When i was there they had a good intramural rugby team, it would close going into the fourth qtr.

LIU sharks? Where is that High-school located?

The real story - LIU's original campus in Brooklyn (the Blackbirds) was always D-1, but didn't play football. Their Brookville (Nassau County) campus C. W. Post College (the Pioneers) played D-2 football (and won 3 D-2 championships in lacrosse). Recently they decided to elevate all their sports to D-1 (FCS football) and combine the teams in Brooklyn with the teams in Brookville.
