“Coach, I’ve been an SU football fan since Ernie Davis was in our backfield. We’ve had 8 previous coaches during that time and they all lost games like that one. I recall Ben Schwartzwalder going out to play California in 1968 with a 10th ranked team to play 11th ranked Cal. We turned the ball over 9 times and the game ended 0-43, 7 minutes early because the Cal fans rushed the field after a Pick 6 and Ben agreed the game ought to end at that point. That team won its next game 47-0. I also remember the last time we were down 0-31 at halftime: it was the 1999 game at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, the second half of that game by the same score for a total of 0-62. That team had been ranked #16. They lost 4 of their last 5 games. Those were our two winningest coaches, Ben and Paul Pasqualoni. Your team was down 0-31 and won the second half 13-10, a good sign.
How long does it take a team to get over a game like that, get it’s full confidence back and focus fully on its next opponent?”
For the twitch segment:
“We seem to lack balance. We have a hard time running the ball but pass it well. But our passes are mostly short or intermediate passes. Zeed Haynes was supposed to be our deep threat. So we have anyone who could do for us what he was going to do? Can we protect the quarterback well enough to throw deep?”
The Show
(Since both the show and the Twitch segment were available the same evening the first time out this year, as long as that’s the case, I’m going to just focus on the highlights, including the answers to my questions. I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
First the answers to my questions:
Q1- “Just practice, address the issue, understand it, flush it in practice. It might take some film to analyze it.” Later he said “We flushed the loss earlier, (due to the two extra days since the game was on Thursday). We watched everybody else play [Watching Navy fumble 5 times in a blow-out loss to Notre Dame must have sent home the messages that games like that happen to everybody.] Being able to go home. [Helps]”
I devised the long lead-in to convince the coach ghat I was a long-time SU fan who supports the program and wasn’t trying to use my questions to criticize him. I’ve congratulated him on every victory this season and viewed this loss in the context of history. I hope it works.
Q2 – “We just got to see this weekend to see what happens. We have to get off the line of scrimmage and go. Hold that quibble and we’ll see what happens.”
Unfortunately I’m still getting ‘answers’ like this. This was the same response he gave to my quest to compare the 3 protector punt formation to the 2 he prefers. When I asked why our productive passing attack didn’t set up the sunning attack for success, (Today Coach Brown said about falling behind early: “You don’t abandon the run. The run can open up the pass and the pass can set up the run.”) His response was “I can’t tell when the other team will do the run blitz. I don’t call their plays”. Then there was the time I was asking if, in a double team, the extra defender would be on the out of the receiver or would he join the cornerback on the inside, as Brent Axe had suggested. His response was that he didn’t feel like talking about that play anymore. [This was the next show after the Stanford game.] This defensive attitude is preventing him from answering the questions.
Matt attempted to explore the issue of the first question a bit further, as he often does. He wanted to know how difficult it is for the players to take instruction after a game like that. Coach, in an earlier interview, had told him that players need to “build up callouses off of feedback”. He added “People appreciate honesty. You have to listen to the message, not the way it’s delivered. Don’t worry about tone. Communicate back and forth. Just telling isn’t enough….(I have to) Look in the mirror first. Watch practices. See where you could have coached better, been harder of the coordinators. Get things fixed for the following week. When you win, mistakes are masked. When you lose, everyone wants to complain…We’re moving on but I have a scar. Guys keep talking about it. But it will be good to play another game.”
Matt asked about sideline adjustments. FB: “Just keep playing.” Then came the statement about no abandoning the run, which he said was only permissible in the fourth quarter. He actually asked Matt what he thought of the defense. Matt thought they had played well. Fran said they hadn’t played well enough because Pitt forced 5 turnovers and we had none, [thank you, refs].
Kathleen from Pompey asked when the coach had told Kyle McCord on the sidelines when things were going wrong. FB: “Just keep playing. You’ve been playing this game since you were a kid.”
They brought on offensive line coach Dale Williams. FB: “He ahs allowed our offensive line to become tougher. It’s been one of the bigger jumps on the team. They were really bad and now they are a lot better. There’s no BS with him. I’ve got no time for BS. We’re growing a good friendship. I like his family and what he stands for as a man. He’s similar to me but with different backgrounds. It’s a good mix. I hope we are here together until my daughter is old enough.” [For what?]
Willaims sees his job as “making the line better…coach ‘em hard better Don’t mess around. Do reps until they’re a habit. Go over what went wrong.” He’s trying to get both J’Onre Reed and Josh Ilaoa playing at a high level. “We want to put the 5 best guys out there to give us an opportunity to win.” Matt suggested that having Fadil Diggs to test them gives Williams plenty of information as to their progress. “These guys never quit”.

Coach Brown admitted that SU’s receivers struggled to get open against Pitt, who “did a great job shutting us down. Marcellus Barnes “did well. He’s had an up and down couple of days. We’ve got a lot of guys trying to come back, maybe split some time. Joe Cruz, Enrigue Cruz. We’re trying to have a job competition.” Davien Kerr is a “ballhawk” who will see time at corner.
He was asked about the search for a placekicker. “It’s an issue. Guys make it in practice. It’s annoying. I have to get more educated on it. Dave Jacobs wants to help. I posted that he kicked the game winning field goal in the last ever game at Archbold in 1978. FB: “I wasn’t born yet. I need to get some of that luck.
Kyle McCord said he’d never won a game with a Hail Mary pass? Has the coach ever thrown a successful Hail Mary? In high school he hit one with 6 seconds left to send a game against a rival into overtime and Camden won it in 6OTs. “It’s situational football.”
He went over the Va Tech line-up rapid fire, mostly referring only to their uniform numbers. He loves their secondary and they D-Line is good. Their 1-2 running punch of QB Kron Drones, (“a Sunday guy”) and RB Bhayshul Tuten are impressive. He also likes their tight end. [I hope we don’t wind up with tight ends as we watch the game.]
He still considers the national championship playoff “reachable. “We’ll play one game at a time. We’ll play Virginia Tech and see what happens…I want to put SU on the map. I want to win the national championship. I want my son to end up coaching here. I want it to be like the lacrosse coaches where they had two in 60 years.” [But how old will his daughter be?]
