MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
First hour:
“Coach, what is your preference on the various suggests about what is to be done about the Carrier Dome and its roof?”
Second hour:
“Coach, you’ve said that you are afraid that if Bernie Sanders won the election, you’d wind up losing 80-90% of your income to the Federal Government and, if that happened, you’d rather quit and coach a high school team. If Bernie Sanders does get elected President, will you be retiring early?”
COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. They are now doing two hour shows. I will do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)
Coach summarized the season: “I begin thinking about the season in September so it’s been a long year. The defense has been pretty good. The offense has flipped a couple of times. It’s hard to win with a bad offense. In the tough games we made those shots. We made our first two (threes) against Pitt and then went 4 for 24….We lead the conference in three point shooting and are 3rd or 4th in steals. We’ve held most teams below what they usually score….We’ve been pretty consistent. We’ve won the games we should have won. There were good reasons when we lost. We’ve had some dead spots but so have the other teams. You hope their dead spots come when ours do. ”
Liam in Pompey again had a call to complain about- the one where Tyler Lydon was under the basket vs. Pitt and got stripped. JB: “It looked like he was fouled. There are always some bad calls. The refs didn’t decide that game and wins and losses are what we want.”
I called in my question about the Dome. “It’s a unique building, the biggest on campus facility in the country. I had to laugh. Someone said we were only averaging 21,000 per game. That’s better than 349 other schools. It’s second best but most people would be happy with second best. You could build a nice 16,000 seat arena and it would be what everybody else has. Pete Sala has kept the roof up there for many years.” (Thanks, Pete!) “A permanent roof costs so much. I’ve bene told they could put the roof up during the season, then deflate the other roof.” (???) “They could improve the locker rooms and the court area. There isn’t a bad seat for football.” What about a new facility off campus? “You can’t have it off campus. You wouldn’t capture the students. It would be too hard for them to get there….You can’t underestimate how valuable the Dome has been to the program.” (I think he meant “overestimate”.) “We’re very lucky to have it. We need to retain its uniqueness. Clifford Winters got it built and he said “You’re going to play there.” Every team had to play there to make it financially worthwhile. It would be very different to go with two buildings now. Building a new place from scratch will cost $300 million.”
Jim didn’t know why anyone would even asked DaJuan Coleman if he was coming back. “We knew this would be a difficult year. He’s shown signs of what he can do. His knees are holding up. He should be better next year….We’ll have Pascal and DaJuan, two big, physical guys. Tyler Lydon will go back to playing forward and Malachi will be playing guard. We’ll have more depth and people in their right positons.”
I thought one caller was praising DaJuan for his enthusiasm on the bench. JB: He’s been great. He’s done a great job. He’s a great teammate.” The caller said he is fast has great hands and could make a great tight end for the football team.” It was at that point that I thought they might not be talking about DaJuan. Coach said “I’m not sure he likes contact. He’s 6-7. He’s not a great player coming in but he’s helped us in practice.” I looked at the roster and they had to be talking about 6-6 235 sophomore Doyin Akintobi-Adeyeye.
Michael Gbinije is on the verge of being our “third 1,000 point transfer”, (the others are Leo Rautins and Ryan Blackwell).”You can’t ask Mike to do more than he’s done. He was not a good shooter or ball-handler when he came here. He’s is very good now. His defense has gotten better. He worked hard in the weight room. His stamina is great. The players doing the most for their teams in this league are Michael, Malcolm Brogden of Virginia, Anthony Barber of North Carolina State and (I didn’t get the name- I assume Zach Auguste or Demetrius Jackson) of Notre Dame.”
Trevor Cooney has “played tremendously. I don’t know what people expect. He’s a good player. He was not good on defense but has gotten a lot better. He’s had a lot of big games here. This year we got him more help but the defense still keys on him. It keeps the passing and driving games open. He’s not a great player. He’s a very good player. “ Matt said that he’s “on the cusp” of joining a club of players with 1,300 points, 200 assists and 200 steals that includes only Dale Shackelford, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens, Lawrence Moten, and Jason Hart. JB: “That’s a pretty good list. All those players played in the NBA.” (Shackleford was not.)
Later a caller asked about our the “intangible benefits” of having two 5th year seniors in the backcourt. JB: “The leadership you don’t see is huge. In the Bahamas we were facing two ranked teams and were down late. Both Michael and Trevor were saying not to worry- we got it. We play 7 guys and three of them are freshmen. Another, DaJuan Coleman is in his first year back after two years off. He’s like a first year player. These two guys have really made plays. You have to look at the key plays in the game. They’ve stuck 2-3 big threes and provided steady leadership. We were 0-4 in the conference and then got a win but had to play Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia on the road. We won 2 of three and then beat four pretty good teams at home. We’re spoiled here. I’m spoiled. I want more. It’s been a very traumatic year, full of issues. We lost a guy who could have helped us inside just as the season was about to begin. We’ve won more close ones than we’ve lost. Mike and Trevor are averaging 30 points per game and are leading the league in steals.”
“Mike and Trevor have won a lot of games in their career giving maximum effort. I don’t get upset over a missed shot. I can’t get upset with players who are giving their all… Trevor’s Mom and Dad have come to every game their son has played. They are tremendous parents…Trevor is not Gerry McNamara, although he’s better on defense than Gerry was. He’s done some great things and won a lot of games. “
On the two teams we will play before the next show, North Carolina State and North Carolina, who just played each other: “Two really good teams. North Carolina still has a chance to be one of the best teams in the country. They have a tremendous front line, great depth, great talent. Bryce Johnson leads the league in double-doubles. He’s the best big guy in the country. They didn’t shoot well and still won by 12 on the road. That’s when you are really good….Anthony Barber can drive on 2-3 guys, can make pull-ups and is getting better at long range shots. He’s the best point guard in the league. State beat Pitt by 16 at Pitt- nobody does that. They’ve lost a lot of close games.” Duke, Virginia and UNC beat them by double figures- their other 8 league losses have been by single digits.
Both Pat and Drew from Clay suggested that the team might have some extra motivation from the way the fans treated them in Raleigh last year. JB: “Fans are going to be fans. I just ignore it. Duke fans can be hard on you but they applauded when I faked taking off my jacket.” He talked about one game from a couple of years ago where one lady seated behind the SU bench “would stand and scream two feet from me during the time outs. It was the loudest high-pitched scream I’ve ever heard in my life. Fortunately we were way ahead so I didn’t have to talk much. Once, when we played at St. Bonaventure, four students sat with their knees in my back and were screaming until I turned around and talked to them. It was absolutely not funny.” Now we know why JB won’t play the Bonnies in their place.
Pat also wanted to know if NC State defends the pick and roll the way Pitt did. JB: “They’ll change it up but they’ll play it tough. They rely on offense. They are a very good offensive team.“ Then Pat asked asked about recruiting. JB: “We used to recruit nationally but it’s more productive to recruit the northeast. There are 40 Division 1 players in New England. We recruit DC, Philly and New York. There’s enough players there to support the program. “
Dave wanted to know about “one of your player you haven’t talked about lately- Tyler Roberson”. That got a laugh. Dave wanted to know if he makes that 12 footer in practice. JB: “He can’t make that shot yet. He can drive. The big problem is that he’s got to go to the offensive boards. When we screen his defender is helping. He’s got to play harder. I wish he could make that shot. It would make us a way better team. He was working with Coach Hopkins for about a half hour today. You can’t score a lot if you can’t make a 15 foot shot. He hits about 20% of them. …I should have said that we can’t win with one player getting 1 point and 4 rebounds. He knew what I was trying to do. He’s a 21 year old man, not an 18 year old child. His AAU coach knew what I was trying to do. Some people are…sensitive. It’s never personal. I’m trying to get players to play as well as they can for the team and for them- they want careers in basketball.”
“I do yell at Trevor Cooney for taking a bad shot…but never for missing. There’s never a problem with effort from him. He’s made threes when we’ve won. We really struggle to score inside. The value of Trevor is that he allows Mike and Mal to drive to the basket. Trevor is second in the league in three point shots.”
“Tyler absolutely thinks he’s playing hard. When he isn’t we have to show him the proof on film. If he doesn’t run down the court or doesn’t go after loose balls, it’s on the film. I used to battle with Rony Seikaly all the time about giving maximum effort. The player gets mad at the coach because he thinks he is giving maximum effort. Some players you have to push hard, some you don’t. Some can take it, some can’t. The 1975 and 1996 teams came back and told me asked me why I want’ being as tough on the current team as I was on them. it is true that you’re not as tough anymore. But you can’t say “Please”. A teacher can say please to a student and ask them to do things. The teacher isn’t going to be fired if the student flunks. But I won’t be’ teaching’ any more if we don’t win. You aren’t allowed to fail.”
Darryl in Clay expressed admiration for GMAC and Trevor and asked if JB has “another sniper after Trevor?” JB: Not another Irish guy. Those were the only two who could shoot in the last 20 years. “
I called in my second question. “If Bernie does get in, it will take a couple of years to get his legislation through and the Republicans would stop him. Socialism is not a good option. Bernie’s a nice guy with a nice message. Who wouldn’t support a guy who wants to take money from the rich and give it to them?” As long as we don’t lose you, coach. “I’ll still be here.”
Next week will be their last show of the season.
