The good, the bad, the ugly

We'll see what happens in the coming weeks, but I'd hope the coaches learned the lesson last year that their LBs can't hold up over 12 games if they're playing all the snaps. We rotated 4 last year, and while we avoided the season ending injury, it was clear that the guys playing in games 10-12 weren't the same as the guys playing games 1-9. They were beaten up.

I assume Dino has ultimate control but yes on the position coach and coordinators are the first decision makers

From my seat I'd think Dino has complete control over who wants to play QB and if he wants the whole 2nd team O or D to go in. I'd venture a guess the rest is up to the assistants as there would be no way to micromanage all that as a HC and faith in your assistants to do their jobs.

I'd love to see Shy play as he brings something different to the table and sometimes it's good do that...bring a change of pace vs the O.

Was LB the only position group that didn't rotate in 2's? It seems every other group did.

So I’ve gone back and forth or posting this about a million times and slept on it a couple nights and have come to the conclusion of it doesn’t matter if I do or not so here it is.

I’ll tell you what bothered me about the defense the other night.

First yes my son didn’t play and I’m ticked about that. Shy was built for stopping runs and getting after qaurter backs. At first glance the linebackers seemed to have played well but watching the game a few times and rewatching some of the big plays there was mistakes made by linebackers that gave up those really big plays. A few things happened that were really positives so it hides those mistakes but without those mistakes that game would have looked much different.
Second we are doing the same thing we did last year. 3 guys all game. You can’t complain about depth and experience if you don’t put the younger guys in when you are up huge. If you don’t give the rest of the roster a shot and give your starters a rest during those times you WILL NEVER HAVE EXPERIENCE OR DEPTH. What are they going to do if one of the guys god forbid gets hurt? Put a guy out there with 0 play time and talk about experience... that’s on you coach.
Now I have inside knowledge of course and as usual I won’t discuss the behind the scenes stuff I know but I have a lot more about this that has made me mad but from just a general watching the game point anyone can see what I just talked about and as far as I can see unless things change we are heading towards the same performance we saw last year when the 3 starters. Got beat up and tired. Let’s hope things change
My goodness, Bam...this post reads so much like the ones we tend to see on the hoops forum when talking about Boeheim and his “short bench”.
To build depth, IMO, kids need to play. What i saw were guys giving it their all of course, but unless the drop off is huge, you gotta let players like Shy get some licks. I’ll never understand the mentality of not getting kids experience. It’s just common sense, IMO.

Didn't even realize that we didn't rotate in lbs.

Yeah. I don't get it.

Hang in there.

Of course if he does and we lose or they perform poorly it's, "WITH is he doing playing 2nd stringers. That's why we have a first string."
If he does and the play well it's a real bonus.
I'd say at this point, w/o risking team anarchy, Dino needs to slide a few more guys in there. Especially at WR and LB. Seems to be decent rotation at the DB position. Would also like to see a Jarveon Howard sighting.

I see zero reason to play Howard this season, unless right now he's significantly better than Strickland or Neal.

As for the damned if you do damned if you don't with playing 2nd string lbs, I mean... most teams rotate in their 2nd string. It's completely bizarre that we don't.

I don't get it. I mean, geez it would be one thing if our defense was good and the drop-off was huge when the 2nd unit comes in, but our defense is bad. We're going to go from crappy to crappier? Instead of running 90 seconds off the clock for WMU to score three TDs, they'd do it in 60 seconds? So what?

No, but it shouldnt be sacrilegious to let guys in for a series or 2 when up big. Experience is the key here. Tommy D got some needed PT because Dino knows ED could be out in one play (knock on wood). I bet he’ll look a lot more comfortable at his next opportunity. Why should it be any different for other positions like LB, etc.
And, as you pointed out, if they play well, it’s a real bonus moving forward.

True, but we get 4 games while maintaining redshirt status. As to the rest of it, I agree. We couldn't do any worse in most cases, and some of these second and third teamers need a trial run. Maybe they're gamers. Someone could emerge.

Eh, yeah, I guess the 4 games thing is pretty huge in everybody's favor.
