- Last week we squashed a bug. This week we trapped a mouse. In two weeks, we take on a Tiger. It will be a totally different deal.

- I’m not happy with our running game. It should be a strength of the team and we have put up some numbers these last two weeks against weak opposition. But we didn’t really dominate. We weren’t ripping off big chunks of yardage or even getting steady gains. Tulane was a much smaller team than we were but we had trouble moving them out of there, at least until the last drive, which was against a combination of tired starters and reserves. Smith, Gulley, Morris and McFarlane are a very talented group but they are having trouble showing it.

- The first half tackling was ugly. Devon Breaux should have been brought down on the Tulane 6 but ran it out to the 46 after escaping. Orleans Darkwa could have been stopped in the backfield but ran 22 yards on 2nd and 16. They wound up with a field goal. Later Rob Kelley broke several tackles on his 45 yard touchdown run to make it 21-10. They fixed it but did they fix it permanently? Shafer/Bullough like their mistakes made at full speed. Missed tackles can be the unintended consequence of that. Should we just expect that will happen form time to time and hope we can make big plays to make up for it? Or can we retain our aggressiveness and still be a sound tackling team?

- Brisley Estime was not among our 11 pass receivers, despite being in for a lot of plays. He almost produced a turnover when he broke off a route and Hunt threw to where Brisley was supposed to be. I still think this guy can be a big weapon for us but we have to get him the ball- and he has to run the right pattern to get it. Ashton Broyld also had a quiet day with 1 catch for 10 yards. These guys are supposed to be game breakers and they should have feasted on a team like Tulane. The “H” back was the Not Home back today.

- The new uniforms? We are the Orange and we should look like it. Does the University want all its fans to show up in blue?

- Here comes the ACC. My impression watching games and looking at scores is that the conference, which has been a disappointment since the first Big East raid, may be turning into the sort of bully-boy conference they were expected to be. Every team we will play for the rest of the season will be a good. But they will be playing a good team, too.

I bet we see an all orange uni with the same helmet vs Clemson. It won't be an issue.

How about blue helmets, orange jerseys and blue pants?

Sounds good to me. I say have a bunch of options that are respectful of the past but fresh for the players...

Good post; was waiting to see your take on the negatives. Two, in particular.

Regarding tackling, it's a fundamental problem with some of the players, nothing to do with system. Keon Lyn's technique doesn't seem to have changed in three years. He looks to spear guys. Sometimes he whiffs. It's awfully frustrating - just wrap the guy up!

Kobena's drops: oy. A lot of us spent the summer defending him against the bad hands reputation. Dunno if he's healthy, but the rep might be deserved.

Love Eskridge, but allowing that deep completion was really bad.

I had a laugh about Estime - called out "this one's going for 6" when he subbed in. Hunt looked to him, then the guy in the white shirt nearly caught it as Estime pulled up short. Good stuff. My feeling (or hope): he and Broyld were used sparingly in order to give Clemson fewer looks. Today was a Milton Berle game - nothing fancy, just pull out enough to win.

A Milton Berle game?

I can't find a remotely appropriate definition for a family-friendly forum such as this, but credit Bill Simmons (back when he was one of the wittiest sportswriters of his generation, ten years or so ago). Worth a Google.

I see what you did there with those animals. Nicely done! I was starting to get a little distressed by your unrelenting negativity until I remembered it was "The Downside." I'll go find "The Upside" now.
