There's going to be an even shorter leash for GMac. There has to be a tournament appearance year 1. It sounds unfair, but that's just how it is. Fans will have goodwill to start, but that will burn out very fast if there aren't big game results before the start of conference play. I hope the AD realizes how much is at stake after April 7th, because this will get ugly quick if there isn't a successful offseason.

Years and years ago I sat next to a former Villanova assistant coach at the Big East tourney. We got to chatting. He knew Gerry from his high school days in Scranton.

The story was that when SU got into the locker room at halftime of the title game, up 18, the enormity of the moment hit Gerry. He kinda freaked out, got super tight, and struggled in the second half. I mean, he was 18 and in the national title game. So I totally get it.

I don’t buy it. If people remember, he ran into the scorer’s table and hurt his wrist. That’s what impacted him

To say someone who rises to a head coach lacks passion and heart is crazy. They’ve put in years of crazy long hours, travel, relatively low pay, for the chance to rise to the top. Guys like Autry may be more reserved/less expressive than a guy like Gerry, but don’t short change all it took to get there.

I think Red is more Dino. No expression or aggression. Gerry is more K like or scheyer. really tough but good still.

A majority of the fan base will see this as a continuation of JB and Red if we are not winning in late January and February. The game threads will be brutal. I really hope he succeeds because the alternative is real bad for SU long term.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons he freaked out in the locker room. I imagine the pressure was immense already, and he had a great half and wanted to bring it home. Knowing he was going to be limited by his wrist could’ve gotten in his head.

If he is in our starting 5 I suspect he will have had to earn it the hard way including getting stronger and further improving his outside shot. I see him as somewhere between 5 and 7 on the talent chart once all is said and done. He has 3 things going for him at this level - high motor, very quick first step and ability to get his man on his hip and he is a shot maker. He needs to improve his outside shot further, get a little stronger and learn how to be more efficient as not being the primary option on the floor.

I know this is asking a lot, but people need to be reasonable. My expectation is that we look like we know what we're doing and we play with high effort. If we do that, and the NIL is there the way it's being projected, we'll be a tournament team. Every coach will get criticized at some point. What do we think Duke fans were saying at halftime of that game? I just want the criticism we throw at him to be reasonable and not just because we've decided what we think before we even see the team because we wanted something different.

That would make more sense knowing his personality. Not trusting the injured wrist and therefore being confident that he could physically do what he wanted had him backing off. Definitely makes more sense than getting spooked as a frosh. As many of us know when you can’t trust a key part of your body because of injury it has a massive impact on the mental side even in playing pickup ball.

Nova had an asst coach who spent plenty of time around Gerry in his younger days and thus it’s very plausible. I’m not going to go name dropping for everyone to google but the person Scooch is alluding to would definitely know Gerry enough to have had such a conversation.

Seems to be the going length for coaching contracts. I also think he had some leverage once we blew up our other options.
