The coach’s show is on TK99, (FM 99.5) in the Syracuse area and can also be heard through Orange All-Access on the SU Athletic website. This year it’s 7PM Thursdays- or two days before each game, when they are not on Saturday. They have a link to their “Radio Mailbox” for submitting E-Mail questions on the SU Athletic website. You also can call in questions at 1-888-746-2873 or locally at 315-424-8599. You can also tweet them at hash tag CDMS. The show is broadcast from the Red Robin in Fayetteville.

It can take a while but pod casts of the show are eventually posted here:

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

“Congratulations, coach on getting a big win and doing it by doing what you stressed in the practices leading up to the game- tackling. That was the best tackling I’ve seen from an SU team in along time and I hope we can keep it up the rest of the season.

Sean Hickey made a statement that he, at 287 pounds, would be the “shrimp” of the Pitt line if he played for them as their line averages 317 pounds per man. It brought to mind something said along time ago by Mick Tinglehoff, the center for the Minnesota Vikings, prior to Super Bowl IV. Mick was 237 pounds and was having to block 287 pound Buck Buchanan. He told the press that “we’re both big men. It’s about leverage and agility and aggressiveness.” Mick didn’t do too well. These are all big men these days. How much does size matter when the smaller guy is 287 pounds?”

COACH MARRONE

(I’ve re-arranged the order of some of the comments based on the subject. Also, I have decided to abbreviate “I have to do a better job“ as “IHTDABJ“- BJ means “better job”, nothing else- and “I have to put the players in a better position to succeed“ as “IHTPTPIABPTS“ because he says these things more than Bill Fuccillo says “It’s Huge!”)

Coach accepted congratulations on the win but said the thing is that you have to come back and prepare to win another game. IHTDABJ “I went to bed with a Yankee playoff game unfinished for the first time in my life last night. That will tell you how important this is.” Matt told him not to worry: Raul Ibanez took care of everything .

I called in my question. “It’s a big man’s game up front. But we’re not looking for players at Gold’s Gym. We need football players. Toughness, speed and leverage are important. When I see a 335 pound high school player I wonder how hard he’s had to work. Character and work ethic are important. I look for wrestlers. Wrestlers are different. You’re on your own. You can’t blame it on your teammates or the coach. I’ve seen wrestlers become great football players but I’ve never seen football players become great ’real’ wrestlers. We look at the frame and the shoulders and the hands to see what might have the chance to grow into. There is a point where size can be overwhelming: a 245 pound guy trying to block a 338 pound guy. I love tough guys. Brandon Sharpe had a great game in large part because in every practice he goes up against a guy we got away from Michigan named Kyle Knapp. He was the second best wrestler in the state. Brandon works against him every day. (Kyle Knapp is a 6-4 264 freshman whom we’ll no doubt hear from in future seasons. His size shows you don’t have to be a monster to play football well.)

Matt wanted to talk about tackling and how leverage can allow a smaller player to use a larger player’s weight against him. Coach: “We teach elbows in, thumbs up, the ‘take-off’, strength, body position and the finish. Players need to come off the ball, strike first and finish the play. I look at a lot of films of prospects but I want to see the game films. Finishing is the most important thing and the hardest to teach. I can teach a player to keep his elbows in but not to finish up.” Matt “Killer instinct.”

Matt hen went to what he called the “crayon questions”: those submitted by the patrons at Red Robin. One was about Doug’s “best coaching memory”. He chose “The looks on the player’s faces at the Pinstripe Bowl. A group of kids who had been through so much. A burden had been taken off their backs. If you’re not in it for the kids, you need to get in another profession. They’ve been working hard but you have to lead them to wins. IHTDABJ of that.”

Olivia in Jamesville wanted to know why SU is such a great fit for Coach Marrone. Surprisingly, he had no specific comment on Syracuse University. “You get to lead young men. You teach them a work ethic. You ask them: What are you going to do after football is over?” He mentioned the ESPN 30-30 segment on pro athletes who had gone broke. “What happened? Where did it happen? You can blame it on the family but some kids don’t have families. They only have coaches. If they are able to get away with things early, how do you expect them to learn things later?

Matt asked: “Can or will a university give a player a financial game plan?” Coach: “We have tried to do that before when I was here. Bad agents-and there are good and bad agents- will fill their heads with ideas. The NFL tries to help them. When I was at New Orleans we had a player named Jahri Evans. I kept reminding him that now that he’s coming into some money, he’s got to take care of his family. He came in driving an Cadillac Escalade and a I called him mother to make sure she knew about it and it was OK with her. Jahri asked me “You called my mother?” You have to look out for them. It gives them a better chance to make the right decision.”

Tracy in Jamesville asked “Who is your favorite player on the team? Coach said “The one who realizes his potential…. It’s like choosing who is your favorite son or daughter. I’ve been around some outstanding young men and professional players. Even in camp, when we had to release players because they just weren’t good enough to help us, I admired those who had played to their highest level of ability. I tell the players to do their best and they can hold their heads high regardless of any criticism.”

Matt noted that Ryan Nassib was a finalist for the “academic Heisman”- an Academic All-American. Coach said he had a dual major and a high GPA. “He’s a good leader for our team. We have had a lot of success stories like that. But people get tired of hearing them. They want to win. IHTDABJ.”

Matt asked about the offense and what is needed to get it going again. “We have to have multiple people win each play. IHTPTPIABPTS.”

He called the Rutgers team, “the best I have seen since I’ve been here.” He noted all the juniors and seniors on the two-deep. “The cupboard was certainly not bare. They are second in the country in rushing defense and 10th in interceptions. They are 11th in time of possession. The have made some big plays and are very aggressive in special teams. They have a very good back. At 5-8 200 pounds, he’s very hard to tackle- like a bowling ball. We had a lot of people around the Pitt backs. It’s easier to tackle in tighter space. If the defense keeps getting three and out you are going to get your opportunities. IHTPTPIABPTS.”

Matt got back to the subject of tackling. Has there been a decline in tackling in football?
Coach: “As a parent I get concerned. I have a son who wants to play football. You have to learn to do it the right way when young. All this 7 on 7 can hurt you. We’ve done a better job because we have consistently made it a point of emphasis with every phase of our defensive unit.” (They must be doing a good job because he didn’t say IHTDABJ.)

Frank in Olympia, Washington was all excited about the orange shoes and said that when we have orange facemasks, we’ll be all set. Coach: “I’m so oblivious to that. It’s what’s in the uniform. Whatever it takes to play well and win. I’m not stuck on anything. I get concerned when kids ask about shoes or jerseys. Don’t you just want to play football? But it’s what’s happening now.” Matt said “It’s another aspect of the so-called arms race in college football. Kids want to go play for the schools where they wear 16 different uniforms.” Coach: “I have a hard time with that. I would never pick a school because the uniforms. I’m trying to win and IHTDABJ of it.”

A caller praised the schedule the coach “had put together for the team”. (I wonder how much input the coach had and what he really thinks of it.) The caller wanted to know “Do you see us getting to a bowl? What has to happen?” Coach:
1) IHTDABJ
2) You can’t lose games. The things you do that lose the game are a direct reflection on me. (I guess that would be ADROM.) If you are minus 1 in turnovers you have only a 33% chance to win the game. If you are -3 it’s down to 9%. I’ve told the team that if it’s 0-0, (I think he means even) I like our chances. If I(can)DABJ of that, then we’ll win. Rutgers not only avoids turnovers but they force them. They do a good job of disguising coverages. They are very aggressive in special teams. They really kicked our butts in that area the last three years. IHTDABJ. I think we have a good plan. The players have to understand the plan and execute it. I am happy with the players. They have given us everything they have. IHTPTPIABPTS.” Matt suggested that a good example of IHTPTPIABPTS is using Lewellyn Coker, a defensive player who loves to hit in as a blocker on the goal line.

Back to the crayon questions, (this one was in two colors). The customer wanted to know what was Coach’s favorite game. Matt said he felt the could guess, (Nebraska?) but he was wrong. Coach said the favorite game he was ever involved in took place behind a drug store in New Orleans. He’s gone to pick up something and saw an unsupervised game between a bunch a kids in a vacant lot next to the parking lot. “I liked the joy in their faces. After that there are so many lessons. But the spirit was great.”

Olivia in Jamesville submitted another question: “How will the next game go?” Matt suggested she wanted not a prediction of the score but a description of the type of game it would be: a shoot out or a low-scoring, defensive duel like the Pitt game. Coach: the type of game I want is one in which we have at least one more point. This conference is very physical and doesn’t get enough credit for it. We were physical against Pitt and we must sustain it.”.

They ended with a injury report on Shamarko Thomas and Jeremiah Kobena. Coach: They are practicing. We are awaiting the word from the doctors. It will be a game time decision.
The next show will be next Wednesday as the Connecticut game is on Friday.

IHTDABJ.

I'm eventually going to read all of this, as I always do. But right from the start after seeing your abbreviations, I might have to wake up my wife first.

SWC I don't think YCDABJ. Awesome again
