- Coach Autry said after the game “We just didn’t show up.” Matt Park suggested that when the team went into the locker room at halftime, down 17-43, Red’s speech would “make the paint peel”. The team came out for the second half and in the first minute, gave up a Maryland lay-up, missed a shot, didn’t get the rebound and Maryland got a dunk. It was the start of a 2-10 run. It made me wonder: are these guys listening to Autry? Or are they tuning him out? By the way, Elijah Moore was sent to the scorer’s table 1 minute and 14 seconds into the game. Red said “it was something that was miscommunicated”.
- We were completely disorganized on both ends Nobody knew what offense we were running. It was just stand away from each other and let one guy try to ‘use the spaces’ to get to the basket. However, by the time he got to the paint, there weren’t any spaces. Chris Bell attempted 1 three and scored 2 points. He only played 17 minutes. Jyare Davis was the guy Moore replaced at the 1:14 mark. He wound up playing only 12 minutes and didn’t score. His only stats were two missed shots and 2 turnovers. Jaquan Carlos had 1NP in 40 minutes of play.
- And our ball handling an passing were comically bad. We had 21 turnovers for the first time in memory, most of them unforced. Sometimes our guys just seemed to be handing the ball to Maryland.
- Defensively, we allowed penetration out front with little opposition, (on one play, Chris Bell simply sidestepped a driving Terp and watched him go all the way to the basket to score). And we had no ‘help’ defense to make up for it. That’s been a problem all year and it hasn’t improved. And we don’t get back on the fast break, also a problem all year that hasn’t improved.
- The end result was an unwatchable game and, as Brent Axe says there, even the most devout SU fans are ceasing to watch these games: Syracuse basketball suffers worst loss of season to Maryland in Brooklyn
If Adrian Autry’s tenure here ends at the end of this season, (no point now: you think Alan Griffin is going to save the day?), this will be the biggest reason.
