Thamel: It’s GMac

Syracuse played well against Houston.

I think the “heart and passion” thing is way overblown. There’s some value - but if you can’t motivate a 24-6 team to play hard, that’s an impressive level of incompetence, And if you can motivate a 6-24 team to play hard - you may be the best bad coach ever because that is effectively impossible.

Honestly, I think the fact he kept an objectively mediocre team playing hard last year is more impressive than getting a team to play hard in an NCAA tournament game. If they didn’t play hard, that’s should have disqualified him from consideration.
I hear you but I didn’t say “play hard” - it’s a gritty, smart, playing w emotion thing I always admired about GMac

Why pass that along? Doesn’t pass the sniff test for me.
Doesn’t pas any test with everything we know about Gerry as a player. The guy nails 6 three pointers and suddenly realizes he is playing for a title. No way

I wish it could of been a 3 year deal and we can get out of it at 2 years if it isn’t going good.
I’m sure someone will say if it was only three years then he wouldn’t take it!

Which is of course false because there was never a chance he wouldn’t take this job

It's like those studies where they have people read entire paragraphs with the correct first and last letter of each word and the rest of each word spelled incorrectly.

Being dyslexic, I miss parts of words when reading and I'm lousy at spelling. I really missed that one.
When I give directions, I tell people to watch my hands and not listen to my mouth, I'll point left and say right. It makes for some funny moments.

I shared it in the flow of conversation. I don’t care who believes it. I don’t know if it’s true.

Obviously the coach wasn’t there. It was second hand info. You know, like every “insider” thing that was posted on this board for the past few weeks.

It’s weird that people think it’s a negative if true. Gerry was 18. Gerry is a human being. People get nervous. They tighten up. It’s biology, not some kind of terrible weakness.

We don’t need to myth make. Gerry’s accomplishments were great on their own without suggesting he’s a Marvel super hero.

I’m not excited, and have questions and reservations, but of course I want him to succeed. I wanted someone else, but I hope GMac becomes the best and most successful coach in history.

It really is such lame, moronic, binary thinking, that assertion that those of us who preferred someone else “hate” Gerry. No one hates him. No one. We just had different ideas and expectations. Equate that to if my mother said she was running for President. I’d say she isn’t qualified. Does that mean I hate her? Just dumb.

Whatever, that’s over, or at least it should be. I have no doubts it will continue as a theme on the forum, to divide us and to serve as an ‘I told ya so’ foundation….

I’m now focused on recruiting and the portal. If we get Doty, cool, but I hope not to be a centerpiece. I don’t remember incredibly positive assessments of GMac as a recruiter. I think it was even ‘reported’ that he doesn’t inspire ‘in the room.’ If someone has an insider’s rejection of that characterization, I’d love to see it. I also believe our NIL dollars are going to be worth pennies on the dollar, as we have to convince impact players that this isn’t just the next step on the continuation path of he last handful of seasons.

For me, Gmac's 1st year expectations are clear. It needs to be a winning season and competing for an NCAA tournament berth at minimum. This year's 1st year ACC coaches/records are as follows:

Luke Loucks-18-15 overall, 10-8 ACC
Jai Lucas- 26-9 , 13-5, NCAA Tournament Berth
Will Wade- 20-14, 10-8, NCAA Tournament Berth
Ryan Odom- 30-6, 15-3, NCAA Tournament Berth

All successful seasons and 3/4 made the tourney. We absolutely need to have the same standards and expectations. The days of slow rebuilds are over
