- This the opening scene of ‘From Russia With Love’:
Conclusion: beating a guy with a James Bond mask on isn’t the same as beating James Bond.
Here’s what happened, (at 6:50), when he met the real thing:
From Russia With Love James Bond vs Red Grant
An FCS team is not an FBS team, certainly not a good one like Liberty or the ACC teams we’ll meet later.

- It’s no small thing to lost your two best receiving threats, Taj Harris and Luke Benson. And we might be without them for a while. Taj was even suited up for the game and Benson was on crutches with a knee brace. I thought maybe we had lost Tommy when he was hit going into a slide in an early possession. He was able to come back. With two running quarterbacks and 9 tough games to go, I hope the other quarterbacks on the roster, especially Jacobian Morgan, who appears to be the #3 guy, get good preparation to play as we may need them. Last year Dino said that it’s hard to give much attention beyond the two deeps and that’s why Morgan and the others were unprepared when both DeVito and Culpepper went down. I hope they found a way to give those players some attention this year.

- 16 penalties for 164 yards, three of which negated scoring plays, is completely ridiculous. That’s not a complain about the referees. And it wasn’t just freshmen at the end of the game. I can’t believe that we can’t be a more disciplined team. In three games, we have had 28 penalties vs. 12 for the other team. If we give Liberty all those breaks, they will strangle us.

That’s a lot of penalties, when is the last time we’ve had that many penalties?

We weren’t too far away from the college record for penalties in a game apparently, “Record for most penalties against one team in one game: 24, by San Jose State on October 4, 1986 (199 yards)” I struggled to verify this was true or not.

We tied our record: in 2016 we had 16 vs. BC. (Yes, another Dino team.)

We might be without Taj for a while? I thought I heard he’ll be back for Liberty?

Apparently, we set a new school record for penalty yards. I think the graphic on tv stated that the previous record was in 1958.

10/11/58 vs. Cornell: 140 yards. We won that one 55-0.

Are penalties over-rated?

No inside info here. It was something I heard on a post game show. Dino later seemed more optimistic but you know Dino. He's always talking to the next opposing coach.

Are penalties over-rated?

Only when the opponent is completely overmatched.

Otherwise - they are vitally important, and minimizing them is crucial when you struggle doing as many other things as we do.

Our ten historical games with the most penalties:

16 vs. Albany 9/18/21 - We won 62-24
16 at Boston College 10/22/2016 - We won 28-20
15 vs. George Washington 11/17/1962 - We won 35-0
15 vs. Rutgers 10/2/2004 - We won 41-31
14 at Rutgers 11/13/1999 - We lost 21-24 (OT)
14 vs. Maine 9/18/2014 - We won 38-14 (per the historical scores, this was 2010 , not 2014)
14 at Florida State 10/26/2019 - We lost 17-35
13 at Temple 10/3/1952 - We won 27-0
13 at Maryland 10/6/1973 - We lost 0-38
13 vs. Maryland 10/8/1983 - We lost 13-34
13 vs. Temple 10/7/1995 - We won 31-14
13 vs. Tulane 10/2/1999 - We won 27-10

The media guide lists only the game where we were penalized for the most yardage: vs. Cornell 10/11/58 140 - We won 55-0

That's 13 games and we won 9 of them.

Maybe penalties are indicative of how hard we are playing. or one-sided game produce more sloppy play or more hard feelings. Maybe all three.

I think we're losing the plot here.

Penalties are never good. Hence why they are named PENALTIES. False starts on FG attempts, illegal blocks that negate touchdowns, illegal formations etc. ARE. NOT. GOOD.

I may have lost the plot but not the resolution. We were 9-4 in those games. Why?

Back in the 70's when Don Shula was the Dolphin's coach and Al Davis was running the Raiders, the Dolphins always had the fewest penalties in the league and the Raiders had to most. And they were two of the best teams in the league.

Penalties are bad things but maybe penalties are the result of blow-outs or a symptom of aggressive play?

we have to stuff the dumb ones.. but half of these were marginal calls. hopefully its not the same mistake over and over by the same kids.. still not sure how we cant seem to get any teams holding our DL with the amount of pressure we have created.
