Going into last years game with Rutgers our defensive stats were a lot better.

SU 2010 vs 2011

Total Defense #10 #88
Rush Def 31 49
Pass Def 15 106
Scoring Def 16 79
Pass Effic Def 23 91
1st Down Def 18 NA*
Red Zone Def 17 NA*

* Anyone know what our national rank in these two categories is this year?

Besides all the injuries the numbers above concern me.

pass d really brings down the average -- the rush defense is not as steep a decline

pass defense and 3rd down D are really really bad, just goes to show what the pass rush has done without chandler, a dinged up secondary and the loss of two solid albeit not spectacular senior corners will do. I know our young corners are bigger and suppose to be faster but when they are 75% and real young, it can be tough

I think it is safe to say, last year's defense was better than this year's.

I think we can absorb every single one of those drops in rank, IF WE CAN JUST CLEAN UP THE THIRD DOWNS.
I think a lot of us expected that the defense wouldn't be as strong as last year but hopefully they can improve at least that one stat. We also expected the offense to be better than last year and it's had a number of bright spots, i.e. Nassib, West, Bailey, Provo, but the offense needs to play well and improve their 3rd down pct. as well. I hope the coaches have a good game plan for this week.
