Coach Autry’s radio show is on Thursdays, from 7-8:30PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show is at Carrabba's Italian Grill at 550 Towne Drive, Fayetteville, NY. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. They are again doing a third half hour segment on Twitch: I think I will save myself some time by posting the main show and linking the Twitch segment the next day when it shows up on You-Tube.
Their schedule: AmeriCU Adrian Autry Radio Show Starts Nov. 14 - Syracuse University Athletics
You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
Submit a Question! - Syracuse University Athletics The choice, finally is the “Adrian Autry Show” or the “Fran Brown Show”!
Or on Twitter at x.com or Twitter (@CuseLearfield) using the hashtag #AskAutry.
The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometimes simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: TuneIn | Free Internet Radio | Live News, Sports, Music, Audiobooks, and Podcasts If not, try: https://cuse.com/watch?Live=6575&type=Live
MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
Coach, we have 6 wins over non-power conference teams and 7 losses to power conference teams and will play nothing but power conference teams the rest of the way. In the face of that SU fans are in need of some cheering up. Our best player will be back soon. What are the things this team has improved at since the season began and what are we really good at?
The Twitch Segment:
We fell behind 3-19 against Wake Forest and then had a 44-22 run to take the lead. What did we do to create that 44-22 run and can we do that for 40 minutes?
COACH AUTRY
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning.)
The answers to my questions:
Q1 – Matt did read off the question when I failed to call it in, due to my having it E-Mailed first. Michael in Manlius inquired about my health. The primary reason I didn’t call in is because I was watching the Sugar Bowl, but I do have a heath problem. Per a friend’s conversation with his doctor and mine with a nurse at my doctor’s office, “There is a nasty respiratory bug making its way through the community. It involves a perpetually running nose, cough spells that can lead to upchucking, a dyspeptic stomach, some actual pain the upper stomach area, loss of appetite, on and off fevers, loss of energy. Strangely, it does not involve a sore through. My doctor thought he had the answer with Zithromax, (penicillin), but it had no effect. I’ve had this, on and off since Thanksgiving. I don’t even know what it’s called. I’ll have another meeting with my doctor on Wednesday. If anyone has any insights on this, I’d love to hear them.
The answer to the question: ‘We’ve made some transition improvements. Our defensive numbers are going down. We still have droughts. [Defensive droughts?] We’ll play well for 3-4 minute stretches. They have to be longer.”
Matt later said that we “never figured to be a strong defensive team but with JJ Starling and Chris Bell, we figured to out-score people. Without contributions from them, we’re coming up short.“ ‘Mr. B n Phoenix’ asked him to describe a typical practice. “Fast-paced. It’s about reads, spacing how to play in transition, who’s cutting. We practice out of bounds plays a lot. We’re one of the best in the country. It’s teaching, playing concepts and let them kind of bring it all together. We play situations like 3 seconds. We watch film on our next opponent for thirty to 45 minutes.
Matt said that “sometimes you can improve but still make mistakes at the wrong time: losing bit rebounds, turnovers, missed free throws”. AA: “All that stuff adds up. Those can be game-changing, momentum plays.”
Q2 – Still no Twitch segment left
AA: “It was a tough loss. We’re trying to keep the guys battling, but we had too many turnovers.” Matt asked about the start of the game how much he wanted to get to that first TV time-out rather than calling one himself. Coach Autry had a wan smile. “I know my team. Chris had two early turnovers and Eddie had one. Some games, you have to call that time-out quickly. In other games you want to see how things play out.”
Matt pointed out that Lucas Taylor, Jacquan Carlos both had 16 points and Kyle Cuffe had 14. {If those guys are your only double-figure scorers, you’ve got a problem.} Matt said they had certain roles but are ‘coming on’. {Out-performing the guys who are supposed to be carrying the team.] AA; “The work hard, are about the team, compete. They try to do what we ask of them. {Which is what Red has been looking for all year.} “Taylor has always been a shooter. Is he a marksman? He can shoot the ball pretty well. Cuffe is aggressive and throws his body around. Those are the guys who can play for me any day. We need to get to where we have 10 of those guys. {The fact that we don’t clearly frustrates him.} “We can’t live with a lack of effort.” They need to live up to my expectations.
Matt suggested that ‘indecisiveness’ was a factor, especially with Bell and Moore. AA: “Moore…is a freshman. Chris has moved up on the defensive’s priority. [If he wants a career at the next level, he can be so easily taken out of a game. JJ Starling moved up, too.] “He has to move a little more. We’ve got to screen a bit more.”
JJ Starling, Chance Westry and Naheem McCloud: “JJ is doing a little bit more. He will hopefully be back soon. He’s been able to see the game a bit more, sitting on the sidelines.” About Westry and McCloud. “There’s only so many minutes and certain situations when I can use them.”
At the restaurant, Al Tucker wondered if we’ll see any more line-up changes. Coach provided this specific information: “We’re trying to figure things out, the prepare and evaluation, to get things going in the right areas.” [Got that, Al?]
What did he learn from Coach Boeheim? “To think positive and do what’s best for the team.” {You could see him doing that in his press conferences.] “It’s consistency of approach. As you go through the rough patches, keep the team’s spirit up. I wish we won every game but that’s not how it works. Keep playing and push to get better. Don’t get ahead of yourself: keep trying to improve.”
Florida State: It’s been two weeks since their last game. Matt wanted to know how much difference that might make but got no answer. AA: “They are long and athletic. All these guys can move and are disruptive. This is a typical Leonard Hamilton team.” Matt noted that FSU’s Jamir Watkins had scored 27 on up last year. AA: He plays downhill.”
A final word from the coach: “Hoping it will happen doesn’t get it done.”
