Thamel: It’s GMac

There's going to be an even shorter leash for GMac. There has to be a tournament appearance year 1. It sounds unfair, but that's just how it is. Fans will have goodwill to start, but that will burn out very fast if there aren't big game results before the start of conference play. I hope the AD realizes how much is at stake after April 7th, because this will get ugly quick if there isn't a successful offseason.

I shared it in the flow of conversation. I don’t care who believes it. I don’t know if it’s true.

Obviously the coach wasn’t there. It was second hand info. You know, like every “insider” thing that was posted on this board for the past few weeks.

It’s weird that people think it’s a negative if true. Gerry was 18. Gerry is a human being. People get nervous. They tighten up. It’s biology, not some kind of terrible weakness.

We don’t need to myth make. Gerry’s accomplishments were great on their own without suggesting he’s a Marvel super hero.

Eh. Context matters. I went back and rewatched the second half of the championship game - Kansas blanketed Gerry so he had almost no shot opportunities. He did have a couple bad turnovers, partly due to that defensive pressure. Nothing that stood out as evidence the moment was getting to him though. What was getting to him was being double teamed constantly.

Is it possible? Sure. But he’s also the guy that led to the “not ten ******* games” rant by JB for supposedly being overrated. Is “he choked in the championship game” part of that narrative in other Big East locker rooms? Maybe.

I’m not sure doubting the accuracy of the information from a guy who wasn’t there, when there’s no clear evidence from the game, AND “overrated” is a big part of Gerry’s history qualifies as suggesting he’s a Marvel superhero. It’s more just doubting someone who doesn’t have any evidence to back up what he said, but may have a vested interest in spinning that narrative (or believed someone who had such an interest).

Ok sure

Doty and Folefac can 100% play at this level. Moesch makes me nervous as he’s really small but he is definitely skilled. LOVE Folefac. I think he could probably be an ACC level starter at most ACC schools tbh. I’m fine with Doty coming here but off the bench. He’ll be a good 6th or 7th man.
Siena alum here. Folefac is good but missed a ton of bunnies in Atlantic City. I wouldn’t feel good about him being a starting 5

The only questions you should be asking about GMAC are: 1) how may season tickets should I buy; and 2) where do I send my check or credit card number for recurring NIL donation. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something special! Thank you.

i don't like his hands. seems to bobble a lot of passes even tho he usually recovers.

I have some questions I'm not sure have been addressed:

1. Was this a Blair hire, a Wildhack hire, and/or a hire by other SU bigwigs?

2. Would he have been hired had he lost to Merrimack, or stunk out the joint vs. Duke?

3. Was this carefully thought out, or was it largely a visceral reaction to the Siena feel-good story?

4. What other candidates, besides Hodgson, were considered?

At least one inquiring mind wants to know.
Great post.

Nahhh. Gerry is wildly popular. Obviously we all hope he has raging success from day one. But if he doesn’t there will be an endless amount of rationalizing and support for him. I suspect he’ll have to be an abject disaster to lose support inside of 4 years. He’ll get a longer leash than Red.

Yeah okay

Can one of our donors demand that his money is contingent on Gerry wearing a suit on the sideline? I’d like to class it up, and purge the memory of Red’s schlubby athleisure look.

Not saying they should look like they just rolled out of bed, but put me down in the anti-suit crowd. They’re coaching college kids playing basketball, not giving the state of the union address.

Fresh quarter zip with Block S, good fitting khaki or athleisure pants, and simple clean sneaks is the way to go.

You want him canned if the doesn't make the tournament next year?

You’re wrong. It’s OK, most people are wrong and that’s why our society looks like hobos.

I disagree. It’s about communication and expectation. Red took over a talented Boeheim bunch as a continuity hire, promising a return to the Orange standard, after many believed Boeheim lost his touch. The expectations were big right away because Boeheim was the problem, the game had passed him by. Same with this year. Highly touted freshmen, meaningful games in March, sky high spending coming into the season. The expectations were high based on the circumstances. Compare that with Dino. He started with belief without evidence and set the expectation it would take a couple years to see results. People were patient and Dino delivered in year 2. If Gerry and ADBB set the expectation this year is about establishing a core and a culture. I believe people will be supportive. The friction arises when there is a mismatch between the rhetoric from the key players, the circumstances, and the product on the floor. If Gerrry comes in shouting “final four or bust” and he flames out, then fair game.

I’m not wrong, just disagree with you. It’s OK, most people can’t acknowledge different viewpoints, it’s why our society is as polarized as it is.

Yea we'll get it for you year 1 for sure - amazing.

4 years?!?! Thats insane. Just look at the 1st year ACC head coach records I posted earlier. 3 out of the 4 new head coaches in the league made the tournament, with the 4th (Loucks at FSU) went 18-15 and 10-8 in ACC play. Kelsey at Louisville did it last year too. Its really not that big of an expectation. If we're spending in the top 3rd of the acc, then we should have top 3rd expectations

No we don’t need to myth make, but we also don’t need to falsely bring him down. If you don’t know if it’s true, maybe reconsider posting it next time, especially a story from a rival coach.
It’s not weird, it just doesn’t sound consistent with what we know about GMAC. He never played afraid, and that statement is not anywhere near suggesting he is a Marvel super hero.

How do we know he never played afraid? Such a silly thing to argue about. The guy told an anecdote. That's what happens here.
