The holder

What will it take for Dino to lose faith in FG kicking? When will he realize we have an average kicker who has long ago regressed to the mean and a sloppy holder?

The statistics on going for it on 4th and 1 vs kicking a long field goal? Super easy to google; you're not even being serious at this point

Once again you miss my point. If we get stuffed like we did for the majority of the second half because we have no passing game, people would bitch about not kicking it. I am in no way defending Dino, just calling out fans who will bitch about either outcome.

I’m not sure why you’re getting any pushback. It’s accurate. I probably would be in that group too simply because the frustration of being soooo close.

Tucker. but that’s not the point. what I am saying is if he gets stuffed, which happened a lot in the second half, everyone would say “why didn’t we kick it”. Szmyt blew it. Period.
Then we say "why didn't we kick it."

The fact that a coaching decision can be second guessed is meaningless.

Dino was content to tie.

That's how you lose.

There aren’t ties in college football. You go to OT until someone wins.

We have a game thread where people were saying to go for it. Complaining about complaining that didn’t happen is so weird.

Not really, but you I respect your opinion

A couple of factors:

1. how was szymt kicking in practice ?

2. what are odds we do not make the fourth and one ? Their d line dominated our o line in the second half, so it was not a gimme. I figure odds were somewhere between 25 and 40% we don’t make the first down.

3. what are odds of a td if we make first down, I figure less than 10% with little time left and an erratic o. So kicking, was not playing to not win as others here allege. playing to tie was correct under the circumstances.

4. what are odds if we make first down that we move the ball 10 or more yards closer to make kick significantly easier ??

5. what are odds we get a penalty and actually move backwards ??

so, all in all, I circle back to number 1, and if szymt was making a decent percent in practice then kicking was the correct call, wo the timeout. And as mentioned in other threads, this miss was on the holder.

NO...you can't kick a FG on the laces from more than 30 yards.
That kick is going to move side to side...in this case right to left.
Also DISTANCE suffers...that ball hit on the endline in the endzone.
It may not have been good if it was dead down the middle.

Yeah. The laces stuff isn’t overblown. It’s PARAMOUNT to consistency with length and accuracy.

Kick itself was pretty straight down the R side and inside the upright.
But then it kept drifting to kickers L, and missed wide L.

Kicking the laces is like throwing a knuckleball - even the guy doing it isn’t really sure where it’s gonna go.

Our holder is turrible.
That’s the 2nd time in as many weeks he’s had the laces IN on a critical FG attempt.

It’s almost like we don’t have a ST coach?

Poor decision to kick, gutless, played to tie.
Conventional wisdom is to play for the tie at home and win on the road. This applies to 1 vs. 2 pt. conversions as well. One would think the home team has an advantage in OT.

No, you are missing MY point. I will explicitly spell it out: WHO CARES if people complain about a decision that puts our BEST player in a position to win?

That is a coach's job.

Didn't even notice the hold, I don't tend to see that stuff that well on TV. Has that been a consistent issue this year?

thats just not true.. can you point to any study on that? you could say its messes with a kickers head when he see the laces.

Nolan Cooney was the holder for the past 3 years.

This year it's a different guy. Makes you think.
Is this maybe the biggest issue with losing our special teams coach? Should we not be able to find a guy that can hold the ball correctly?

We have 1 back-up long snapper, and 2 back-up punters.

They better find someone.
