Fishes and Loaves

Just my opinion D line and linebacker are my biggest worries at this point.
Most of our needs are on that side, no question. Some OL upgrades would be nice and if Kyle isn’t back, I am sorry but we need an established starter. We can’t go into next year with a roster full of QBs who have not taken a single meaningful snap

Safety is a major concern on defense and replacing Diggs at DE. We lose veteran LB’s but McDonald played most of this season and Grant could move into the Barron spot.

McDonald and Grant is not up to the level of LB talent we need in our new world of Fran Ball.
There is a reason McDonald lost his starting job to a safety.

He ain’t playing next year. I doubt he ever takes a snap at Qb.
Neither is Carney who already has said he is redshirting … soooo not sure what to tell you. The difference is nothing wrt Belin has been stated one way or another.

The only reason why I added Carney was because I thought he was enrolled early and so he would be involved in the spring and S&C. If McCord doesn't return, who knows what happens as pretty much everyone is unproven in that scenario. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

I do not think Carney starts next year either but I would not give up on him. I thought he said if McCord came back he would like to redshirt and learn under McCord, but if McCord went to nfl he would compete for qb 1. If McCord does not come back you have the lsu transfer. Only been a backup. There has been a lot of comments that he throws a good ball but no idea how reads D and goes through progressions. Similar to JW. Johnson also has very little experience as a passer, more wildcat.
Would not be surprised if McCord does not come back Fran looks for an experienced qb to hand over the keys. Otherwise we have really have know idea who ends up qb 1 going into the season. We will have to see how it all shakes out but if McCord does not come back I do not think we can say any of the qbs currently on the roster have a big lead on the others.

There will be guys who lose jobs after spring ball and will look to transfer. I highly doubt the QB room in July looks like it does now.

We need to account for walkons who will be part of the tens in 2025. The 105 limit is a roster limit, not a scholarship limit.
Guys like Kubala, Masters, Stangle and/or Zuhr, Oh and/or Kennedy, the PWO QBs all should get consideration along with several others.

123 has to be trimmed to 105 by next August.

I am wondering if the ncaa will adjust the 105 for current walkons but require any new players to count against the 105. That way players that are not on scholarship are not forced to leave school or stop playing.

Something that hasn’t been talked about yet is that players can now receive fractional scholarships. So a walk on could receive a quarter scholarship. This is what Olympic sports have always had in the NCAA

Doesn't sound like it. I've read a few articles about some tough conversations with walk-ons at various schools that they need to find other opportunities if they want to play.

This is a good point. Coach Brown took time to mention Kubala and Masters in his post game speech at the trophy presentation when he was talking about the team culture and leaders.

And OX did not include Zuhr in his list of returning scholarship players (sorry orangemass). Which makes sense as to date, he hasn’t been on scholarship. But some long snapper is going to get a scholarship. Presuamly it will be Stangle or Zuhr.

If you reserve space for just these players, any room for additional players from the portal is going to need to come from players already on the roster leaving.

My guess is we’re going to add four or five more and can expect four or five more to leave.

Just as an aside, props to Coach Brown for what he did with the walk ons for the bowl game.

I think he realized for many, this was their last go around as walk ons. He made sure they all made the trip and when the game got out of hand, he made sure to get some of them in the game. We had a walk on covering the guy that scored a touchdown for Washington State on that last drive they had. And it was a walk on Kyle flipped the ball to after he took a knee in the victory formation on the final play of the game. Just so that kid could get a little air time on TV.

Classy move.

The kid who McCord flipped to, did a backflip as well. Great memory for him.
