The 4th Down

So Welch wasn’t warming up between series? I’m agreeing that DeVito was hurt, I just don’t understand why the staff wouldn’t have either (a) had him getting ready after DeVito’s *second* injury, or (b) called a TO before the 4th down so Welch would have a second to prep for the play. If they did (a) no one on the board has said they saw him warming up, or heard that he did.

No matter how you slice it, the whole sequence was strange.

There was a TO.

Not sure why people can’t just admit this- if devito was not hurt and was actually benched, it’s horrible coaching. If devito was hurt and benched just on that fourth down play, it’s horrible coaching. Did anyone really think Welch would complete a pass there?

Kick a field goal.

Game was an absolute coaching disaster. We can admit these things.

Yeah, this. I’m in the camp that DeVito was hurt. But that doesn’t excuse the staff utterly botching how they handled it. It’s not like we don’t have ample evidence of Dino occasionally not making the best of decisions in the heat of the moment. It’s no crime, he’s like 99% of head coaches in that regard.

When Welch came in? Didn’t seem like it.

Welch came in but we were forced to take a TO and he stayed in. During that time Dino could have changed his mind.

Out of curiosity, what was the Vegas line for wins for SU this year?

Yeah, this is where I am.

Just rewatched it and you're right, we did call a TO, my bad on that.

It's still utterly baffling though. DeVito is standing on the sidelines the whole time, and it doesn't appear that Welch ever warmed up prior to this series. I don't think it's the conspiracy that others do, I just think the staff totally blew it. Clayton "In There for His Legs" Welch was asked to throw a designed, 20 yard pass downfield. Simply terrible.

My problem with all of this was why wait until the most pivotal moment in the game to bench TD? If he was hurt earlier, take him out earlier. Don’t wait until we need a score and then say “we need a more mobile QB.” Welch had no chance to complete that throw. TD probably connects with our open receiver on that 4th and 9. I think it was a cop out. The timing made zero sense. Not saying Dino needed a scapegoat for not finishing the game with a chance to win, but he basically gave up with that move.

Not saying TD wasn’t hurt, but if he was it was
managed super poorly.

According to the “Two Minute Drill” video that was just posted on Twitter, DeVito is just a little banged up, but otherwise is fine.

This is all of 2 days after he was pulled on 4th down, and stood on the sideline for the rest of the game receiving no medical attention at all.

Something doesn’t add up.

Is it sad that I think the best case scenario is that Babers just went full moron with the season on the line?

Let Wake think about it.
