Fascinating report from the NCAA (link opens a pdf file)

only 27 schools in the Bowl subdivision generated a profit from their athletics programs (same as last year). The median loss for all FBS schools was over $12 million (higher than last year).

Football and men's basketball programs tend to be profitable, but almost everything else loses money.

The definition of "revenues" in this report does not include alumni donations driven by athletics, which is probably both increases the total amount of schools in the black while at the same time increases inequality between the elite schools and all the rest.

Doesn't also mention amount of additional applications a school received by playing Bcs level sports. I for one picked Syracuse over Tulane solely because of sports and that was 25 yrs ago.

Page 30 gives the break down of median revenue, including alumni contributions.
