Here's a couple of amazing stats.

1. We have played 12 games so far this year and in half of them a non starter has been our leading scorer. Joseph, our designated star has been tops in four, with Triche and Southerland the other two. Please note that Kris has been on the floor 34% longer than Dion.

I wondered if anything like this has ever happened before, so I went back and checked the last 30 years. This is what I found.

In nearly half those years, it didn't happen even once. Our starters did all the big scoring. It has been done once in a season by 9 players and twice by the same player 8 times. Only once before has a player done it more than two times. That was when Devo was a naughty boy his Sr. year (2006-07). JB took him out of the starting line-up and he proceeded to be our top scorer off the bench 4 times. JB then put him back in as a starter.

Dion has now done it 6 times and we have completed a little more than one third of the season. Nobody in 30 years has come close.

2. The other amazing stat involves our championship team. A freshman came off the bench and outscored Carmelo, Warrick, GMac and all the rest - not once but twice. This did not happen against the cup-cakes, but agaist Notre Dame in February and in the NCAA tournament itself. I must be kidding right?. Absolutely not.

I guess the point you are making is depth- this sqaud is clearly our deepest in the JB era. There have been Dion-like scorers off the bench before but Dion, to my recall, is clearly the most explosive. Just two years ago it was Kris. He and Scoop were part of the 7 starters we had. Dion and CJ are in that kinda role this year with MCW, James, and Kieta having their moments but all a step behind so far. Edelin was a great talent and really provided quality play- too bad how it all went south for him. It's nice that Dion was able to adjust to the reality of the situation- otherwise we might have been making comparisons to Billy...who by the way, really got things going here- I believe Carmelo came aboard after Billy committed.

Carl Meo he just missed a space! Surely you remember Carl . . . .

That Edelin game vs. ND was a thing of beauty. He was absolutely dominant.

Ah, but there have not been Dion-like scorers off the bench before. That's why the stat is so amazing.

I was of the same opinion as you before I ran the numbers. For over 30 years (and until the last couple of years) JB has settled in to a 7.5 rotation when the BE began. So surely lots of #6, #7 - and even the so called ½ men - must have racked up big numbers. I was almost certain that is how the numbers would come out. However, the data proves this notion wrong. The top scorers have amost entirely been confined to the starting 5 over that long span. The only exceptions have been noted.
