- Were you wondering why Drew Allen was a back-up for three years? It’s not a question of whether he’s really better than Terrell Hunt. Is he any better than Charley Loeb? He focuses on his primary guy, throws into coverage, throws it low, which produces a lot of tipped balls, (despite being 6-5) and throws it behind guys. In two games he’s got 1TD and 6 interceptions. Maybe it’s too early to make a switch. But maybe it isn’t. If he’s not the guy maybe this is the best time to make the switch with the Wagner and Tulane games coming up.

- I thought we were going to have a powerful running game. In this game we came out firing passes and didn’t go to the running game until we were down 0-20. How many times have you seen a football team start passing and then switch to the run when they are down three touchdowns? Once we made them respect the run, we started scoring points.

- I thought the offensive line would be a minor fix but so far this year they have not been impressive. Maybe the new guys aren’t good enough. Or maybe the returning guys aren’t playing as well as they did. Or maybe we just don’t have that one outstanding guys to anchor the line, as Pugh did.

- In the third quarter when we’d scored to get within three TDs at 13-34, we got the ball in Northwestern territory with a chance to score and make it a two touchdown game with more than a quarter left. On 3rd and 5 we couldn’t get the play off in time and didn’t call a time out. Now it’s 3rd and 10. Allen throws one over Broyld’s head. We still have the ball in Northwestern’s territory at the 42. We are down by three TDs with 18 minutes left in the game and we punt. The ball flies into the end zone so we gained 22 yards. The Wildcats score in 6 plays to make it 13-41. Game over. That punt bothered me far more than the one everybody complained about last week. If you are going to make a major comeback you’ve got to give your team a chance to do it.

- I thought we had a strong defense. It looked like it last week except for a couple of long pass plays. Northwestern obviously saw those plays and they came out firing but with far more effectiveness than we did. Their two quarterbacks wound up 30 for 37 for 375 yards and 4 touchdowns, with no interceptions. 4/ 0 beats 1/ 4 every time. And Cain Colter motored for 83 rushing yards and 11 carries and another TD.

- We never really got any pressure on their backfield. Robert Welch after looking like Dwight Freeney last week, rarely had his name mentioned at all.

- Ross Krautman, who was once automatic, followed up his missed field of last week with a missed extra point this week. Since Northwestern had 34 points they were vulnerable if we could get five touchdowns and 5 conversions. But Ross surrendered that advantage by clanking one off the left upright, his first miss in 66 tries.

- We seemed to have a lot of guys down in the first half, often a sign that you are being out-hit by the other team. In the second half, we played much better and there were fewer guys who needed help getting up.

- Can we please get off to some kind of a start in these games. Our first plays have been a mess and we continued a trend of the last couple of years of giving up almost immediate scores in road games. It’s like a boxer who gets knocked down in the first round and is never really right after that.

I would have been content if you just stopped with the 'Upside' report.

I hated the punt too.

Good points SWC. The offensive line struggled especially the right side with blitzes and hopefully that problem has been addressed.

As for the punt...it was the best the defense had played and that fools gold turned SS's decision to back his defense and did that ever burn him. It was the wrong call and obviously in hindsight extremely wrong.

I'm worried Allen is going to give one of our lineman a concussion with a thrown ball to the back of the head. All that formal teaching and this is how he throws?

The d-line needed to play well today and they got manhandled. Then too many blitzes and lost containment.

This is a great question for the next coaches show

I'm thinking about it but looking at Shafer's news conference I'm not sure I want to seen to be ripping the guy. You don't get much in the way of good information when you put him on the defensive. I have in mind a softer question that might still produce an interesting answer.

Someday, people are going to come around to the idea that it doesn't matter how well a defense is playing, having your defense on the field is NEVER better than simply having possession of the ball.

Otto I don't think SS will ever be that guy that thinks the way you do about punts. Not from his background of being a defensive coach and old school thought. I may be wrong though.

Disagree about the no pressure on their QB. I think we frequently got pressure. But we had to all out blitz to do it, and their QBs/WRs were so good at picking up the blitzes that we ended up whiffing, and they go for big gains.

I think the coaches game planned to have an effective early passing attack and then the pressure from the blitzes stunted that and put the offense and staff into a bit of a funk. Add to that the D just being pushed around to me the coaches didn't adjust quickly enough to what was going on. My guess was that they defiantly thought the passing attack would be quite effective given that California isn't that good and moved the ball through the air very well and our D would hold its own.

They should have ran Smith more early once the D got clocked...slowed down the NW offensive rhythm and then once he established himself, pass when the backers are closer to the line.

I know. When I get that lost look in my eyes and talk about this stuff I'm mostly dreaming of a philosophy that maybe my great grandchildren can enjoy.

Sharer was trying to keep it close which is a bullsh!t pu$$y move for a tough guy.

And even if keeping it close is your objective, it's still the wrong move!
