Coach Babers’s Show will be at the new Marriott Syracuse, (the former Hotel Syracuse). The first show will be Wednesday night at 7PM because the game is Friday, (the show will normally be two days before the next game). They will be in Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub, which can be accessed from the street.

You can (or could last year, anyway), listen to a podcast of the show, probably the next day, at: Search results for babers | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn
I’ve been asked to continue doing the summaries, even by people who listen to the podcasts. I may focus on the major points, rather than trying to record everything.
My Question(s)
“Coach, Florida State seems to have lost confidence. We need to jump right on them and keep them discouraged. However, in each road game we’ve gotten off to poor starts and had to come back. Why did that happen and how can we get off to a strong start in this game?”
The Show
(I sometimes re-arrange the comments so that statements made on the same subject are reported together, even if they came at different points of the show.)
Coach said that “among the greatest World Series- except for the last game.” It prompted Matt to make a comparison: people complain that too many decisions in baseball are based on analytics and not enough on gut feelings: how much is coach Babers into analytics? “I love math. I love computers. I love numbers. But If I have a chance to get Michael Jordan the last shot with his fighting spirit, I’m going to do it. “
Liam in Pompey beat me to it again. He feels we could win the rest of the games but that Florida State is better than their 2-5 record. Coach felt that the BC game “showed the value of bringing southern teams up north to play- they don’t like to play in that weather when it’s cold and rainy. Boston College had a strong tailback, a strong line and a strong defense. Florida State hasn’t lost anybody on their defense and they are still very difficult to move the ball on. They’ve got a young quarterback, a 4-5 star guy who will cause problems when he’s a sophomore or a junior. I just hope he doesn’t become a sophomore this week- he’ll have 6-7 games under his belt. If they had 14 more points they’d have 1 loss. Florida State has been to a bowl every year since Bobby Bowden’s first season there. (That’s not entirely true. Bowden’s first season and only losing record was 1976. His 1978 team was 8-3 and uninvited and so was his 1983 team, (they were 6-5). Obviously, both teams would have been in bowls today.) “Their coaches are paid so much down there and their traveling party is twice our size. They have quality control guys all over the place. They are just like Alabama or LSU.”
I then called in my question. “We looked for the common denominator in the LSU, NC State, Miami and FSU – we need to look for the non-common denominator: all those games were on the road, in very tough places to play. To win we must play a crystal clear game: better and cleaner. But it’s also about the opponent and the place we play them. One coach told me that to win on the road, you have to take a good football team on the road. I believe we have a good football team. They haven’t won at home and we haven’t won on the road, so something’s got to give.”
Injury report: Antwan Cordy and Jordan Martin are out for the season. Martin was a grad transfer from Toledo, who is playing tonight and so that ends his collegiate career. But Kendall Coleman and Scoop Bradshaw will be back.
Coach is impressed with Cole Murphy’s performance but “We need to score touchdowns instead of field goals. We need to get more aggressive and we will be.”
John in Baltimore wondered if we use stats in recruiting players. He noted Wyoming recruited both Josh Allen and Eric Dungey, so they must have a system for picking the right prospects. Dino “We have an issue at SU: We have a reputation and when we offer a player, suddenly dozens of other schools decide they ought to offer the same player. Sometimes we have to tell other players we don’t have a scholarship for them. We have to tell out commitments when it’s ‘not cool’ to take trips to see other schools”, (presumably when we’ve told our other prospect we have no scholarships for them.) “The SEC schools were all over Tommy DeVito but he held them off.”
Rich in Clay lauded Coach Babers for “bringing a lot of integrity to the community and the program”. He wondered how we prepare for grass field games, since we play on turf. Dino said that we now have a grass field to practice on and can sometimes use of the fields as well. “It’s helped us, even if we haven’t won on the road.”
John in Syracuse wondered when we’d see more of Markenzy Pierre. “We like what Markenzy’s doing but he’s going to have to wait his turn. We finally got a 100 yard game out of our running back, (Dontae Strickland). We also got 100 yards from our quarterback. If you eliminate the 4 interceptions and get around 250 yards passing, now you’ve got a real offense….The guys back there, (where Pierre is) will have to wait.” (Which makes it kind of too bad we blew his redshirt.)
Marty called in and declared the coach was “A fresh breath of fresh air.” He asked how our defense would do against FSU’s offense and is the coach interested in the Florida job? HCDB: “We need our defense to play lights out. We also need to score TDs in the red zone…..The only job I talk about is the job I have. I’m blessed to be the head coach at Syracuse University.”
The “key to the game” is to get turnovers and stop giving the ball up and to get touchdowns instead of field goals. If we do that we may be excited coming back on the plane.”.
Dino introduced his special guest, Justin Lustig, his running backs and special teams coach. “It’s not easy to have the job your head coach used to have”.
How is the kicking game going? “The coverage on kickoffs and punts has been great all year. Cole and Sterling have been fantastic. We need to start making something out of the returns.” Matt noted that was pretty ahrd these days because the kickers make it hard to have a chance at a return.
Lustig said his most important job is to “evaluate performance and find the pieces”. He was at Eastern Illinois even before Coach Babers and reminisced about recruiting Jimmy Garoppolo out of a Chicago suburb. To be a good assistant coach, “You have to buy into the culture that the head coach puts forth.”
