Either Urban Meyer is really good friends with Shady or he was paid very well for his comments.

For Raritan Red In Tin Cans (I’m not sure we should insult real knights of old) they must have coaching, players, money to pay said coaches and players, fans that actually care, and add more debt to the more than half-BILLION dollar debt they admit they owe.

I am not so convinced as Mr. Meyer.

They used to be the Queensmen and then the Chanticleers. Kinda cool.

They really know how to crap the bed. They changed the name to Scarlet Knights in the 50s...

I know this is the bash Rutgers thread but the way things are going on hoops-land other forums may have the all-inclusive cuse hoops dumpster fire thread

They have won the last three national championships with three different teams….the BIG is now the top dog.
And it never happened before Rutgers joined. Is that where you're headed with this?

Then RU would be in violation if that were enforced. Our stadium bond is a hit to the athletic department. All athletic scholarships at RU are recorded as out of state tuition (even for in state recruits) which makes no sense.
Do you think PSU's athletic revenues were enough to offset the 500 million they are spend in renovations? BTW, UMich is also spending a fortune on stadium renovations. Also there is no financial date for private schools (Northwestern) and the military academies, all of which would fit that AUP that you posted.

Recording all athletic scholarships as out-of-state tuition is fairly standard. I have no idea why.

But assuming you’re correct and other accounting strategies are driving the huge reported losses - that means Rutgers athletics was doomed from moment they jumped to the Big Ten. There were questions if this was going to be a money-losing decision - and their accounting guaranteed it would be since facilities upgrades were required as part of the move. While you seem to be looking at this as a reason to not be concerned - you should be very concerned. There’s no realistic way for Rutgers to ever stop bleeding red from the AD - that means any short term success will be accompanied by articles showing how Rutgers AD is still losing millions. That’ll make sustained success nearly impossible.

Spot on.

Fundamentally, any business operation must not spend more than they bring in over time. The concept is easy. The application is difficult because decision makers fail to remove human emotion from the equation. Some go so far as to justify losses on other bases to cover the emotional side of the decision.

Claiming that the AD is a "cost of doing business" to recruit students is a viable basis, but once the cost exceeds the net draw of new students, viability is lost and the basis is destroyed. Compare ND v. Rutgers. ND manages their AD and uses their sports, especially football, to recruit new students from across the nation. Rutgers' AD has apparently little management oversight and does not bring in new students, nor any other new revenue sufficient to cover the costs/expenses of the AD. All private schools and some state schools manage their ADs well.

Congress should legislate that state schools must operate within their AD revenue over time. There will be years when there will be deficits, but there should be years when there is net gain. Over time the break even point must be attained or lean to net revenue.

P.S. I did not use SU as the example as my point is not SU v. Rutgers. SU parallels NDs principles. SU generally pays into SU more often than running in the red.

Syracuse football has a record of 69-89 since this thread began.
