The D got a few stops

Without that roughing call, the game takes on a very different feel. I'm not saying our defense is perfect but that one call, followed up by a great aggressive play by NC State, turned the game. Without it, I think we walk away with a 20+ point win and a relatively calm 4th quarter.

That play didn’t change the game. We got two more possessions after that happened and we went 3 and out and 5 and out. Then got the Fg,to end the half up 7.

Came out got a TD, went up by 14 points two different times in the second half. The roughing and ensuing nc state TD really became irrelevant.

the game did turn on a dime though with that play. say we take the punt and go 3 and out we have a 50/50 we put them right back inside the 10. if you have a dominate D then like VT used to have them i am all for it.. but when stops are tough i take them and run. you can complain about 3 and outs and give them away when you get them. just like the PI call killed another drive we had stopped. thats the diffense in winning by 17 and being in a 1 score game

It definitely changed the feel. We went from scoring on 4/5 drives (3 TDs) to going 1/3 (FG). Our defense also went from holding its own and getting a 3-0 (2 yard drive) to giving up 75 yards and a TD in 2 plays, and then being iffy most of the rest of the game.

Although the roughing the kicker play didn’t change the game’s Outcome, it did change the feel.

It didn’t need change the feel for me. What changed the feel of the game was not being able to stop them from scoring in the second half.

The went
Touchdown
Touchdown
Tocuhdown
Interception
Game over

How’d you feel in Q2 vs Q1?

UNC went from not scoring to scoring because of a punt return. big MO comes from almost anything doesnt have to be something your own team does.

I thought the LBs played pretty well. Sometimes the secondary WILL get overmatched. That was the case last night. Great QB, very good TE, and my god that WR is a monster. Hard to bring that guy down also. Their other WRs are good too. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Fortunately Dungey played a game for the ages (Rikey too!) and we got that last pressure on Finley. Fun game to watch. That team is good. If they had a good secondary then they would be VERY tough to stop, IMO. It’s impressive how good they are generally though considering how much talent they have been losing to the NFL lately. They have a beast of a MLB too.

"Roughing call"? That was 100% roughing the punter, 15 yard version. There wasn't much subjectively to the call. Totally dumb for us to go afrer the punt and not take the field position.

Not saying it wasn't the right call; I think you are reading too much into my comment. How about "when we roughed the punter." It absolutely was dumb to go after the punter and it cost us very quickly.

Played pretty well? I guess I was seeing something different. They looked good early and got the big stop at the end, but ncsu made d look pretty bad in between.

That’s a really good offense. The passing yds vs UNC are way more concerning.

But I’m honestly not real concerned.

The flow changed when we went from the 3 linebacker set we played most of the beginning to the 2 linebacker set. I know they wanted to stop the big pass plays with the extra coverage but we stopped putting pressure about the same time.

It is a good offense, but it was still their season high in points and total yards.

we need to make Wake throw so the DEs can get to the qb.
We need to put a hat on that QB everytime he even thinks about running. I know it's a different QB, but what they did to us in the second half at the Dome last year left a mark.

They got every call imaginable don't remember us getting one lucky break until Johnsons fumble out of bounds on one of our last drives. And a career game from their QB. Its OK that they kept it close. The D was very good early on letting us get the early lead and giving our offense a shot at blowing them out. They were also good on the penultimate drive at the end.

Inbetween they were shredded. But our offense really taxes our D and I think its more a factor of this than sucking. Its tough to play that many possessions.

The QB didn't miss a single throw everything was on the money and coverage was pretty good overall other than the couple times we blew the assignment and were beat deep easily.

That offense doesn't usually play like that they are usually far more methodical. Probably because they don't want to expose their D.

At one point in the late 3rd think our penalties were even. Def felt like we were losing the game but they hurt themself too. Insane...

Lost a lot when we lost the edge on D. Felt like we laid back and waited with no QB press.

If coaching staff sees something on special teams that we can exploit then we need to do it. The punt block was close but poorly executed. If we do it again in the game then maybe we are successful. It was one more thing for State to have to consider in their game management. It was an aggressive call which is a HCDB hallmark and I like it.

I dont think the D played poorly.. it have up deep balls to a good QB/WR combination because we were being aggressive.. much better than gashing holes to the running game and tons of first downs.

The Dline got decent pressure, that is the best oline in the league and while we didnt sack Finley much we did cause some badly timed throws
Not too mention they were holding like it was their job with no calls.

This was a bad game to have Fredrick hobbled, Scoop dinged up, etc.

And where was Trill? Did he not play?

In any event, Finley is a tough QB to face when you're not at full strength at CB.

The D fought hard and took a bunch of body blows and shots to the head but was standing at the end with Robinson on Finley thus forcing the ball to go to the sure handed Armstrong.

Trill played. I saw a highlight where he was the blitzer that chased Finley out of the pocket, almost fell down as he rolled to his right, but was able to keep persuit.
Of course - Finley still connected on a big pass play to Harmon, because he did that all flipping game.

Happened in the UNC game too iirc

Our safeties are young and still learning so they’re vulnerable to biting on fakes. They’re also trying to backstop blown gap coverage by LBs getting swallowed up or overrunning the play.

It’s a lot to ask of these youngins.

NC State executed a perfectly timed gadget play to their TE for one of their massive chunk gains.

Being strong up the middle of your lineup can mask many deficiencies. Slayton is fantastic in the middle of the DL. Unfortunately we’re not as strong at the next two levels (MLB, S).

NC State has one of the best centers & QB combos in college football. Harmon is an NFL talent so I’m not terribly concerned with the D’s performance.

I still prefer more traditional 4-3 sets than the nickel. Cordy’s 2 big plays in the 4th were the first I could remember for him. Glad he stepped up.

Watching Finley over the years I noticed how much he has improved his feet and his eyes meanwhile squaring well to the throw. Shows you don't have to be some wonderfully gifted fleet footed player if you work hard at your craft good things will happen. Thrilled to have him out of SU's life!
