Let’s hear it. I’ve seen various posts coming to his defense so let’s get it organized. Why should SU give Red another year and not look elsewhere. To what do we owe Red as a coach ( not as an alum or former player)?

Also let’s please keep this to the reasons for keeping him. So far the responses have been poking holes in the reasons to fire him so let’s get the other side if anyone has a sound answer. If it’s 2 responses and silence then that speaks louder than any need to clutter with rebuttals repeating what’s in every other thread. I’ll put full disclosure I see no reason he should stay but I won’t interrupt to the point of the thread.

Because SU doesn’t care about athletics, making money or its fans?

Because, for SU, we will never get as close to having a Coach “Orange” as we will with Coach “Red."

(And arguments like that are why I didn’t pursue a career in law!)

Let’s give those like Dr Bill a chance to sing their song.
Good thread. I'll sit back and let others post since I'm in favor of a new coach, but to kick it off I've seen people post the following reasons:
  • in-game coaching doesn't matter,
  • Red's a good recruiter,
  • Red's an alumni,
  • fault is on the players not Red (people have referenced foul shooting, turnovers, etc.)
  • the players just aren't listening,
  • NIL, and
  • Cooley threw a water bottle.

There is very little reason the keep Red at this point. IF it was decided to keep him it wold be under the understanding that the assistants must go. At a minimum those who have been with the program through JB's decline must go as there has been no noticeable benefits of having them on staff. And I understand that also includes Autry but if you are arguing to retain him, this would be the minimum. At this point I would rather see an entire new staff, as 10 years of mediocrity with this staff is more than enough.

I thought you were pre med?
Well, yeah…graduated Upstate in 1993, so I’m more like, post-med. I was pointing out that I was no good at trying to convince others in an adversarial setting. So, I went to school to actually know what I was talking about. (Some might say I came up short there, too:confused:)

The only thing I got is Red is leaning on the job… the D is markedly improve from previous years in terms of sophistication and results. But even that is deceiving because the improvement is based on effort and talent. The scheme changes are relatively minor and there is still an issue that once they get past the initial defender the help schemes are a mess.

That’s all I got. It was pretty clear from the jump that offense would be a huge problem for this squad. If I can see this from watching on tv for 30 minutes or so while doom scrolling and working at the same time, it’s really really disappointing and disturbing that our coaching staff getting paid millions apparently can’t see the same and so something about it half way through the season.

There is no recruiting class for next year to save.

Anthony is presumably here next year no matter what. Freeman is gonzo I guess? Other then Kyle I don’t really care if they keep any of the rest during portal time and keeping red won’t really impact that.

That’s it… that’s all I got. I’ve never seen such an open and shut case for firing a coach.

I Think we all know what meaningful games in March means. Only reason he didn’t say tournament or bust because ADs have to give themselves an out for acts of god like a pile up of freak injuries.

February was always going to determine this team’s fate. I think history in the ACC tells us we should have expected to lose at least one game we shouldn’t (NC State lost at home to GT yesterday and UNC lost to Cal).

All yesterday did was make it significantly more difficult to make the tournament, which determines the season.

We played good D at the beginning of the season. Lately including yesterday it’s been trending in the wrong direction.

But even early season it was predicated on “level 5” effort. The scheme is still pretty naive beyond the first man. There were signs… like mixing in zone to protect Anthony. But still way too little for a 3rd year head coach.

Truly trying to think of pros of keeping Red, but really can’t. I’d imagine other coaches are using him against us in recruiting at this point as well.

Because for whatever reason those at Universities will get paid anyways despite horrible decisions and poor allocation of resources.
