Thamel: It’s GMac

I can see this going two ways.
But the most important thing is that other programs do not stand still. He’ll have his work cut out for him.
We won’t know until next Feb.
we will know way before then, first thing we will know is if the rumors about $$ available is true, you will see that with our roster make up, then by 3rd week of January you will see our pecking order in ACC.

It was always going to be G Mac.

The last three years could have been avoided had Wildhack or Boeheim had the foresight to have an admittedly uncomfortable conversation with Autry about five years ago related to seeking head coaching experience elsewhere. Instead, they let Autry stay in the AHC chair so he would be the next man up when Boeheim became too big a headache.

The alternative to this theory is that they thought Autry would be a good coach. This alternative is too frightening for me to fathom. If the same people who thought Autry would be a good coach at Syracuse are the same people who ensured G Mac would take over this time around, we are basically hoping we hit Powerball.

I really liked our roster this year.
We got off to a good start (Iowa State notwithstanding).

I don’t know that he was my choice, but over the past two years he has shown two things:

1. A clear upward trajectory. His career has momentum and if we miss him this cycle there’s a pretty decent chance we’d lose him forever and his success elsewhere would seed envy.
2. An ability to scheme defense. People are quick to dismiss the Duke game, but the way he mixed double teams with zone was expert and tactical and left even the Boozer twins looking lost at times. For a long team people wanted Boeheim to ditch zone thinking it was out of date. Gerry and half a dozen other teams this year have shown that zone is alive, it just needed an evolution that is arriving.

His offense is, at best, a B-. The asst coach hire will be critical, but I suspect the relatively lower salary he is getting will give us our absolute choice there.

Listen I was team BH as well. G-Mac was probably my 3rd or 4th choice. Does not mean he can’t have success here.

To sell you on G-Mac; the guy went to Siena 2 years ago where they were a 4 win team. They dramatically improved in G-macs first year and year 2 they won 20+ games, won their conference and took the overall number 1 seed in the tourney to the wire and probably should have beat them. That’s an impressive rebuild no matter what level of D1 basketball. Furthermore, he has shown he can identify and develop talent. Doty and Folefac were sophomores and freshman this year respectively. Neither was even rated by any recruiting services and both killed it this year. Doty 18ppg and would be a solid 6 to 7th man here. Folefac is probably a legit P4 starter that G-Mac has identified and developed those 2. Continued, G-Mac is Syracuse through and through. He has the playing career, championship and now coaching chops to back it up. He was an assistant here a long time. He knows what it takes to win here and what the expectations are as fans, alumni and former players. Lastly people are gonna compare G-Mac and Autry. Not comparable. Autry should have never gotten the head job. I was very vocal about it the day he was hired and I know a few others were as well. If you were gonna hand it over. It should have been to G-Mac 3 years ago…..G-Mac is a lot better in game coach, actually makes half time adjustments, knows a sub rotation, is actually basketball smart, is a much better communicator than Autry and can command a room like Autry could now. Players play HARD for G-Mac and they love playing got him. I’m telling you right now you give Autry and G-Mac the same roster and they got head to head. G-Macs team is winning 9/10 times.

Once again G-Mac was not my first choice but everyone should be rooting hard for him and donating. G-Mac is Syracuse through and through and if you are a true Cuse fan you should be rooting HARD for the success of any Cuse coach. Especially a legend like G-Mac. I want nothing more than for G-Mac to win one as a player and a few as a coach here. Build that statue for him and be the best to ever to do it at Cuse

I probably already know the answer to this question but is it possible for him to just be a normal contributor to the program and stop all the “look at me look at me I’m in the Dome with one of the Baldwin brothers” cheesiness.
Probably not. My question would be is lally gonna feel a way and another problem occurs.

A lot of posters were team Hodgson. For those that are Team Gerry? What do you love about his style? How comfortable are you with the next 5 years at SU?

The Duke game was great, but i really am nervous about that being a flash in the pan game for him.
Honestly, I wouldn’t want Hodgson after he chose to go to Providence. Providence is a nice school but it does not compare to Syracuse University.
