- Even during the 19-0 streak, there were many missed opportunities. At one point we missed 8 shots in a row and were 11 for 25 in that stretch. CJ missed a bunny. Dion hit Triche for a three, which he missed), on a fast break when he had three undefended guys on the other side. Triche and then Joseph gave up open threes. Dion, clearly the third option from deep, wound up taking one and missing. We should have had 45-50 points in the first half, in which case the game would truly have been over.

- An 18 point halftime lead is great but you need a good second half start to keep things under control. Instead, with possession to star the half, we gave up 6 unanswered points and suddenly a game that had been 35-12 was 37-25. Marquette eventually got to within two, 59-57 and it seemed inevitable that would catch us. Can you imagine losing to them in their place, on an NCAA neutral court and then in our place when we were ranked #1 and had a 23 point lead? We were looking right down the barrel of that.

- Marquette used to be a finesse team that we would beat due to superior size and talent. They’ve become another Pittsburgh, shoving and grabbing and getting away with most of it because the refs figure they can’t call everything. They are going to continue to be trouble for us for as long as we still have to play them. I’m tired of playing teams like that. The ACC can’t come too soon.

- JB tried to explain why he played Scoop Jardine instead of Brandon Triche down the stretch by saying that Brandon and Dion tend to try to make plays by themselves instead of getting the ball to our big guys. Scoop, a pure point guard, runs our offense and gets the ball inside better. That’s nice. Getting the ball inside isn’t our offense this year. Scoop in this game was 1 for 5 from the field, had 3 assists and 6 turnovers. He seemed to have no idea what he’s doing at times. Brandon had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists vs. 3 turnovers. He also played excellent defense. We don’t need that down the stretch? Dion had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists vs. 2 turnovers. He’s absolutely the one you want with the ball in crunch time. There are times when Scoop is your best option- he certainly was in the Florida game. He’s had some other good games this year. But what this team is all about is seeing what each guy is giving you tonight and going with the guys who are giving you the most. And tonight that wasn’t Scoop.

- Rakeem Christmas has hit the wall. He’s played 31 minutes in the last three games. He’s 1 for 8 from the field, has scored 3 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, has no assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. He’s also committed 12 fouls.

- The second half was a vision of what I’ve been worrying about- what if we have a game where we aren’t forcing turnovers and aren’t hitting jump shots. After forcing 12 first half turnovers, we forced only four in the second half- and missed 6 of 9 treys. We got out-scored 36-47.

- You can tell it’s the Big East season. The officiating in the Providence game was bad. Tonight, it was a clown show. Totally inconsistent calls. Brandon Triche has guy fall on him from the Dome roof, makes a three anyway and there’s no call. Nothing got called inside, everything outside, ( a sign of lazy officiating). And it was all punctuated by endless meetings around the monitors while players stood around and the fans did the wave.

- Fab Melo has got to sand off the rough edges of his game. He got called early for shoving a guy out of bounds because Fab had fumbled away a pass. Later he pounded the ball out of a guy’s hand after a whistle, sending it into the stands. Then there was the flagrant foul, where he boxed out for a rebound by giving a guy an elbow in the face. He also complains about calls a lot. The Matts- Park and Roe- were predicting a technical by the end of the game. He’d better watch out or he’ll get a red card.

Good recap and good points about Fab. I've been noticing those things as well and the flagrant was a good call.

Fab with his own renewed enthusiasm and skill, which is the trend we certainly want, perhaps may be leading to him getting just a touch full of himself? Just a perception. Stick with business and own the middle, without the antics.

Question...have you been to the Yum yet? If so then how high up are those 300 seats? OK seats? Still some available for our game on Feb 13 for $39. I may just grab them. Thanks!

JB's point about playing Dion and Scoop down the stretch probably related to how things were going in 2H.. BT was on the floor in the 2H while Marq was closing the gap. Sure, BT had great numbers, but almost all of those were put up when things were loose and happy in the first half.
Reasons for big swings in the half -- foul trouble for Fab; BT never got it going again after intermission (apart from one very solid pull-up 3 in transition).

+1...agree...and for the bballer in me I too do not understand this explanation...except for fact that JB does not want any guard playing + minutes more than another among his top 3---even with Triche again not in the final 7 minutes of the 2nd half--he played more minutes than Scoop...perhaps this evening out minutes (discussed in previous of my post), is NOT A GOOD IDEA...but rather go with whichever guard is hot...Waiters, Scoop or Triche.

Yes, but if Triche is hot in the first half, and not so much in the second half (long run at the start of the second half, not much production), then who do you go with "down the stretch"? Of course, you need Dion in crunch time when others are struggling, as he has proved himself in those situations. Triche can be streaky -- terrific in the first half yesterday, but more part of the problem than savior when Marquette turned up the heat in the second half. So, JB goes back to Scoop. Just possible that JB likes how the Dion & Scoop combo meshes when the defensive pressure is on. (Providence was a different story -- BT was good in the second half. There, it did seem that JB was making sure that Scoop got his turn as well.)

Definitely not. He was doing these things last year. He's an emotional player thats all (and off the court too apparently). Hop just needs to help him keep it under control.

Grab them and bring a megaphone. We need all the help we can get there.

Triche in the second half was better than Scoop at any point during the game.

There seems to be no middle ground for Scoop...he's either really good or flat out bad. Yesterday was the bad, right from the get go. He had a bad TO in the first minute and his decision making was poor the whole game. Anyone can have an off shooting game but then do some other positive things. He had zero rebounds. His defense was bad. The MU guards blew by him at the top of the zone several times for layups or easy dish offs when the bigs moved to pick up the driver. He was late several times getting out on 3-pt shooters. Fortunately MU missed most of them. He was just in a funk. Thankfully CJ rebounded his FT miss late or that could have given MU another chance to catch us. I was hoping to see some MCW but I guess JB might have felt he's just not strong enough yet to play against such a physical team.

I have sat up in the nose bleeds before. As long as you gets tickets that are in sections where you are looking down at the court (i.e., like mid court or so), they are fine. You are high up but you get a good overview of game. It is a little steep. If you are high up and behind the baskets, those would be a little tougher to see from, although have never sat there. Last year, I was at Cuse-UofL game and sat kind of high up and at an angle (not behind basket, not mid-court view), and they weren't that bad. I could still rout for Cuse, despite getting frustrated when they lost. I sat in student section for Gtown game last month...those were nice. The high up seats look really high up from there.

My advice...go for the tickets. Try to get some with a good perspective of court and lower down in these sections. Bring binoculars for a really good view of things. But definitely go! It's a great arena. I hope to go again too.

Yes, wasn't Scoop's best game by any means. But as good as Triche was in the first half, he was brutal at points in the second half -- forced shots, turnovers, letting the Marq guards breeze into the lane . If you want to explain the swings in this game (great first half; not so great in the second half), you can look at Fab's foul trouble and Triche going cold.
I have no complaints with JB's decision to go with Scoop & Dion to close out that game. Luckily, Scoop made he free throws, hit Fab for a dunk, and Dion made the key play . . .

Scoop was 1 for 2 from the line. CJ bailed him out with a rebound.
