Coach Autry’s radio show is on Thursdays, (Wednesdays until the Dino Babers Show ends) from 7-8:30PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show is at Carrabba's Italian Grill at 550 Towne Drive, Fayetteville, NY. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. They are again doing a third half hour segment on Twitch: I think I will save myself some time by posting the main show and linking the Twitch segment the next day when it shows up on You-Tube.

Their schedule: AmeriCU Adrian Autry Radio Show Starts Nov. 14 - Syracuse University Athletics

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
Submit a Question! - Syracuse University Athletics The choice, finally is the “Adrian Autry Show” or the “Fran Brown Show”!
Or on Twitter at x.com or Twitter (@CuseLearfield) using the hashtag #AskAutry.

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometimes simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: TuneIn | Free Internet Radio | Live News, Sports, Music, Audiobooks, and Podcasts If not, try: https://cuse.com/watch?Live=6575&type=Live

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

“Coach, when you went to the locker room down 26 to Maryland, you were fuming, as shown in the brief interview you did at that time. Matt Park said he expected you to give a halftime speech that would “peel the paint off the walls”. We came out for the second half and gave up a lay-up, missed a shot, didn’t get the rebound and gave up a dunk. It was the start of a 2-10 run. Do your players listen to you? Does the team have leaders they will listen to?”

The Twitch Segment:

There won’t be one until January.

COACH AUTRY
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning.)

The answers to my questions:

Q1 – (I softened the question a bit saying that the players should listen to a coach of AA’s experience)
“It was one of those games I break the season down. If you play 30 games, 5 won’t go your way. You’re still looking at young men. Christmastime is tough. You’re digging into a lead. Things just didn’t go their way. The avalanche just kind of kept going.” The entire interview I referred to as the coach went into halftime was “We’re getting our asses kicked….We’re getting our asses kicked…Sorry for the language…We just didn’t show up….We’re getting our asses kicked.” I doubt Red told his players that this was “just one of those games that won’t go your way.

Q2 – (no Twitch segment until January)

Tim Leonard sat in for Matt Park who is in San Diego for the bowl game. He said the show could now be viewed on Cuse.com. I went there and to You-Tube and, as usual, it didn’t work. You can get an audio version.

He asked the Coach if he had a good Christmas. AA said that he did and that he’s “back to work, getting us going in the right direction”. The players got to be home for a couple days but we practiced last night and twice today. Practice has been spirited. The first was sluggish. I told the guys to take a mental break. They are locked in and just have to be prepared and ready for the games.”

‘In the Maryland game, we didn’t play well and didn’t compete. Maryland was physical and pressed us. They made things difficult. One player told me he sees three seasons- the preseason, the conference schedule and the post season. Let’s finish the pre-season and move on. We’ve had a challenging non-conference season. We didn’t schedule 8-9 automatic wins. We’re going to get better. Take away Tennessee and Maryland there are a couple more games we could have won. Let’s finish up the pre-season and move on. These guys are ready.”

I’m a grown man. You can say what you want to about me.
He didn’t say it quite like this: Mike Gundy's 'I'm a man, I'm 40' rant at Oklahoma State [FULL] | ESPN Archives
We have a great fan base. Not playing well will disappointed. I tell the players not to bring the negativity in.” Leonard suggested that the critics are trolls. AA: “I don’t think people take into consideration the impact on the players of expressing your frustration. It’s great the fans care. We’re all frustrated. Toughest. The toughest challenge I’ve had this year with all our newcomers. This can’t define you. You’ve got to keep playing.” Leonard: “Some fans think they are a coach. They want Jayre David, Eddie Lampkin and Donnie Freeman on the court at the same time. AA: “We’ve thought about that. Those guys can score inside – but can they step out? “ [Well Davis can hit pull-ups and Freemen treys. Is that enough?]

Tim said we’ll be getting JJ back and there will be wins to be had in the ACC. Coach said “JJ was plating as well as anyone in the country when he got hurt. JJ trending well but there’s no definitive time for his return.” Chance Westry is still working his way back after two years. I didn’t put him into the right situation against Albany, who had a lot of little guards. [I thought big guys dominated little guys – Oh… that’s football.]

They discussed the retirement of Jim Larranaga, the head coach at U of Miami. AA: I was caught off guard. I played with his son Jay overseas.” TL: “The players said, “We want to play for Miami but get the most money possible.” AA: “It’s a whole different game. If you don’t have the finances, it’s going to be difficult. NIL is a positive but when they passed that it wasn’t meant to be like that. You’ve got to build fast and you don’t know what you’ve got until you get into the fire. We need a level playing ground. When everybody’s jumping around in a few years these guys won’t have degrees but may be trying to support a young family. We’ve lost track of the education piece. Maybe these should be multi-years things so people could try to grow.

Michael Manning called in to say that soccer was supposed to be ‘the beautiful game’ but that basketball was the most rhythmic and musical. What do the players on this year’s team like to play. Coach Autry said “I don’t know what these players are listening to. It’s not the hip hop I knew. We ask them to play the clean version.” That’s probably what JB said when hip hop came out.

Orange Chuck called in simply to express his faith in Coach Autry to turn things around and to say “Go Orange”. AA: “It’s fans like that that make this place special.” [If we got down to fans like that, how many would there be.”

Bucknell has “hung with Kentucky [a 72-100 loss] and played at Maryland [67-91] and against Gonzaga [65-86], so their record is a little deceiving” {if we’re not Kentucky, Maryland or Gonzaga]. “One of their best players went down, too and they’ve kept playing well.” [They’ve lost 6 in a row and are 4-8.]

Adrian went back to bucking us up. “We’ve got to show improvement and continue to do the things we do well.” [Which are are?] We need to rebound, get out and create open 3 pointers, finish around the basket. We’ve got to make it tough for the other team….we haven’t had the best starts. We’re often down by 6 or 8 or 10 at the first TV time out.”

Tim asked for Coach Autry’s ‘message to the fans’. “We’re continuing to improve on things: Compete, play hard and together. That doesn’t change.”

I'm still LOL at your notes 5 minutes after reading them. Great Moments in Coach Speak right there. Thank you.

You're right. He should have just continuously said "WE SUCK" for the entire hour.

PS. I can't find the sarcasm font on my keyboard.

Oh, I wasn't commenting on the Syracuse team. I was commenting specifically on how a coach builds up an opponent who obviously isn't very good. Red worked hard selling Bucknell. That's all.

Unfortunately, at least for this year, the build up is accurate when playing us.

If Red's saying we should have multi-year NIL contracts and make them between school and player, with the only exit being for the pro ranks and not the transfer portal, unless you're getting below a certain threshold of PT the amount of which is determined on a case by case basis, then I think he's on to something.

I like the concept, but I'm afraid the courts would rule against anything that sounds like cost control or player control by the NCAA.

If the players are to remain "students", than the obvious escape for a player would be to fail exams or stop going to classes so they no longer meet academic eligibility the next year so the school would have to let them off to transfer.

If they are not students than what are they, just a minor league that's funded by the schools?

and what about non revenue sport student athletes like badminton or long jump, how do they get funded if they used to be funded via the revenue sports like FB & BB?

There are going to be some fundamental stuff that needs to be sorted out besides basketball.

Then they wouldn't be eligible at their new school either (responding to the part in bold)

different schools have different requirements though.
You still have to be progressing to your degree to meet NCAA requirements, or at least what's left of them.
