Going on that cruise I went on threw my fall schedule off. The high school playoffs began while I was away and then I had to do my SU basketball preview when I got back and had various other chores and projects so I was unable to give them the coverage I normally do. Instead, I offer this summary of what happened.

Section III Playoffs

Section III of New York State basically covers Central New York. There are five classifications based on enrollment: AA for the largest schools, then A, B, C and D. (They also a class below that of schools who didn’t feel they can compete, sponsored by the National Football Foundation. They compete for their own sectional championship but do not advance to the state playoffs.) Some schools are “borderline schools” that switch classifications in some years as their enrollment or the statistical standard changes. In rare cases, schools are promoted beyond their enrollment, usually because they are private schools with no boundaries such as a public school system would have, and can draw students, (and elite players) from all over. The local example of that is Christian Brothers Academy, (CBA), which, by enrollment would be in Class C and was there at one time but so dominated that class, then Class B, then Class A that they now play in Class AA and have won the state championship at that level.

Class AA
Cicero North Syracuse beat Henninger 48-6
Henninger vs. Cicero-North Syracuse
it was 48-0 after three quarters. Jaiquawn McGriff scored three times.

Fayetteville-Manlius beat Corcoran 22-14
Kicking and defense advance Fayetteville-Manlius to second round in 22-14 win
Some clever kick-offs and A late sack preserved the win for the Hornets.

West Genesee beat Christian Brothers Academy 38-8
West Genesee downs Christian Brothers Academy, moves on to semifinals
What’s happened to CBA, a long-time powerhouse and former state champion? West Genesee opened with 31 unanswered points to put this one away.

Liverpool beat Utica Proctor 20-14
Liverpool, Proctor engage in fight following Warriors playoff win (video)
The Warriors won a tight defensive duel. Nobody won the post-game fight.

Cicero-North Syracuse beat Fayetteville-Manlius 46-7
C-NS overpowers F-M in Class AA sectional football semifinal
This was supposed to be a big hurdle for the Northstars, who had beaten the Hornets only 35-21 during the season. This game was 40-0 at halftime. Connor Hayes threw for 306 yards. McGriff had 87 yards rushing and 98 receiving including a 67 yarder and scored twice.

West Genesee beat Liverpool 17-14
West Genesee edges Liverpool in Class AA sectional football semifinal
It was another defensive struggle but West Genesee, unlike Corcoran, completed a late drive to beat Liverpool.

Cicero-North Syracuse beat West Genesee 40-0 for the championship, their second in a row.
C-NS defense shuts down West Genesee in second half of 27-10 victory
The Wildcats had been the only other team to lose to CNS by a respectable score, 10-27 but they were no match in the final. The Northstars scored on a 50 yard run on the first play of the game from Jeremiah Willis and the rout was on. Willis ran for 115 yards on 11 carries.

The Northstars looked unbeatable going into the States: 10-0-0, 408-87, including 134-13 in the playoffs. That’s not as dominant as the previous year: 10-0-0, 525-107, including 158-35 in the playoffs. But dreams of my alma mater bringing back a state championship persisted.

Class A
Indian River beat Fulton 65-18
Fulton vs. Indian River
Fulton failed to avenge an earlier 18-53 defeat. Guillermo Rosario-Acosta rushed for 163 yards and 3 scores on just 4 carries!

Auburn beat Central Square 28-23
Auburn comes up with two late defensive stops, defeats Central Square
Auburn who was the AA state title in 2006, is now competing at the A level. They used back-to-back interceptions to clinch the victory over Central Square, another former AA team.

Carthage beat Jamesville-DeWitt 38-15
High school football: Carthage takes down Jamesville-DeWitt in Section 3 Class A quarterfinal (VIDEO)
Carthage had no problem with the Red Rams. I can remember when J-D was a power in the old County league north but their presence in the playoffs with a 1-6 record illustrates that there seems little point in having separate A and AA divisions.

Whitesboro beat East Syracuse-Minoa 41-0
Whitesboro scores 41 points, earns fourth shutout in win over ESM
ESM has had some good teams in recent years but seems to have slipped this year. They were no match for undefeated Whitesboro, who has been a power for as long as I can remember. Jeff Cubino rushed for 138 yards and 3 TDs while Zach Hoage rushed for 176 yards and 2 scores.

Indian River beat Auburn 45-14
Guillermo Rosario-Acosta leads Indian River back to Class A championship game
The amazing Rosasio-Acosta rushed for 279 yards and 2 scores of 68 and 38 yards on 11 carriers.

Carthage beat Whitesboro 31-19
Football: Whitesboro's reign ends with semifinal loss to Carthage
Every expected a battle of the Warriors- undefeated Indian River vs. undefeated Whitesboro – in the final but the Comets had other plans, building up a 31-7 lead after three quarters.

Indian River beat Carthage 33-21
High school football: Indian River defeats Carthage to win Section 3 Class A crown
This time Kwazsi Gaddis was the star, running for 173 yards and 4 TDs and getting a pick six to clinch it. It was the second time that the Warriors had beaten the Comets by that exact score.

Indian River won the state title in 2014 and was ready to make a run for another: 10-0, 464-154 .

Class B
Skaneateles beat Chittenango 51-18
Eagle News Online – Lakers rout Chittenango, to face VVS in sectional semifinals
These Lakers were the state Class C champions last year and are now #2 in Class B. Pat hackler passed for 247 yards on just 12 completions and ran for 79 yards on 6 carries.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill beat Westhill 19-7
Rotach scores three times, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill defeats Westhill
Tyler Rotach's three rushing scores provided all the offense necessary.

Oneida beat Marcellus 18-7
Oneida pulls off upset on the road against Marcellus
Lucas Albro ran for two scores and threw for a third.

Cazenovia beat Homer 61-21
Eagle News Online – Caz ousts Homer, 61-21, in Class B football sectionals
These Lakers are the perennial Class B power in this section. They looked the part in demolishing defending champion Homer, rushing for 409 yards on the ground.

Skaneateles beat Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 47-13
Skaneateles runs to 47-13 win over V-V-S in Class B football semifinal
Hackler threw for 276 yards and a touchdown and ran for three more scores, including a 68 yarder.

Cazenovia beat Oneida 40-0
Cazenovia defense drops hammer on Oneida in 40-0 football playoff victory
Caz rolled up another 371 yards on the ground and shut out Oneida to boot to set up a dream match-up: the Cazenovia Lakers 8-1 , 308-94 vs. the Skaneateles Lakers 9-0, 429-111

Skaneateles beat Cazenovia 41-10
Feeling B-eautiful: Skaneateles football nabs Class B crown over Cazenovia
The result was a disappointedly one-sided game dominated on both sides of the ball by Skaneateles. Hackler, probably the section’s best player, passed for 200 yards and ran for 66 more. Does Cazenovia have to change its name now?

Skaneateles will now have to take on mighty Chenango Forks, the #1 ranked team in the state in Class B and the winners of a record 30 games and 5 titles in the state playoffs since they began in 1993. They have a history of devouring Section 3 teams.

Class C
Holland Patent beat Thousand Island 42-6
Thousand Islands vs. Holland Patent
Down 0-6, the Golden Knights rolled up 42 unanswered points to advance. Jason Haas ran for 222 yards and 3TDs.

Lowville beat Mount Markham 30-0

General Brown beat Little Falls 42-14
General Brown continues to roll on offense, defeats Little Falls
The Lions are the section’s perennial power in this class and looked like it, rushing for 385 yards.

Holland Patent beat Lowville 49-28
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...haw-runs-passes-holland-patent-past-lowville/
Holland Patent quarterback Nick Herringshaw ran for four touchdowns and passed for another.

The Lions led 36-7 after three quarters. Treijan Garret rushed for 174 yards and passed for 132 in a losing effort. Tre Coney ran for 145 yards and 2 scores for the winners.

Holland Patent beat General Brown 21-14
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...neral-brown-in-class-c-football-championship/
The Golden Knights won a defensive duel with the lions, thanks to a late interference penalty that negated an interception and allowed their winning drive to continue.

Holland Patent was a sterling 10-0, 363-111 heading into a confrontation with #1 state ranked Susquehanna Valley.

Class D
Cato-Meridian beat Frankfort-Schuyler 22-14
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...s-upset-win-over-top-seed-frankfort-schuyler/
The Blue Devils reversed an earlier 14-35 defeat. Isiah Swan scored three touchdowns.

Onondaga beat Dolgeville 43-6
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/game/score/4506385/
A battle of perennial Class D powers was surprisingly one-sided and Dolgeville only scored late in the fourth quarter to avoid the shut-out. Wes Corr scored three times and Zach Delaney threw for two scores and ran for another.

Herkimer beat Sandy Creek 36-8
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/game/score/4506386/
Wyatt Renshaw ran for 144 yards and 2 scores in 14 carries.

Beaver River beat Sauquoit Valley 28-22
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/game/score/4506387/
Colin Noftsier was a workhorse, carrying the ball 31 times for 165 yards and 2TDs. Ethan martin ahd 109 yards and 2 scores on 17 carries for the losers.

Onondaga beat Cato-Meridian 26-0
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/5754725910415363405/cato-vs-onondaga/
The Tigers were on their best roll in years. Jason Holbrook ran for two scores and atwo point conversion while the defense shut down Cato-Meridan.

Herkimer beat Beaver River 57-34
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...w-lead-herkimer-to-class-d-championship-game/
Adam Green rushed for 239 yards and scored three TDs on the ground. He also hauled in a 51-yards touchdown pass. Wyatt Renshaw ran for 172 yards and also scored three rushing touchdowns in the win.

Onondaga beat Herkimer 20-6
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...herkimer-in-class-d-football-sectional-final/
The Magicians found a tiger in their hat rather than a rabbit. A 35 yard pick-six by Jason Holbrook clinched it.

Onondaga 7-2, 273-111 would now face another Section IV schools that likes to devour Section 3 teams, Tioga. In recent years Tioga has terrorized our champs: Westmoreland 55-34 in 2011; Sandy Creek 54-13 in 2012; Herkimer 43-13 in 2013; Dolgeville 46-22 in 2014, Sandy Creek again 50-14 in 2015 and, (after a year in which they didn’t win the section) Dolgeville again 46-16 in 2017.

The State Playoffs:

Class AA

Rochester Aquinas (5) beat Lancaster (6) 39-7
Aquinas runs away from Lancaster in Class AA regional
Aquinas, who has won more state titles than any other school, avenged a shut-out loss in last year’s state quarterfinals blowing by the Lancaster Legends, rushing for 356 yards. The Little Irish’s only loss was to Friendship Academy of Washington DC. Against New York State teams they were 10-0, 402-180.

Cicero-North Syracuse (3) beat Elmira-Southside (4) 42-20
Cicero-North Syracuse defeats Elmira 42-20 in state quarterfinals
The Northstars beat Elmira in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row but it wasn’t as easy as last year’s 57-14 game. This one was 20-20 at halftime before Jaiquawn McGriff took over. He ran 61, 65 and 77 yards for touchdowns, finishing with 238 yards on 16 carries and 4 touchdowns.

New Rochelle (1) beat Newburgh Free Academy (9) 42-7
Football Game Recap: Newburgh Free Academy vs. New Rochelle - MaxPreps
New Rochelle, another perennial state power, (4 titles) brushed past Newburgh after building up a 28-0 first half lead.

Bye- Shaker (2)

Rochester Aquinas (5) beat Cicero-North Syracuse (3) 28-21
Cicero-North Syracuse loses to Aquinas in Class AA state football semifinal
For the second straight year my Northstars lost a heart-breaker in the state semi-finals. Last year the margin of defeat was a game-opening kick-off return and a game-ending pick six, losing 21-35 to Lancaster of Section 6. (Being unable to tackle Joe Andressen didn’t help, either.) This eyar, CNS scored first but then got steam-rolled by 28 straight Aquinas points. Then they put on a furious late rally to close to within 21-28. On the final play, a desperation pass went beyond the grasp of the last defender and into the hands of a Northstar receiver – who was falling down at the time and could not hold on. If he kept his feet he could have caught it and run into the end zone for the tying score. But it was not to be.

New Rochelle (1) beat Shaker (2) 27-19
Shaker football falls short in state semifinal
New Rochelle overcame a 13-19 halftime deficit behind 281 rushing yards and three scores from Jordan Forrest.

Rochester Aquinas (5) beat New Rochelle (1) 21-14 for the championship
Football: New Rochelle roars back, but mistakes prove costly in state final defeat
Another New Rochelle comeback, this time from a 0-14 deficit, fell short. Forrest had 170 yards and two scores but had a third called back. The Little Irish held and then scored on a 90 yard run by Caron Robinson to win it. Robinson ran for 156 yards and two scores.

The final lines for these teams:
Rochester Aquinas 12-1 (478-249) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 2/758 States: 26-6 with 8 titles
New Rochelle 11-2 (506-157) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 13/1242 States: 15-11 with 4 titles

Elmira-Southside 9-2 (473-231) NYSSWA #20 MaxPreps 58/3728 States: 1-4 with 0 titles
(The Max Preps listings are the state and national ranks among all schools)
It’s interesting that the only two schools who had ever won a New York State title played for this title.

Gaddis is more of the slasher/speedster of the two while Rosario-Acosta combines an ability to pick up yards in traffic with strong, fast bursts.”

Glens Falls (2) beat Marlboro Central (9) 48-28
https://capitalregionhssports.com/2...urnt-hills-ballston-lake-lose-close-contests/
Girard passed for 300 yards and ran for another 28. He passed for two scores, one from 85 yards out and also returned a fumble for a score.

Glens Falls (2) beat Batavia (5) 55-32 for the championship.
https://capitalregionhssports.com/2...ms-second-class-b-state-title-in-three-years/
Ray Leach was again fabulous with 410 yards rushing and 5 TDs but Glens Falls ran away with their second Class B title in three years, coming back from a 0-14 deficit to win going away 55-32. Joe Girard passed for 314 yards and two TDs and ran for two more. Aalijah Sampson ran for 135 yards and 4 scores.
Leach, who had been stabbed in an August incident, ran for 1,645 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in the four game she played in the month of November – the section championship game and the three state playoff games. For the season he rushed for 3,031 yards and 48TYDs. Girard passed for 3,166 yards and 37 scores and ran for 399 yards and 13 more, thus accounting for 50TDs.

Class C

Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) beat Saranac (7) 20-7 in a preliminary game
https://www.pressrepublican.com/spo...cle_ab62f808-df1d-11e8-8568-bb00d38d41a8.html
A pick six and a blocked punt late in the game rescued victory from the jaws of defeat for Ogdensburg.

Cleveland Hill (6) beat Warsaw-Letchworth (5) 54-6
https://pickinsplinters.com/2018/11...egional-cleveland-hill-runs-over-letsaw-54-6/
Cleveland Hill ran for 467 yards against a stacked box in this blow-out. Their blocking techniques must be pretty good.

Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Holland Patent (3) 43-7
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...squehanna-valley-class-c-state-regional-game/
Hey! H-P led 7-6 at one point! Billy Sheridan scored three times for the winners. H-P had 27 plays that gained nothing or went backwards.

Dobbs Ferry (1) beat Chester (9) 35-14
https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/...as-flawless-day-state-playoff-win/1893219002/
Awvise Khan had 20 carries for 154 yards to lead the Eagles, who made a goal line stand at the end of the first half to preserve a 12-7 lead and then drove down the field to open the third quarter for a score and two point conversion that gave them a 20-7 lead and control of the game.

Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) beat Cambridge-Salem (2) 16-6
http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/...to-reach-state-semifinals-in-class-c-20181110
Ogdensburg shocked the state’s #1 ranked team, which had been averaging 40 points a game by totally shutting them down until there were only 6 minutes left in the game. (Note: Cambridge, who won the state title in Class D in 2016 and 2017 joined nearby Salem High for a combined team due to declining enrollment. They had done this previously in 2014. Most of the players came from Cambridge as Salem didn’t even field a team in 2017 and in 2016 they’d gone 2-8 and lost to Cambridge 0-68. But the combined enrollment moved them up from Class D to Class C.)

Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Cleveland Hill (6) 21-20
https://www.binghamtonhomepage.com/sports/local-sports/sabers-edge-out-eagles-21-20/1607907000
The Sabers took a 21-6 halftime lead but barely held on to win 21-20. Jarvon Thomas went 76 to the house on a third and 26 run to get the Eagles within one. But a fumble on fourth and two with two minutes to play was their last gasp.

Dobbs Ferry (1) beat Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) 55-22
https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/...ack-dome-after-beating-ogdensburg/2013367002/
Dobbs Ferry slammed the door on Ogdensburg early, taking a 35-0 halftime lead. Ogdensburg was the bigger team so the Eagles went outside to run for 404 yards.

Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Dobbs Ferry (1) 27-6 for the championship
https://www.pressconnects.com/story...s-sabers-unbeaten-state-champions/2062125002/
Susquehanna Valley closed out a dominant season by beating Dobbs Ferry by three touchdowns for the title. Quarterback Jarred Freije scored three times and led the defensive charge from his linebacker positon.

Class D

Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Alexander (5) 29-6
http://www.post-journal.com/sports/local-sports/2018/11/cant-be-stopped/
The shut-out was lost on an 86 yard pass play on the last play of the game. Derek Ecklund rushed for 154 yards on 25 carries for the winners.

Tioga (4) beat Onondaga (3) 56-6
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.co...-loss-to-tioga-in-class-d-state-quarterfinal/
Coincidentally Onondaga’s only score in this game came on an 81 yard run In recent years Tioga has terrorized our champs: Westmoreland 55-34 in 2011; Sandy Creek 54-13 in 2012; Herkimer 43-13 in 2013; Dolgeville 46-22 in 2014, Sandy Creek again 50-14 in 2015 and Dolgeville again, 46-16 in 2017 . This year’s result makes them 7-0 against Section 3 teams in the last eight years with a combined victory margin of 350-118! What really hurts is that their record in the semi-finals the next week is 1-6 and they’ve been out-scored 110-198. I guess section III fans should just realize that even if our heroes had beaten Tioga, they wouldn’t have gotten very past them. It’s a sad thing to realize after we’d won the state championship in this classification 6 times in 8 years from 1997-2004.

Moriah (7) beat Warrensburg (2) 34-16
https://www.timesunion.com/sports/a...ball-beaten-by-Moriah-in-Class-D-13381007.php
This game was not as close as the score seems: Moriah broke the game open in the second quarter and built up a 34-0 lead before coasting home.

Bye: Haldane (1)

Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Tioga (4) 54-19
https://www.pressconnects.com/story...d-into-one-outstanding-outfit-all/2017452002/
Should SU be looking at Cameron Barmore, Class of 2020? “But most noticeable football player and athlete on the field? Cameron Barmore, 6 feet and four inches worth of go-to wideout who, in the spring, was a 6-5 high jumper as a sophomore…. “I think Cameron Barmore showcased today why he’s the best athlete probably in our county and probably the best wide receiver in the state at this level,”

Moriah (7) beat Haldane (1) 6-0
https://www.pressrepublican.com/spo...cle_a4a08a82-eb78-11e8-a6d9-9336ff214159.html
Moriah pulled out an old-fashioned defensive duel with a foruth quarter drive and subsequent fumble recovery to clinch it.

Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Moriah (7) 26-6 for the championship
http://www.post-journal.com/sports/...reaches-into-bag-of-tricks-to-shift-momentum/
Clymer broke the game open in the fourth quarter on a trick play they called “trips, gun right; rip, hitch and pitch”. (They are still another “merger” team of three small towns. Clymer is the only one of them who has ever played a state playoff game so I combined Clymer’s record with this year’s result below.)

Sections 8 & 11 do not participate in the NYS playoffs. Sections 7 and 10 have so few schools that they have no schools in certain categories and have preliminary elimination games to get their schools into the playoffs. In some years in some categories, the entry is just listed as “7-10”, implying that the sections were considered together and the best school from either was issued an invitation.
Here are the won-loss records of each section in each classification in state playoff games, with the number of titles in parenthesis.

SECTION 1 Total: 168-100(27) Class D: 30-22(4) Class C: 42-18(8) Class B: 43-18(8) Class A: 32-22(5) Class AA: 21-20(3)

Comments: The best high school football in New York State, (north of New York City), has historically been played in Sections 1 ,2 and 5, (the Hudson River area and the Rochester Area) but Section 6 has been coming on strong in recent years. Amazingly, in 2014 the most historically successful section, Section 1, went 0-5 and the same thing happened to the second most successful section, Section 5, in 2017. Central New York has been slipping in recent years but managed state titles in Class a in 2015 and Class C in 2017. . The North Country just doesn’t have enough population to compete with the other sections and neither does Section 9, (basically the Adirondacks and the Catskills). The State Playoffs are set up on an East-West basis so Section 3 teams play Section 4 teams, against who they historically have been fairly well-matched, (but we were 4-16 in from 2013-2016), and then play the winner of Section 5 vs. Section 6, which is tougher. Sections 1 & 2 get Section 7, 9 or 10 in the first round which is kind of a walk-over. Then they typically face each other in the semis. The teams in the “West” would seem to have a harder road than the teams in the “East”. They’ve won 75 state titles at all levels vs. 42 for the eastern sections. One wonders if, should sections 8 & 11 and New York City stop “playing with themselves”, there might be a “North-South” look to the playoffs and Section 3 might do better.

It’s interesting to see how some sections do in each class. Assuming that success rate is directly related to the number of schools in each class, Section 4, (the Southern Tier) has little to offer at the level of the smallest and the biggest schools but is pretty strong in between. Section 3 for some reason, is the opposite, the second best in the state in Class D and better than you’d think in AA but mediocre in C and less than that in A and B. Section 7, (Lake Champlain) is pretty good in Class B but lousy elsewhere, indicating that most of their schools are at that level. Sections 5 and 6, (basically Western New York), are pretty good down the line, as are Sections 1 &2, from the capital district down the Hudson.

Here is a list of the most successful teams in the state, ranked by victories in the state tournament, regardless of class, (many of them have played in more than one class). They are listed in order of victories. If that’s a tie, the first tie-breaker is state titles, (including large or small school poll championships from 1969-92) and the second the number of losses. I’m listing all the teams with 10 or more state tournament victories.

The New York State Sportswriter’s Association has had rankings since 1969. They include sections * and 110. Originally they ranked all schools together. In 1970 they were divided, (as they should be) between “large” schools and “small” schools. In 1988 they went to Class A, B and “C-D”. Here are the teams, (with section numbers) that won in the polls for the years prior to the start of the state tournament in 1993, along with the highest ranked team in the sections that now play in the state tournament if the top team was from sections 8 or 11 and the top-rated Section III team when not #1:

The following teams have won state titles, (I am including poll champions from 1969-92- if a poll champion was from section 8 or 11, I treated the highest rated team from sections 1-7 and 9-10 as the “poll champion“- if there had been a tournament in those years, they‘d have been in it and winning the poll was the equivalent of winning the tournament in those days):

Section 10 (St. Lawrence area):
None

Section Three always starts out by playing Section 4 in the first round We are 18-4 against them in Class AA, 14-10 in Class A, 10-15 in Class B, (thank you, Chenango Forks, who beat our teams 8 times in a row and 14 overall), 9-15 in Class C and 10-15 in Class D, (Section coaches in Classes C and D voted not to send a team to the state playoffs in the first year, 1993). Over all Section 3 is 61-59 vs. Section 4.

If they survive Section 4, the Section 3 champs play the winner of the Section 5 and 6, (basically the Rochester and Buffalo areas) first round game. We’ve done well in Class D, 6-4 (3-2 vs. each), and held our own, 5-4, (3-3 vs. Section 5, 2-1 vs. Section 6), in Class C but been dominated in Class B, 2-8, (1-5 vs. Section 6, 1-3 vs. Section 5), Class A, 3-11, (3-6 vs. Section 5, 0-5 vs. Section 6) and Class AA, 4-14, (3-8 vs. Section 5, 1-6 vs. Section 6). Overall vs. Section 5 they are 13-21 vs. Section 5 and 7-19 vs. Section 6.
The following Section III teams have cleared the quarterfinal hurdle vs. Section 4 and survived the semifinal carnage vs. Sections 5 and 6 to play for the state championship:

1993 Class B Chittenango lost to Section 1 Yorktown 13-23
1996 Class A Whitesboro lost to Section 2 Troy 13-27
1996 Class AA Rome Free Academy lost to 1 Yonkers Roosevelt 14-27
1997 Class C CBA lost to Section1 Dover 26-32 (2OT)
1997 Class D West Canada beat Section 1 Bronxville 22-14
2000 Class A Fulton lost to Section 1 Nyack 20-34
2000 Class D Dolgeville beat Section 2 Fort Edward 55-3
2001 Class D Onondaga beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-7
2002 Class C Onondaga beat Section 1 Briarcliffe 35-6
2002 Class D Dolgeville lost to Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-38

2004 Class D Weedsport beat Section 1 Tuckahoe 22-11
2006 Class AA Auburn beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 27-26 (1OT)
2007 Class AA West Genesee beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 42-21
2007 Class C Bishop Ludden beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 21-16
2008 Class B Oneida lost to Section 1 Rye 12-16
2010 Class C General Brown lost to Section 1 Bronxville 14-34
2014 Class A Indian River beat Section 2 Queensberry 63-38
2015 Class B Cazenovia beat 2 Schuylerville 22-19
2017 Class C Skaneateles beat 2 Holy Trinity 28-25

Section 3 is 13-8 in state championship games. They lost their first four, then had an incredible 10-2 streak before winning 3 for the last 5. They are 6-7 vs. Section 1, 5-1 vs. Section 2 and 2-0 vs. Section 9. So if we can survive the semi-finals our chances of winning a state title are pretty good.

State (playoff) Champions from Section III (12):
1997- West Canada (Class D)
2000- Dolgeville (Class D)
2001- Onondaga (Class D)
