- We had our first really good offensive game in a while but I didn’t think we played very well defensively. UCONN had been struggling on offense but they hit 42% of their three point shot and also got the ball inside too easily. Shabazz Napier had been 0 for 13 from three and 7 for 39 overall in his last four games but was 4 for 6 with two treys in this one. Andre Drummond was 0 for 6 at Louisville and 2 for 7 in the first half but he was leading the comeback with three baskets in a row and a couple of free throws when he went down due to a twisted ankle, (I think he stepped on CJ Fair’s foot). We still really haven’t had the “complete game” we’ve been waiting for all year from this team. (Maybe they are saving that for Kentucky in the final.)
- Our fabled depth is becoming a fable as several players continue fade from the picture. Rakeem Christmas and Michael Carter- Williams played 2 minutes each while James Southerland got 5.
- Baye Moussa Keita played 18 but never attempted a shot. Since the Eastern Michigan game on 11/29, Baye has played 246 minutes and attempted 22 shots, (he has made 15 of them). Before that he attempted 12 shots in 82 minutes, (and made 11 of them). At that point it seemed to me he was the one big man we had who was developing some post up moves and might actually supply us with some inside scoring. This was the third time this year Baye has played at last 10 minutes without attempting a shot.
- It was the second straight game where Rakeem Christmas has been in the starting line-up and was yanked immediately. He’s played a total of 5 minutes in those games. I though he might get extended minutes in this game because Connecticut plays two big guys. Brian Barrett made a good point in his post game show: Rakeem seems more comfortable at the center position and Baye isn’t giving you much subbing for Melo right now: why not share some of Baye’s minutes backing up Melo with Rakeem? What has Baye shown such that he should get 18 minutes to Rakeem’s 2 minutes? How is Rakeem going to develop as a player playing such limited time?
- Michael Carter- Williams had a freshman moment when he gave us a second straight fast break basket and responded to the coach’s criticism with a “Who? Me?” Look and started jawing back at the coach, moving toward him as if to go face to face. Mike Hopkins grabbed him and pulled him away. Dion Waiters, of all people, put his hand on MCW’s cranium to indicate he should calm down. Last year, that would have been Dion flying off the handle. But it worked. JB sat MCW down next to him and gave him a “father-son” type lecture to try to “change the player”. I think that will work, too.
- Two years ago we were rolling along at 24-1 and the Louisville Cardinals beat us. Then they did it again. They’ve won 7 in a row themselves. They aren’t hoping to beat us again. They are expecting to.
