitive 5-7... I don't think he'd necessarily get fired.
Bowl or bust is too simplistic, there are lot of variables in play.
sadly, i hope that '7th' loss would be bc in this scenario.agree. it would be nuts to fire shafer for having a down year on defense. 5-7 with much better offense will be good enough

Do you really think a new AD is going to can a coach (who has been to a bowl game) in his third year if he doesn't go 6-6 (where you can still easily not go to a bowl) with our schedule? 3-9 again - possibility. 5-7 or better - no way.Considering we have a new AD, I think going to a bowl game could be the min. You know the ad is going to want to make his mark on SU, and hiring his guy would be doing that.
