The biggest consequence from that USF loss

There are a lot of you guys, including Jeremy, that have suffered every season for a generation and have justified criticisms of the program. Jeremy is on my top 10 of dedicated fans. However, we need a dynamic of civil debate where various perspectives can be respectfully offered and received. I truly get Jeremy's viewpoint and feel positive perspectives need to be offered as well, as realism soon becomes a humorous pessimism. Our woes at times take on a tragic humor...
Jeremy is way better than me. I am being honest. I just don't like Cusian calling him out when what he said isn't true. Cusian is the top 1% of optimists which is fine but don't like how it develops into narratives. Nobody wants to lose but we have been mediocre or bad since 2002. That is frustrating and lessens patience for me. I just want to see improvements.

No one has mentioned that USF wanted this game much more than us.. they desperately needed a win..it was at home and they were hyped up to win one for their fallen player who had died... college fb is such a game of emotion and USF had a ton on their side ...

Ugh! If that indeed was the case, it speaks volumes for the team and its coaching staff... :( Being mediocre at best the past several years, we should never want any game less than our opponent. I mean, aren't our guys (you know, the lower ranked types and all we get) supposed to be playing with chips on their shoulders. ;)

You are wrong to go after Jeremy. He is diehard thru and thru. Way better fan than me and you and I have had a lot of clashes.
People are frustrated Cusian. I have kept my word but don't call this guy a pessimist when he is the definition of a realist.

I'm not going after him. I'm not questioning his fandom (though that may have read that way). Anyone can share their opinion and do.

I was questioning why his volume of posts go up after a loss.

Why on earth would it be bad for positive things to become narratives? I hate the "I've been dumped so many times I can't talk to girls anymore" attitude around here. So we've been bad to mediocre for a long time. So what? What does that have to do with UVa?

And you say I'm in the 1% of optimists, but that's short changing my ability to be objective about past performance (which you know I am). I always believe in and hope for the best. I carry no expectations outside of effort. And I hate to lose. If we lose a lot, I hope we hire someone who can help us win. But until Shafer (or whomever) is removed as coach, I will hope for the best for them and the staff.

Grob tested my optimism in a major way - and this staff is not even 1/10th of the way there.

Alsacs I appreciate the kind words but honestly were all the same on here or at least 99% of us are. We all want a competitive program that can make a bowl game most years and have a couple years every decade where they challenge for more. There were some flaws exposed on Saturday that have me concerned about where this season is possibly headed. I've seen this movie before to many times and I'm hoping for better. Hopefully the team does a 180 Saturday and we get back on track.

I think it's just as fair for some to say; this was a one game performance and it hopefully doesn't mean we aren't as good as we thought, as it is for people to question whether we over valued how good we were, especially after LSU and there are some real legitimate concerns about the coaching.

We lack at least some of the discussion this board was known for when I first joined it, way back on a different site. I hope we can get back to the ability to bounce ideas from both perspectives as opposed to constantly attacking one viewpoint or another. I've been guilty of this myself.

People are sick and tired of the one step forward three steps back treadmill this program is stuck on. Every single time I start to believe we are actually moving forward we get a deflating performance like this. I would have traded a 35 point loss to LSU for a win last Sat. The lack of consistency from one week to the next is damning.

We have a big bunch of kids. They will be erratic. That is it in a nutshell. My guess is that they will show up big time this week.

Agree we have a great bunch of young men and with it comes erratic play. That said it is so hard to see this team, as some other/s said, take steps forward and then to have it unravel. Worries exist in that these young men did not seem overly motivated to start the game, a time I think we could have set the tone. Secondly, that HCSS had to point it out on his way to the locker room in the interview before halftime, I think he said something to the effect that we need to get some kids going-or maybe he said "excited." Thirdly I have concerns that one play, bone head dead ball foul, seemingly turned this defense completely off. Need to pick up your teammate, let him learn and not burn a chance at a win.
Virginia and now Pitt become huge. I feel they are both must wins. Moral victories no longer count this season. If we truly are to take step/s forward we need to get a bowl game, win it if it means a better than five hundred record so we can use history of stepping forward for recruits. As it is getting old for fans I have to imagine it is getting old for recruits on the beaten paths of recruiting if we don't start to put up.

UVA needs this game as badly as we do if not more and just as badly as USF did. We better be ready this week. We sure as hell weren't last week
