Coach Autry’s radio show is on Thursdays, (Wednesdays until the Dino Babers Show ends) from 7-8:30PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show is at Carrabba's Italian Grill at 550 Towne Drive, Fayetteville, NY. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. They are again doing a third half hour segment on Twitch: I think I will save myself some time by posting the main show and linking the Twitch segment the next day when it shows up on You-Tube.
Their schedule: AmeriCU Adrian Autry Radio Show Starts Nov. 14 - Syracuse University Athletics
You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
Submit a Question! - Syracuse University Athletics The choice, finally is the “Adrian Autry Show” or the “Fran Brown Show”!
Or on Twitter at x.com or Twitter (@CuseLearfield) using the hashtag #AskAutry.
The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometimes simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: TuneIn | Free Internet Radio | Live News, Sports, Music, Audiobooks, and Podcasts If not, try: https://cuse.com/watch?Live=6575&type=Live
MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
Coach, I know you and your staff have been working you tails off assembling this year’s and future year’s rosters in an environment that makes that much more difficult than it ever used to be and I’d like to tell you how much Syracuse fans respect you for the job you’ve done.
But we beat Le Moyne by 4 points who lost to Cal State Northridge by 22. Then we beat Colgate by 2 points who lost to Drexel by 17 points. We used to be great rivals with Connecticut, who just beat Le Moyne by 41. They’ve won two straight national titles and we haven’t made the tournament in three years. How can we close the gap here?
The Twitch Segment:
Last year you redshirted a player who then left. Is there any point in preserving eligibility years in an era where you don’t know that the player will still be with your team when he gets to use that eligibility year?
COACH AUTRY
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. The quotes may not be verbatim –they are from my scribbled notes. I have not knowingly changed the meaning.)
The answers to my questions:
Q1 – Coach said that this was “a really good question. We are closing the gap. You need to get really high level talent, play consistently, have some luck and retain players, which Connecticut has done really well. Then it’s getting them to jell quickly. This group has not played well on either end of the court. Once we get going you’ll see that the first couple of games are an outlier. [They had better be.] These were big games for Le Moyne and Colgate. Colgate’s been to 5 of the last 6 NCAA tournaments. Last year, they were bigger than we were. It’s tough to gauge teams early on. Everyone will have to improve. This is not who we are.” TL: “Colgate made some tough shots. This is their Super Bowl. They and Le Moyne aren’t afraid of the bright lights of the Dome.” AA: “Matt Langel does a great job there. But I’ve got to give our guys some credit for winning when not playing well. No one was rattled. (Winning these games) will pay off, moving forward…We haven’t clicked yet. Fans want it. We want it as well. It’s a process. You can’t worry about Ken Pom two games in. You’ve got to get wins.”
Q2 – There was no Twitch Segment, so I never got to ask this one. I’ll put it in my back pocket for a future program.
The show was delayed for 11 minutes by technical difficulties. I got the impression that Tim Leonard, (Matt Park is in California with the FB team), and the Coach had already been talking when they finally came through. TL: “Chris Bell sure opened the second half with a score. I think he got 80% of his points in the second half.” [Actually 100%) AA: “We’ve got to get him going in the first half. He’s getting some easy rim twos, doing more with the ball. Eddie can facilitate. This is a good team for Chris to be on. He can get some screens and some passes.”
Later Tim referred to Donny Freeman as “a freshman outlier. Most of the players are upper classmen.”
Stefan from Utica asked the coach what we need to improve on. AA: “Defense. We can’t allow 18-20 transition points. We’re not finishing around the rim. We want to push the tempo and set up spot up threes. Our half court defense improved from the first game. But you couldn’t see it because of the transition. We are going to the glass. We made a commitment to being a better rebounding team. Eddie, Johnny, [Donny?] and Jyare are all good rebounders. I’d like to win every game by 10-20 points but that’s not how it works in athletic - or in life.”
“Lucas Taylor is a really good defensive player at multiple positions but you have to find the right moment. You have to have Chris in there. Lucas is a better shooter than he’s shown.”
Nolan in Syracuse wanted to know why Eddie Lampkin didn’t play more in the Le Moyne game. AA: “He had two fouls. We didn’t want Nate Fouts to get loose on threes. We don’t want to trade twos for threes. We needed smaller and quicker guys. It’s tough for Naheem, too. He’s in tip-top shape. Youngstown has a 7-3 guy who is one of the top shot-blockers. He’s athletic and they push the pace. He’s a skilled center. We were in a battle. We have to take better shots. We took bad shots when we were up 13 vs. Colgate. The new guys had to do what we needed to do those situations. It’s very hard to play more than 10-11 guys. We try to get to 9 or 10. Elijah didn’t play much in the first game but he gave us a huge lift in the second game. We’ve got our core guys: Bell, Eddie, Donnie, JJ, Jayre, DaQuan. We had 19 assists, 15 in the first game. I want guys sharing the ball. Everybody by committee. We are so much better than our offensive numbers. We’ve got to get better on defense.”
Michael In Manlius tried to ask a question that didn’t come out quite right. He referred to some statement Coach had made last year about what he wants players to do when things break down – to keep spacing but be able to improvise. He wanted to know what impact that had on our defense. Finally, he said “Does that have any perks”. That left the coach to construct a question he could answer. “Bad spacing can put a defense at a disadvantage. People are used to seeing the 4 and the 5 around the basket. But we have them up to initiate the offense. They have to spring back to set up the defense.”
To change the subject, Tom pointed out that we play games at SMU< Stanford and California this year but don’t play in North Carolina. Isn’t that strange? Yes, it is.
Chris in Syracuse asked about Chance Westry’s status. AA; “He’s well. He had a couple of set backs. He’s recovered and practicing. He ahs to get back in shape. He’s ready…he’s close. He getting ready to go. I don’t want to put him out there if he’s not ready.” [Got it?]
