The State Playoffs: Class AA Rochester Aquinas (5) beat Lancaster (6) 39-7 Aquinas runs away from Lancaster in Class AA regional Aquinas, who has won more state titles than any other school, avenged a shut-out loss in last year’s state quarterfinals blowing by the Lancaster Legends, rushing for 356 yards. The Little Irish’s only loss was to Friendship Academy of Washington DC. Against New York State teams they were 10-0, 402-180. Cicero-North Syracuse (3) beat Elmira-Southside (4) 42-20 Cicero-North Syracuse defeats Elmira 42-20 in state quarterfinals The Northstars beat Elmira in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row but it wasn’t as easy as last year’s 57-14 game. This one was 20-20 at halftime before Jaiquawn McGriff took over. He ran 61, 65 and 77 yards for touchdowns, finishing with 238 yards on 16 carries and 4 touchdowns. New Rochelle (1) beat Newburgh Free Academy (9) 42-7 Football Game Recap: Newburgh Free Academy vs. New Rochelle - MaxPreps New Rochelle, another perennial state power, (4 titles) brushed past Newburgh after building up a 28-0 first half lead. Bye- Shaker (2) Rochester Aquinas (5) beat Cicero-North Syracuse (3) 28-21 Cicero-North Syracuse loses to Aquinas in Class AA state football semifinal For the second straight year my Northstars lost a heart-breaker in the state semi-finals. Last year the margin of defeat was a game-opening kick-off return and a game-ending pick six, losing 21-35 to Lancaster of Section 6. (Being unable to tackle Joe Andressen didn’t help, either.) This eyar, CNS scored first but then got steam-rolled by 28 straight Aquinas points. Then they put on a furious late rally to close to within 21-28. On the final play, a desperation pass went beyond the grasp of the last defender and into the hands of a Northstar receiver – who was falling down at the time and could not hold on. If he kept his feet he could have caught it and run into the end zone for the tying score. But it was not to be. New Rochelle (1) beat Shaker (2) 27-19 Shaker football falls short in state semifinal New Rochelle overcame a 13-19 halftime deficit behind 281 rushing yards and three scores from Jordan Forrest. Rochester Aquinas (5) beat New Rochelle (1) 21-14 for the championship Football: New Rochelle roars back, but mistakes prove costly in state final defeat Another New Rochelle comeback, this time from a 0-14 deficit, fell short. Forrest had 170 yards and two scores but had a third called back. The Little Irish held and then scored on a 90 yard run by Caron Robinson to win it. Robinson ran for 156 yards and two scores. The final lines for these teams: Rochester Aquinas 12-1 (478-249) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 2/758 States: 26-6 with 8 titles New Rochelle 11-2 (506-157) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 13/1242 States: 15-11 with 4 titles Cicero-North Syracuse 11-1 (471-135) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 11/1123 States: 2-2 with 0 titles Shaker 10-1 (434-155) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 22/2069 States: 0-2 with 0 titles Lancaster 9-2 (353-230) NYSSWA #17 MaxPreps 59/3748 States: 2-4 with 0 titles Newburgh Free Academy 9-2 (395-177) NYSSWA #19 MaxPreps 42/2979 States: 2-11 with 0 titles Elmira-Southside 9-2 (473-231) NYSSWA #20 MaxPreps 58/3728 States: 1-4 with 0 titles (The Max Preps listings are the state and national ranks among all schools) It’s interesting that the only two schools who had ever won a New York State title played for this title. Class A West Seneca East (6) beat Irondequoit (5) 15-8 Class A Far West Regional: No miracles this night for Irondequoit; West Seneca East ends Eagles run - Pickin' Splinters The Eagles used a strong defense to upset the undefeated Trojans, shutting them out for the last three quarters, even after a blocked field goal in the fourth. Indian River (3) beat Vestal (4) 48-7 Indian River rips Vestal to advance in state Class A football playoffs The Warriors steamrolled for 470 yards. Kwazsi Gaddis ran for 235 yards on 14 carries Guillermo Rosario-Acosta had 158 on 15 carries. “Coming into Friday's game, Gaddis had run for 1,994 this season and Rosario-Acosta had piled up 1,544. Gaddis is more of the slasher/speedster of the two while Rosario-Acosta combines an ability to pick up yards in traffic with strong, fast bursts.” Cornwall (9) beat John Jay (1) 35-14 Football: John Jay-Cross River runs out of gas in state-playoff loss to Cornwall A 78 yard fumble return turned a game that could have bene 14-14 into a 21-7 game and Cornwall never looked back. Bye- Burnt Hills-Balston Lake (2) West Seneca East (6) beat Indian River (3) 50-42 http://www.westsenecabee.com/articles/east-football-punches-ticket-to-state-final/ Indian River had no problem with West Seneca East’s defense, taking a 22-14 halftime lead and adding 20 points in the second half. But they gave up 50 points and their season ended. Shaun Dolac rushed for 236 yards and 5 scores for the winners. Cornwall (9) beat Burnt Hills-Balston Lake (2) 21-20 https://dailygazette.com/article/2018/11/16/burnt-hills-football-season-ends-in-tough-loss Cornwall batted down a two point conversion to hold on for the win. Amin Woods, who had 155 yards rushing and two TDs Cornwall (9) beat West Seneca East (6) 21-14 for the championship https://www.wgrz.com/article/sports/west-seneca-east-falls-shorts-in-title-game-21-14/71-617306875 I love the title of this article. Their shorts fell in the championship game. Cornwall scored two touchdowns in the final seven minutes to win the game. The Lines: Cornwall 12-0 (393-152) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 3/805 States: 10-13 with 1 title West Seneca East 11-2 (422-210) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 19/1611 States: 2-1 with 0 title Burnt Hills-Balston Lake 9-2 (422-160) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 16/1432 States: 11-8 with 1 title Indian River 11-1 (554-211) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 29/2365 States: 5-7 with 1 title Irondequoit 10-1 (306-158) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 32/2522 States: 1-2 with 0 titles John Jay 9-1 (269-42) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 39/2746 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Vestal 6-4 (222-202) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 188/7473 States: 4-3 with 3 titles (Titles include poll titles prior to the state tournament- see below) Class B Beekmantown (7) beat Potsdam (10) 15-0 in a preliminary game https://www.pressrepublican.com/sports/local_sports/moura-s-td-return-helps-b-town-down-potsdam/article_3873495c-8dbb-564d-9098-5b62f62288b5.html Christian Moura returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and the lead held up. “I just saw every white jersey on a blue jersey and took off from there and got an open lane,” Batavia (5) beat Cheektowaga (6) 56-28 https://13wham.com/sports/hs-sports-report/ray-leach-runs-into-the-record-book-as-batavia-advances-to-the-semis-56-28 The amazing Ray Leach scored 50 points, running for 417 yards and 8 TDs and also scoring a safety on defense to personally destroy Cheektowaga. Skaneateles (3) beat Chenango Forks (4) 27-26 http://dailyorange.com/2018/11/skaneateles-defeats-chenango-forks-27-26-last-play/ The Lakers scored on the final play to knock off the state’s #1 team and the school that has won the most playoff games over the years. Marlboro Central (9) beat Ardsley (1) 27-19 https://www.recordonline.com/varsity/20181110/marlboro-rallies-in-4q-to-beat-ardsley-in-state-quarterfinals The Dukes scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to erase a 6-13 deficit. Ameer Williams run=shed for 173 yards for the winners. Glens Falls (2) beat Beekmantown (7) 21-7 https://www.pressrepublican.com/sports/local_sports/glens-falls-staves-off-beekmantown-comeback/article_b3d05e51-93f7-5ed4-884b-6652d0829f38.html Joe Girard III passed for 278 yards and ran for 88 more. Batavia (5) beat Skaneateles (3) 54-49 https://fingerlakes1.com/2018/11/17/skaneateles-batavia-nys-football-semifinals-2018-nov-17/ it was an amazing battle between two of the top football players in the state. Pat Hackler threw for 255 yards and 3TDs and ran for 147 yards and three more scores for Skaneateles. But Ray Leach of Batavia scored 8 touchdowns for the second straight game, rushing for 474 yards on an incredible 50 carries. Leach said after the game that he was ”ready for bed”. Glens Falls (2) beat Marlboro Central (9) 48-28 https://capitalregionhssports.com/2018/11/18/state-football-semifinals-glens-falls-pulls-away-from-marlboro-while-shaker-and-burnt-hills-ballston-lake-lose-close-contests/ Girard passed for 300 yards and ran for another 28. He passed for two scores, one from 85 yards out and also returned a fumble for a score. Glens Falls (2) beat Batavia (5) 55-32 for the championship. https://capitalregionhssports.com/2018/11/25/glens-falls-football-claims-second-class-b-state-title-in-three-years/ Ray Leach was again fabulous with 410 yards rushing and 5 TDs but Glens Falls ran away with their second Class B title in three years, coming back from a 0-14 deficit to win going away 55-32. Joe Girard passed for 314 yards and two TDs and ran for two more. Aalijah Sampson ran for 135 yards and 4 scores. Leach, who had been stabbed in an August incident, ran for 1,645 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in the four game she played in the month of November – the section championship game and the three state playoff games. For the season he rushed for 3,031 yards and 48TYDs. Girard passed for 3,166 yards and 37 scores and ran for 399 yards and 13 more, thus accounting for 50TDs. The Lines: Glens Falls 11-2 (547-251) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 10/1118 States: 10-3 with 2 titles Batavia 12-1 (577-233) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 17/1528 States: 2-4 with 1 title Skaneateles 11-1 (551-196) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 18/1567 States: 4-2 with 1 title Marlboro Central 10-2 (405-141) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 30/2398 States: 4-7 with 0 titles Chenango Forks 10-1 (407-159) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 23/2095 States: 30-12 with 5 titles Ardsley 9-1 (339-103) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 36/2626 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Cheektowaga 9-2 (336-117) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 61/3886 States: 3-5 with 0 titles Beekmantown 8-2 (218-122) NYSSWA #28 MaxPreps 117/5855 States: 1-6 with 0 titles Potsdam 4-5 (134-127) NYSSWA UR MaxPreps 308/9802 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Class C Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) beat Saranac (7) 20-7 in a preliminary game https://www.pressrepublican.com/sports/late-pick-six-sinks-saranac-in-state-playoffs/article_ab62f808-df1d-11e8-8568-bb00d38d41a8.html A pick six and a blocked punt late in the game rescued victory from the jaws of defeat for Ogdensburg. Cleveland Hill (6) beat Warsaw-Letchworth (5) 54-6 https://pickinsplinters.com/2018/11/09/class-c-far-west-regional-cleveland-hill-runs-over-letsaw-54-6/ Cleveland Hill ran for 467 yards against a stacked box in this blow-out. Their blocking techniques must be pretty good. Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Holland Patent (3) 43-7 http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/5515166768529293209/holland-patent-vs-susquehanna-valley-class-c-state-regional-game/ Hey! H-P led 7-6 at one point! Billy Sheridan scored three times for the winners. H-P had 27 plays that gained nothing or went backwards. Dobbs Ferry (1) beat Chester (9) 35-14 https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/high-school/lohud-varsity-insider/2018/11/10/football-dobbs-ferry-offense-has-flawless-day-state-playoff-win/1893219002/ Awvise Khan had 20 carries for 154 yards to lead the Eagles, who made a goal line stand at the end of the first half to preserve a 12-7 lead and then drove down the field to open the third quarter for a score and two point conversion that gave them a 20-7 lead and control of the game. Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) beat Cambridge-Salem (2) 16-6 http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/sports/high-school-football-ofa-tops-cambridge-salem-to-reach-state-semifinals-in-class-c-20181110 Ogdensburg shocked the state’s #1 ranked team, which had been averaging 40 points a game by totally shutting them down until there were only 6 minutes left in the game. (Note: Cambridge, who won the state title in Class D in 2016 and 2017 joined nearby Salem High for a combined team due to declining enrollment. They had done this previously in 2014. Most of the players came from Cambridge as Salem didn’t even field a team in 2017 and in 2016 they’d gone 2-8 and lost to Cambridge 0-68. But the combined enrollment moved them up from Class D to Class C.) Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Cleveland Hill (6) 21-20 https://www.binghamtonhomepage.com/sports/local-sports/sabers-edge-out-eagles-21-20/1607907000 The Sabers took a 21-6 halftime lead but barely held on to win 21-20. Jarvon Thomas went 76 to the house on a third and 26 run to get the Eagles within one. But a fumble on fourth and two with two minutes to play was their last gasp. Dobbs Ferry (1) beat Ogdensburg Free Academy (10) 55-22 https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/high-school/lohud-varsity-insider/2018/11/17/football-dobbs-ferry-heading-back-dome-after-beating-ogdensburg/2013367002/ Dobbs Ferry slammed the door on Ogdensburg early, taking a 35-0 halftime lead. Ogdensburg was the bigger team so the Eagles went outside to run for 404 yards. Susquehanna Valley (4) beat Dobbs Ferry (1) 27-6 for the championship https://www.pressconnects.com/story/sports/high-school/2018/11/23/perfect-ending-svs-sabers-unbeaten-state-champions/2062125002/ Susquehanna Valley closed out a dominant season by beating Dobbs Ferry by three touchdowns for the title. Quarterback Jarred Freije scored three times and led the defensive charge from his linebacker positon. The Lines: Susquehanna Valley 12-0 (558-84) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 15/1360 States: 3-1 with 1 title Dobbs Ferry 8-3 (293-138) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 48/3290 States: 21-7 with 7 titles Cleveland Hill 10-2 (450-173) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 44/3044 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Ogdensburg Free Academy 10-2 (346-154) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 90/4819 States: 3-7 with 0 titles Cambridge-Salem 10-1 (481-147) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 98/5120 States: 21-13 with 3 titles (I included their record as “Cambridge” and “Cambridge-Salem” but not “Salem” – see above) Holland Patent 10-1 (370-154) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 74/4263 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Warsaw-Letchworth 9-2 (257-142) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 128/6152 States: 3-3 with 1 title (This is another merger between two schools. Warsaw never played in the state tournament on their own so I combined the Letchworth and Letchworth-Warsaw records) Chester 8-3 (364-174) NYSSWA #19 MaxPreps 174/7193 States: 6-10 with 0 titles Saranac 7-3 (408-187) NYSSWA #15 MaxPreps 276/8356 States: 5-9 with 0 titles Class D Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Alexander (5) 29-6 http://www.post-journal.com/sports/local-sports/2018/11/cant-be-stopped/ The shut-out was lost on an 86 yard pass play on the last play of the game. Derek Ecklund rushed for 154 yards on 25 carries for the winners. Tioga (4) beat Onondaga (3) 56-6 http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/5515165768523293221/onondaga-overwhelmed-in-35-0-loss-to-tioga-in-class-d-state-quarterfinal/ Coincidentally Onondaga’s only score in this game came on an 81 yard run In recent years Tioga has terrorized our champs: Westmoreland 55-34 in 2011; Sandy Creek 54-13 in 2012; Herkimer 43-13 in 2013; Dolgeville 46-22 in 2014, Sandy Creek again 50-14 in 2015 and Dolgeville again, 46-16 in 2017 . This year’s result makes them 7-0 against Section 3 teams in the last eight years with a combined victory margin of 350-118! What really hurts is that their record in the semi-finals the next week is 1-6 and they’ve been out-scored 110-198. I guess section III fans should just realize that even if our heroes had beaten Tioga, they wouldn’t have gotten very past them. It’s a sad thing to realize after we’d won the state championship in this classification 6 times in 8 years from 1997-2004. Moriah (7) beat Warrensburg (2) 34-16 https://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Warrensburg-football-beaten-by-Moriah-in-Class-D-13381007.php This game was not as close as the score seems: Moriah broke the game open in the second quarter and built up a 34-0 lead before coasting home. Bye: Haldane (1) Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Tioga (4) 54-19 https://www.pressconnects.com/story/sports/high-school/2018/11/16/stevens-tioga-smacked-into-one-outstanding-outfit-all/2017452002/ Should SU be looking at Cameron Barmore, Class of 2020? “But most noticeable football player and athlete on the field? Cameron Barmore, 6 feet and four inches worth of go-to wideout who, in the spring, was a 6-5 high jumper as a sophomore…. “I think Cameron Barmore showcased today why he’s the best athlete probably in our county and probably the best wide receiver in the state at this level,” Moriah (7) beat Haldane (1) 6-0 https://www.pressrepublican.com/sports/moriah-tops-haldane-punches-ticket-to-carrier-dome/article_a4a08a82-eb78-11e8-a6d9-9336ff214159.html Moriah pulled out an old-fashioned defensive duel with a foruth quarter drive and subsequent fumble recovery to clinch it. Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama (6) beat Moriah (7) 26-6 for the championship http://www.post-journal.com/sports/local-sports/2018/11/harper-reaches-into-bag-of-tricks-to-shift-momentum/ Clymer broke the game open in the fourth quarter on a trick play they called “trips, gun right; rip, hitch and pitch”. (They are still another “merger” team of three small towns. Clymer is the only one of them who has ever played a state playoff game so I combined Clymer’s record with this year’s result below.) The Lines: Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama 13-0 (511-171) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 34/2528 States: 8-4 with 1 title Moriah 9-3 (335-196) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 160/6986 States: 8-14 with 0 titles Haldane 7-2 (236-84) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 337/10284 States: 3-5 with 0 titles Tioga 9-3 (421-176) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 75/4289 States: 9-6 with 1 title Alexander 10-1 (421-95) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 147/6721 States: 0-2 with 0 titles Warrensburg 8-2 (354-129) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 280/9259 States: 1-2 with 0 titles Onondaga 7-3 (279-167) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 205/7921 States: 10-5 with 3 titles Maxpreps ranking of all New York State schools, (some of which do not participate in the state public schools playoffs described above): http://www.maxpreps.com/rankings/football/1/state/new-york.htm
