oktober timekill.

" Boeheim might be most impressed with Battle's ability to guard people. He described the freshman from New Jersey as "very good defensively." Battle's knack for anticipating plays, combined with his on-ball defense caused Boeheim to praise that aspect of his game..."

OK . so name your 5 syracuse all time best defensive guards. GO !
(spoiler alert : trevor cooney didn't make my list)

Saw this quote in yesterday's article and immediately got flashbacks of MCW. Hope Battle can be that good for us on the defensive end. Man, MCW had such a knack for anticipating passes, and I loved how he would sometimes surprise the opposition on the inbounds pass after we scored and make the quick steal for another bucket.

I didn't start watching until 2000, so...

MCW, Rautins, Triche, Pace, Duany.

Also, anyone who says Flynn needs their glasses checked. He and Devo were probably the worst defensive backcourt of the past 15 years.

Triche and Rautins on the 2009-2010 "Steal and Deal" team throttling ranked Cal and UNC teams in the MSG tournament -- those were my favorite defensive moments (other than the Hak block, of course).-VBOF

Jason Hart, Andy Rautins, Michael Carter Williams, Brandon Triche, Kueth Duany

Hart, Andy Rautins, MCW , Brandon Triche, and Duany but what about Z Sims as a possibility also? My memory might be faulty but wasn't he pretty solid defensively his senior year?

Honestly, Hart is a little before my time. I was a fan, but I didn't really know what I was watching. So, based on what I've seen and not on reputation, I'd rank our guards defensively since 2003
MCW
Rautins
Gbinije
Triche
Cooney
Duany
Edelin
GMac
Wright
McCroskey
Devo
Flynn
Waiters
I think of them mostly as forwards, but as guards I guess I'd put Harris & Pace between GMac and Wright

In addition to Battle, I think Frank Howard will end up being worthy of mention in the top half or better when all is said and done.

Yeah, Flynn was usually only good when we played man. I remember him really pressuring and bothering Sherron Collins when we came back and beat Kansas.

But he used to drive me crazy with his weak contests of shots in the zone.

Yep, Self had to take Collins out of the game at one point because Flynn forced him into turnovers 3 possessions in a row before he was even able to initiate the half court offense.

Yep like this list v much and Triche as 5b

Triche would be a perfect defensive backcourt mate for any of these guys. He wasn't the most spectacular but he was always in position, often in such great position that the other guard didn't have to worry about playing passing lanes or over extending.

i'd put jason hart at the top. originally coerced into coming here he logged a ton of minutes and waged some epic battles against BE guards like felippe lopez, shaheen holloway and god shamgod. #2 would be michael carter williams. his size and reach and rebounding prowess made him a menace out top of the zone. third i'd go with eddie moss. "fast eddie" was a pick and fast break machine. 4th i'd go with lawrence moten. although technically a "swing " (like duany) i consider him more as a backcourt guy. a former db (he roomed with graves) he was strong, lanky and had a knack for anticipating and jumping passing lanes. lastly i'll list the forgotten guy james thues. thrust into a starting role he wasn't really prepared for and logging major minutes the kid never seemed to tire all game. he nabbed 101 steals his last season before transferring. second only to MCW.

Interesting, I remember Waiters being pretty darn good, and especially good at getting steals.

He had great upper body strength. That allowed him to cut off the drive without reaching and fouling a lot of the time.

Hart
MCW
Gbinije
Moss
Rautins

Tough decision between Rautins and Triche for #5.
