- Cal State Northridge beat LeMoyne 97-75 and Drexel beat Colgate 73-56. We beat Lemoyne 86-82 and Colgate 74-72. Thus we are 18 points worse than Cal State Northridge and 15 points worse that Drexel. That’s not what we were looking for.

- Defense is about staying in front of people. So is offensive line play. So we know what it looks like when we don’t. Coach Autry said that a lot of what people are complaining about comes from the accelerated pace at which we are playing. That’s doesn’t explain why we had 2 fast break points and Colgate had 22.

- In two games we’ve have 31 offensive rebounds and 20 second chance points.

- We are also 24 for 39 (61.5%) from the line, including three consecutive 1 and 1s in the last 23 seconds of this game by Jyare Davis, who hit 81% at Delaware last year, and Lucas Taylor, who hit 79% at Georgia State last year.

- Donnie Freeman has a superstar body with a “How should I know: I just got here” brain. As Brent Axe said, he just doesn’t know where he’s supposed to be when he’s out there. He’s also 6 for 19 from the field and 1 for 6 from the arc. One of the those Newhouse kids who appears on ESPN Syracuse after Orange Nation predicted he’d average 25 points a game this year. Donnie isn’t Benny Williams but he’s not Kevin Durant yet either.

- Jaquan Carlos looked like a million bucks vs. Clarion with 14 points10 assists 3 rebounds and 3 steals. He’s scored 7 points in the three games since. He does have 11 rebounds, (impressive for his size) and 17 assists. But he just doesn’t seem like much of a presence out there. And, despite being his conference’s defensive player of the year last year, he’s had trouble guarding people at this level. He may not be the answer for us at point guard.

- JJ Starling can score and he does have 9 rebounds and 6 assists in the two games. But he’s not really a point guard and he’s not a good defensive player. He fouled out in this game, something that shooting guards almost never do. Fouls are often the product of getting beaten on defense and reaching to make up for it. Carlos and Starling don’t give us much of a barrier out front.

- Kyle Cuffe may be #0 for a reason. He’s played 3+minutes so far and has no stats. You don’t know he’s out there.

I am generally a big fan of your posts, but, WOW, your trashing of Freeman is over the top.

The kid is a frosh 2 games into his career.

Maybe, if it continues, you make a post like this after ten games.

Patience, Grasshopper !!!!

If the defense remains this bad, and Red doesn’t give *some* time to Naheem and Cuffe, and *more* time to Davis and either Choppa or Lucas, then it’s coaching malpractice.

I'm supposed to wait until 10 games in to comment on what we've seen so far? As I see improvement. I'll give him full credit for it.

Of course not, nothing wrong with fair and respectful criticism, but the superstar body with a “How should I know: I just got here” brain, IMHO is over the top for a kid two games in. All your other criticisms were fair and respectful as are 99% of the criticisms in all of your downside posts. Just think you went wrong here. That's all - take or leave my comment as you see fit.

OK, he's young and he doesn't know where he's supposed to be on the court yet.

OK, but there's nothing wrong with setting expectations.

"Best recruit since Melo" has been applied to Paul Harris, Donte Greene, Chris McCullough, Benny Williams, and now Donnie Freeman.

Melo was unique in a few respects. He had quick instincts. He was a street baller, not an AAU baby. He played a man's game as an 18 year old kid, working the baseline, using that chicken wing to get his man out of the way without getting called for the offensive foul. Rebounded with major effort, quick off his feet.

Paul Harris was the most street baller of this bunch. None of the rest were in Melo's league, certainly not from the very beginning of his career. Remember Melo put up 27 points in a close lose to Memphis at MSG on national TV in his college debut.

The only people in that universe for us have been Billy Owens and Derrick Coleman. Everyone else took time including Jerami Grant.

So, those who think Donnie is going to score 20 points as a frosh and lead us to the Final Four need a reality check. Jerami Grant only averaged 4 pts and 3 rebs as a frosh, and then 12 and 8 as a soph, and he was only a 2nd round pick.

Right now, that's Donnie's upside - Jerami's sophomore year.

For contrast, Tyler Lydon averaged 13 points and 8.6 rebs as a soph, after averaging 10 and 6 as a freshman. Will Donnie be as good as Tyler Lydon? Tyler went at the end of the 1st round after his sophomore year.

Donnie was projected to be a high-end lottery pick, and certainly a one and done player.

He might want to plan on coming back for a second year. If his coursework in the classroom is anything to go by, he's certainly putting in the effort like he plans on staying eligible beyond this year.

Great post, DC, Billy, and Melo were exceptional at doing what was needed.
