Thamel article on coach hot seat & others

If Matt Patricia was a realistic candidate, it would be an absolute Home Run, Grand Slam variety.

You have to admit that it was interesting to read about the coaches ready/wanting to move up.

Seeing a list of potential replacements does make me less content to wait for Shafer to figure things out.

i'd guess that 90% of posters here think that shafer is on the hot seat (not that 90% think he deserves to be)

why is thamel getting criticized for having the same opinion

Are 90% of the posters correct? I don't think they are necessarily correct. Reason Thamel gets criticized is because he should know better than to create rumors - unless those rumors are founded. Or maybe he's no better than any other sensationalistic hack that works in the media these days. Thought he was.

Maybe the rumors will eventually be true, but I don't think they are in August prior to the season.

u don't have to be Carnac to realize that a new AD + a new chancellor + a coach who was hired by a former AD/Chancellor + mediocre results so far = implied hot seat. Thamel is reading the tea leaves. He may also have been whispered to by the new AD, one of these guys who does consulting for coaching hires, boosters, etc.

I think people are wayyy too optimistic about Shafer's chances if we are not a bowl team.

Well, you can go wrong, but it's still a generally good way to go... ;)

ha!

theres a Steve Serby from the Post article out there...and ive looked and i cant find it, for apparently a higher authority has found a way to delete it in from the internet, but he had a great big one about how the Giants should fire TC, payoff NDs out clause and bring weiss in.

hindsight being 20/20 that alone calls for someone to find Richard Todd and get him to stuff Serby in a locker everyday for the rest of his career. http://www.nytimes.com/1981/11/17/sports/nassau-drops-todd-case.html

Patricia is an RPI guy. Not sure he's the right selection for the long term ala Bill O'Brien but he is a very smart cat and certainly a guy who should be looked into either way. I still think Schiano has to be investigated too if he's unemployed.

I think Thamel is getting the news out there that SU has to go to a bowl or Shafer is going to be gone. Not sure why this is surprising or angering to anyone.

Who they would hire is anyone's guess. My guess is the new AD will canvass candidates locally, nationally etc and see what works for the Syracuse market, etc.

Thamel is speculating just like the rest of the media and fans. Coyle would be insane to draw a line in the sand at bowl game. 2-10 yep go right ahead but if this team makes strides and shows improvement a 5-7 yr should not be the demise of Shafer.

I think it's safe to say that no one really knows how warm Shafer's seat is, right up to our new AD.

I tend to think he'll get a 4th year absent a disaster this season, because I think ultimately our new AD will conclude that there's more risk in removing him too early than in letting him stay a year too long.

Hopefully we have a great year and the decision is easy.

I think this is an inaccurate post. Pretty sure Coyle hasn't whispered boo to anyone about this.

if this season starts 2-2 or worse i sure as hell hope he's preparing for the doomsday scenario. I'm rooting for a 6-1 start and this all to be moot but I want our AD pro-active about a change if the change is necessary. I'm just laying out the obvious points.

Well yes, I agree with you. And I'm sure Coyle has an idea of what he wants to do. And I think he would have been prudent to reach out to a search firm - if that's the avenue he wants to take in regards to hiring a football coach.

Personally, I hate this route. The last time we went this route we got Greg Robinson. One of the many reasons he was hired for this job was because he has a network from the places he worked in the past. I'm pretty sure he knows who he could reach out to in order to hire a guy that would be a good fit for us, if the season took a turn.

I just can't believe Thamel has any inside knowledge of any of this at this time - especially given the fact that Coyle has been on the job all of a month or two.

I know Edsall did a solid job at UConn but someone tell me why a guy who inherited a 10 win team and has yet to win more than 7 after four years is the guy Coyle should call. I hope Coyle doesn't need to call anyone but if he does I sure as hell hope it isn't Randy. Him and possibly Locksley standing on our sideline is a nauseating thought

I don't really think its going out on a limb to say that Schafer needs to win this year, esp with a new ad at the helm.

June 29th Syracuse.com article Bud P quoted Coyle "I will never hang a number out there" At Kentucky with Rich Brooks after 4 mediocre years Coyle said "lets give it some time" Read people! Coyle's views are out there. Stop making crap up or projecting your inner wishes. Stop making Coyle out to be a liar. Shafer has at least 2 years minimum with Coyle. I think they have honestly talked things out and both seem to be upbeat.

It's not a limb, but just how much "win" in "needs to win" is unknown.

If recruiting is going well, the offense looks like it's on the path to being functional, the D is weaker than last year but show's promise... and we go a competitive 5-7... I don't think he'd necessarily get fired.

Bowl or bust is too simplistic, there are lot of variables in play.

agree. it would be nuts to fire shafer for having a down year on defense. 5-7 with much better offense will be good enough

sadly, i hope that '7th' loss would be bc in this scenario.

Considering we have a new AD, I think going to a bowl game could be the min. You know the ad is going to want to make his mark on SU, and hiring his guy would be doing that.

Do you really think a new AD is going to can a coach (who has been to a bowl game) in his third year if he doesn't go 6-6 (where you can still easily not go to a bowl) with our schedule? 3-9 again - possibility. 5-7 or better - no way.
