So I was thinking about the blocked punt. Slow football day.

My first thought was " we don't need it, why show the overload to future opponents". I don't think Dino has ever tried to block one. Seems like we could have saved it if we thought we had something.

After more consideration, two other thougts
1) maybe he wanted to build confidence in the punt block team?
2) maybe it was a flaw they saw in the Wagner film, no future value, just a Wagner weakness?

And my special bonus thought:
They did it on purpose to show FSU something and they used it to set up a special
variation to use next week!

I initially wondered the same thing. Had to be about getting it on film just so other teams have to think we might rush the punter at any time. Even if it forces the blockers to stay in for a split second longer going forward that is a win.

One advantage is now FSU might be in protection mode thus freeing up Cordy for a punt return. One thing I'm really hoping for is that the special team coach saw a weakness and hit it hard and will continue to recognize that as often as possible for the rest of the year. Add to that, just better athletes each year to be able to do this and let em know this punt return team has multiple ways of attacking, this is a very good thing.

I don’t know. I do know our special teams put in work again this week. They went from average to strength in the offseason.

Remember, VT blocked a punt against FSU last week in a similar situation.
Yup, gives Taggert one more threat to think about, and maybe Babers is just a lot more confident in the units he has on special teams this season.

I don't even know if Babers wanted us to block the kick, or if it was just the players that wanted to block the kick. After the block happened, he clearly felt bad for the kicker and told them to lay off the pressure since we got to him not once, but TWICE.

Seems like Dino's MO is just gimme the ball back. He doesn't want to see any fakes or any roughing the kicker penalties. I actually think our normal punt rush is too soft and conservative. Sending just a couple guys is fine, but they still have to push just to give the punter a reason to punt it. Every second he holds on to it, gives more time for his gunners to get downfield.

It’s going to be game planned, so that won’t necessarily be applicable for FSU depending on their punt unit.

I talked to Wagner’s Punt Team Coach last night, two things happened.

1) Blocker picked someone up he’d never been taught to, mental mistake.

2) they never accounted for Riley bc they never expected him to be block man.

These type of things are schemed up on an individual week basis, so don’t worry about showing something.

Great play!

Sometimes you have to take what the opposition gives you

Blocking punts has to be situational right? - for instance, in a game where you have the lead do you risk attempting a block and running into the kicker? Late in a game where you're down I imagine attempting a block is back on the table, the reward is worth the risk of a running into the kicker penalty. And when you are running away with the game early in the season you just want the practice. Is that right?

We need scores from the defense and special teams, both actually scored and set up. We haven't been getting them them for a few years but now they are coming.
