The all-inclusive Rutgers dumpster fire thread...

No, I disagree, calling Rutgers a rival gives Rutgers a level of respect that they never actually earned. Perhaps our own insecurity is the reason they are disdained. I get that given the years we’ve suffered. But rival is not something they’ve ever earned the respect of being labeled. Because Schiano complained about our turf and then won a few games at the end of the Big East? Nah.

nailed it GIF

Temple? Temple didn’t act like their one or two years of semi-relevance were equivalent to 100 years of being an Eastern power. No, I disagree, calling Rutgers a rival gives Rutgers a level of respect that they never actually earned. Perhaps our own insecurity is the reason they are disdained. They’re not a rival only because we don’t play them every year.

If we did, they would check all the boxes.

I will respectfully correct you. Rutgers is not a rivalry. They are beneath us. They were never our peer. They beat us a few times during the depths of our despair. That’s it. They padded their schedule with easy wins to achieve mediocrity. They celebrate mediocrity. We strive for greatness that they’ve never tasted. I think disdain is the word, not rivalry. West Virginia is a rivalry. There is a level of achievement and respect there for the foe that West Virginia used to be. Rutgers? Disdain for a wanna be team that’s never actually done anything. No respect is deserved, none should be given. None. No respect. No rivalry.
So what would you call them then? Because they certainly aren’t just another program to Syracuse. When we do play them, it’s hostile. If they have success (see what I did there), it makes Syracuse recruiting a bit tougher in the northeast. When they are failing, it makes Syracuse recruiting in the northeast a bit easier. I think from a home turf perspective, our goal is to be at the level or eventually better than Penn State. We got to comfortably clear Rutgers, UConn, Pittsburgh, and Boston College first. If we can ever get to a level where we are recruiting at Penn State levels in the northeast mixed in with Fran Brown and staff ability to get talented players out Florida and Texas. We will have the talent to compete at all levels.
